Sure, I'd probably skip some of the less than interesting stuff and not expect to finish the entire book.  Have you asked him how he'd like to do Lit this year?

I have used literature texts in the past and will use one next year.  Whether I'd use the one that you have would depend on whether I liked the selections and the format.

 

I used the Prentice Hall American literature textbook last year but only as an anthology of short stories and poems.  

 

I will be using the 10th grade McDougal Littell literature text next year.  We will be reading short stories from the first four units and my son will be answering most of the questions pertaining to the stories in writing.

 

I did/will not use either text as a stand alone literature course.

We've used the McDougal Littel "The Language of Literature" from 7th to 12th grades. We do read almost every story and do we discuss the main literary element in each selection. Sometimes we discuss the questions. Occasionally, I will assign some type of written assignment.  We do NOT do everything, especially the standardized test prep pages and writing instruction pages.  We also read full novels during the year.

 

Nothing wrong with using a textbook... just use it as a tool to meet YOUR goals! :)

You could use some complete books and part of the textbook. I used parts of textbooks for lit a couple of years.

Sure.

 

They generally have lots of complete plays, short stories, and poems - you could go through quite a bit of the book without using a single excerpt. Do more "work" with the text selections and and less with any novels.

"I" don't like textbook literature, so I don't use the literature textbooks I've been gifted. Sometimes, they make a nice resource for me.

 

If you like the textbook, I see no reason why you shouldn't use it.

Busy and overwhelming would probably end up in my reject pile as well.  In fact, our Prentice Hall book almost ended up there because of those very reasons.

This particular book weighs in at a whopping 10 pounds!!! So, not only busy, but ridiculously heavy!

No. I would not use it. I like to use complete books and did not like the literature selections and the inane questions/projects in the textbooks I have seen.

We use Elements of Literature by Holt.  We don't do everything in the book and we add whole books too.

I used to kind of poo on stuff like this, but I find myself gravitating more and more towards these things because they do save me time and sanity. 

 

So yes, I would likely use it.

I picked up an American lit textbook at Goodwill and use it as an anthology. It's nice to have the biographical info and the questions at the end of each story or poem are pretty good.
