1GirlTwinBoys
Cottage cheese in unopened container that says Sell By 11/8/16 I'm using it in a recipe that will be cooked. Edited November 20, 2016 by 1GirlTwinBoys
SparklyUnicorn
I'd smell it and taste it. If it smelled/tasted fine I'd use it.
Kassia
I wouldn't, but I'm super careful about food. http://www.eatbydate.com/dairy/cheese/cottage-cheese-shelf-life-expiration-date/
VaKim
It hasn't been opened and is going to be cooked? Heck yeah, I'd use it. If it doesn't have anything growing on it, go for it. Shoot, there are some recipes that purposely use sour milk. How could this be worse?
justasque
I would open it, look for mold, smell it, and then carefully taste it. If it passed those tests, I would use it, and eat the resulting meal promptly. Dairy products are often fine after their use-by dates. You have a sell-by (not "use by") date of twelve days ago. Definitely in the "check first" range but not in the "no way is this going to still be good" range. hornblower
No way. you're almost 2 weeks past the sell by date. Edited November 21, 2016 by hornblower
Rachel
If it had a seal, I'd smell it. If it smells ok, I'd use it. I do that all the time with yogurt and haven't had a problem. I've gone a week past the sell by date with cottage cheese without problem. You will be at 2 weeks tomorrow.
Tanaqui
According to google, unopened cottage cheese lasts for about 7 - 10 days past the sell by date if kept in the fridge. If you grabbed this from the freezer, that's different. (A couple of other sites, including Daisy, which ought to know, are asserting that it's good for up until two weeks past the sell by date. All sites agree that if the cottage cheese is watery or sour, or otherwise smells/tastes/looks "off", then it's bad.) Cooking spoiled food will hopefully kill the bacteria, but it cannot destroy their harmful byproducts. If you are in any doubt, throw it out. regentrude
If it was unopened, absolutely. If opened, I would still use it if not moldy or smells off. You notice if dairy is spoiled.
