OhanaBee
They pronounced it that way because it's the name of the town and always has been since its founding. The woman who suggested the name knew the correct pronunciation but deliberately Americanized it so the bue- would match the first syllable in beautiful. Is that it?? I pronounce it that way now....but it's still hard since the streets [and film company] I grew up with uses the Spanish pronunciation. And here in Virginia it's back to the Spanish "Buena" instead of "Buuna". Of course there's also the difference between Houston, TX and Houston Street in NYC. Lesson being - ALWAYS let the natives tell you how to pronounce their place names!!
Dory
Definitely neesh. Do the nitch people also say kitch or keech for quiche? Genuinely curious. I've always said keesh. That's the only way I've ever heard it. Oh, and while we're at it, we could discuss "clique." "click" or "cleek"? I vary with that one depending on who I'm around when I say it. Cleek would be correct but it's pretty uncommon to hear it pronounced that way anymore.
Kathryn
Neesh. I pronounce foyer the French way also, but I generally avoid using that word now because people never know what I'm talking about. I just say "front hall" now.
HRAAB
So interesting. I've lived in the same area my entire life; it's always pronounced 'nich'. In fact I have never heard 'neesh'. I might try using it to see people's reactions.
Crimson Wife
The French origin word that typically gets me strange looks is "milieu". I say mill-yuh, but apparently most people say mill-you.
foxbridgeacademy
Depends on who I'm talking to. If I think they know the word then it's neesh, if not I'll add in "you know... neesh or nitch". Where I'm from it's always pronounced nitch but I know better.
In The Great White North
I've only heard nitch. And say keesh for quiche. And foy-er. I've never heard narthex refer to anything besides a church. And click, for clique. How is Houston Street pronounced in NYC?
QueenCat
Oh, and while we're at it, we could discuss "clique." "click" or "cleek"? Click. I have never, ever heard anyone call a clique a cleek.
caitlinsmom
I pronounce it nich, but when I read it is sounds like neesh in my head. No idea why. Me too. :)
Guest jason21
I pronounce it as nich but neesh sounds good as well..lol
Little Nyssa
I don't agree with any of you! :) I say NEECH and always have, and that is what people around me have always said, as far as I've ever noticed.... just in the past couple of years I have started to hear people say Neesh and it seems Frenchified and artificial to me. BTW I am from New England if that makes a difference, but I live on the West Coast now.
Liz CA
Definitely neesh. Do the nitch people also say kitch or keech for quiche? Genuinely curious. No quiche is "keesh." Sorta rhymes with sheesh....
Liz CA
People, it all depends it you pronounce it in French or English...therefore neesh is correct as is nitch if you insist on the American/English way.
