Dmmetler
As usual, I find myself looking for longer shorts/capris appropriate for a summer program for DD. She is long legged and long waisted, and due to working out a lot for cheer this season, has muscular legs, but a small waist. Depending on style, she wears anything from a 0 to a 4, at 5’ 4”. This year, she’s going to be spending 3 weeks in July/August in a high-desert ecosystem, so things that are lightweight, but provide more sun protection are good, and the campus is big enough that just getting from place to place will require a decent amount of time outside. Last year, she did school-uniform type shorts and found them a bit hot even in San Diego, so I’m thinking we may need something lighter/more flowing, but she would prefer to not wear skirts, especially not longer ones (which is my choice for hot weather climates). Fabrics with a built in SPF are good.
TrixieB
Ultimate shorts? One of my kids has a pair of the Hydro shorts, and they are long, lightweight, and flowing. ETA: they are athletic/athleisure though - not sure if your dd is looking for something dressier. Edited April 28, 2019 by TrixieB
MEmama
Have you tried Athleta or Athleta Girl?
mmasc
I love these! They check all of your boxes except maybe being *too* long for what your DD wants. Smallest size is 2. https://www.columbia.com/womens-saturday-trail-ii-knee-pant-AL8672.html ETA: these are my second favorite, for when I want actual shorts above the knee. https://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/magellan-outdoors™-womens-fish-gear-falcon-lake-bermuda-short#repChildCatSku=109178401 Edited April 28, 2019 by mmasc
almondbutterandjelly
I'm in south Texas, and I find that 100% cotton, woven fabric is best. Knit gets hot. Nylon gets hot. I wear the "sunwashed canvas" cropped pants from LL Bean. They also have a shorts version. https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/53604?page=original-sunwashed-canvas-pants-cropped&bc=12-27-622&feat=622-GN1&csp=f https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/31068?page=sunwashed-canvas-shorts%26csp=a%26feat=53604-item_page.recsmiddle
alisoncooks
I'm obsessed with Columbia's Anytime Line. The "Long Shorts" might be what you want: https://www.columbia.com/womens-anytime-outdoor-long-short-AL4591.html I also have the Anytime Capri. They're very lightweight and water resistant/quick dry. Super stretchy (I am size 18 but the Anytime size 16 still fits because they're flexible.) I first bought them for a Disney trip and they were great. They're pricey but sometimes Amazon has deals, and sometimes I can find a pair on eBay.
Jaz
I'm not sure these are light enough but they are nice shorts with some structure. They shrink down about a size when washing so she could probably wear the 2: https://www.jcpenney.com/p/ana-9-chino-bermuda-short/ppr5007858291?pTmplType=regular&catId=SearchResults&searchTerm=ana+womens+shorts&productGridView=medium&urlState=brand%3Da.n.a%26gender%3Dwomen&badge=onlyatjcp https://www.jcpenney.com/p/ana-7-chino-short/ppr5007858284?pTmplType=regular&catId=SearchResults&searchTerm=ana+womens+shorts&productGridView=medium&urlState=brand%3Da.n.a%26gender%3Dwomen&badge=onlyatjcp
Hoggirl
I like the Kuhl brand. You can get them at Title Nine. They come in several different lengths. I am NOT long-legged, but I am long-waisted. They also (I think) tend to run a bit small. I usually wear a size 2 on the bottom half, but I wear a size 4 in this brand. They also have capris. Here is a link to all of Title Nine’s shorts. You’ll find some of the Kuhl brand among them. https://www.titlenine.com/category/clothing-and-gear/womens-shorts.do
Pen
These or similar for cooling: https://www.duluthtrading.com/womens-armachillo-cooling-pants-56818.html or Columbia for less cooling, but good spf and less expensive
Forget-Me-Not
I’ve seen pants and skorts in the quick-dry fabric for women at Costco. Both Kirkland brand and Eddie Bauer brand. Edited April 28, 2019 by Forget-Me-Not
alisoncooks
I listed the Columbia shorts above, but I wanted to say that I've seen a similar style shorts at Academy Sports, their generic brand.
moonflower
DD13, similar body type and clothing needs (i.e. shorts that do not look like denim underwear), likes these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GKSPF3W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 "ultra soft cotton fabric" is a bit optimistic; it's not ultra soft but it's soft enough.
