oliveview
I am looking for some good chapter books about the reading level of The Boxcar Children? Any suggestions? Laurie4b
Nate the Great is somewhat below that level and Encylcopedia Brown is slightly above. The Billy and Blaze books are good--not quite chapter books, but long stories.
bethben
A-Z mysteries are good. There are 26 + of them. Magic Tree house books. Beth
nukeswife
Another set my son has loved and is really into now is The Magic School Bus chapter books. He loves them and usually learns something science related along the way. We are also getting into the A-Z mysteries, and the same authors newer Capital Mysteries. We love Magic Tree House as well. In the Rain
In addition to the titles above, my dd enjoyed these books that I think would appeal to boys Henry Huggins series The Littles The author of A to Z Mysteries has several series
abbeyej
These are all series, so if he finds one he likes, you'll have a few more books to "feed" him... Flat Stanley (whimsical, sweet, old-fashioned) Little Eddie (Haywood -- sweetly old-fashioned -- realistic) Secrets of Droon (contemporary kids go to a fantastical world and battle monsters, etc) Dragon Slayers' Academy (humorous take on medieval myth) Time Warp Trio (boys travel to other times -- slightly snarky humor) Encyclopedia Brown (kid detetective) Sideways Stories from Wayside School (wackiness!) Tree House Academy
My son is reluctant reader too. He has recently gotten into the Judy Moody books (hey, whatever works, right? LOL) and Horrible Harry. He also likes the Illustrated classics like Robinson Crusoe, Island of the Blue Dolphins, etc.
Mandamom
My son is reluctant reader too. He has recently gotten into the Judy Moody books (hey, whatever works, right? LOL) . My dd8 who is a reluctant reader prefers the Stink books, which is Judy Moody's brother. She's not interested in reading about Judy. Oh well. I'm at the point where I am just thrilled that he is reading! It has taken so much just to get us to this point. Thanks again!:D
Kay in Cal
My ds finally got into reading chapter books with Dragon Slayers Academy--a recommendation from the old board.
Laura Corin
You'd have to see them, because they range in reading level. There are a couple of Roald Dahl books that might be suitable - our favourite is The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me. Laura
mazakaal
My boys loved Enid Blyton books at around 6-9yo, particularly the Famous Five series and the Mystery of series. Also, have you tried the Hardy Boys books, the older ones, not the new series?
KAM
Mine (5) loves A to Z mysteries, Secrets of Droon, Secrets of Dripping Fang (the covers can be a bit gruesome, Little Wolf (and the sequels), Berenstain Bears chapter books, and the ZAK files. stripe
Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder books by Gary Paulsen Shiloh by Phyllis Naylor Whipping Boy by Sid Fleishman Some boys are into those "scary stories" types of books too, which are not chapter books, and not everyone is crazy about them.... and I have to say that a lot of boys would rather be reading non-fiction, so perhaps a book about something that interests him (historical event, science thing, sports, biography, animals, bugs, cars, "how to" books ....).
