sassenach Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 (edited) Did you guys know that there's a comet visible for the next few nights?!! I did not until last night when dd came in from hanging out with neighborhood friends and announced she had seen a comet. I said, do you mean a shooting star? And she was like, NO, MOM, A COMET! Sure enough, she was right. I'm so excited to see it tonight. Edited July 14, 2020 by sassenach 1 Quote
Mbelle Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 Yes, I keep trying to see it, but apparently I'm not finishing netflix binging in time. So tonight it's my top priority! Quote
PrincessMommy Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 I tried to see it last night but too much cloud cover. Is there a great place to check times for best viewing and where to look in the sky. I heard a brief thing on our local radio yesterday that said just after 10PM last night in the NW (or NE) sky and then again just before sunrise 😜 Quote
EmseB Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 Yes, the kids and DH went out and saw it on Saturday morning and then went out on Sunday again and brought the telescope. They got excellent views of Saturn and Jupiter too! I slept in with the baby both times. Quote
Carol in Cal. Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 I looked for it last night, but I think there were trees in the way. Will do a little more driving to a better spot tonight! Quote

I might try to go elsewhere to see it. This was my problem too. I'm going to have to go walk up the hill down the street that the water tower is on. I live right on the eastern continental divide. Well the RR right in front of my house is right on it, so then all the property slopes gently down and there are too many tall pine trees in the NW direction to see even though I stood on the RR, which is the highest area, I could not see. Ali in OR Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 (edited) Dh's photo from Monday night I think. 10:30pm, northwest section of the sky, hard to see with naked eye, and this is an 8 second exposure. Actually I have to see if I can get the file smaller--will post later if I can. Edited July 15, 2020 by Ali in OR Quote

Same here. We'll have to get in the car and drive if we want to see it... Or maybe wake up at 5 a.m. (?), which is definitely not happening. 🙃 Quote
gardenmom5 Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 (edited) We saw it the other night - it's very cool. We took our 15X binoculars (on a tripod - those things are heavy!). Next time - we'll take our telescope too. eta: now it's visible after dusk instead of before dawn. Around the lynx constellation. So - near where the sun geos down. It is rising so it will be higher each night. It was at 10 degrees above the horizon, but will be climbing. Edited July 15, 2020 by gardenmom5 Quote
theelfqueen Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 Its not high enough over the horizon to see it in the evenings from my house (darn mountains) so we are planning a trip out at 3 AM to see it from a flatter place where we can see it on the NE horizon instead of the NW) ... Use this to figure out times and angles for your location. http://neowise.whatsupin.space Quote
Beth S Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 Link to tips for viewing it = https://earthsky.org/space/how-to-see-comet-c2020-f3-neowise Binocs are highly recommended. It's near the Big Dipper. 1 Quote
sassenach Posted July 15, 2020 Author Posted July 15, 2020 We saw it last night but it was faint and we were battling some light pollution from the city over the hill. We're going to try to drive out to the coast tonight or tomorrow to get a better look. 1 Quote
