MomtoCandJ
I want to get dd some reference books but our budget right now is really tight so I can't spend much, where would you go to get some? I'm going to look at our local thrift store but not going to get high hopes (not many homeschoolers around here and the few books they might have will most likely be really old, like 1960s old)
klmama
I've seen quite a few at library sales. It might be worth checking around to find out if there are sales coming soon in your area. Search under "library sale" or "book sale" and your state's name, and see what you find.
Lara in Colo
our library has a bookstore in it and I can almost always find something. what are ages and subjects you are needing? Perhaps we can help--- some of us (like me) are trying to downsize and selling our stuff doesn't seem worthwhile, but giving it seems doable. MomtoCandJ
Dd is 4 soon to be 5, a general history (right now focus is on US history) and general science (plants, animals, earth science and space mainly) is what I'm looking for. Doesn't need to be fancy but would like them to be younger then me LoL.
HejKatt
Freecycle and craigslist for your closest cities might also work, if you are close enough to cities which have those. But my first thought was the library sales too - I suggest some volumes of Childcraft for the science. http://www.booksalefinder.com/ For history, could public domain downloads work ? http://www.homeschoollibrary.info/900-history-geography/ http://www.oldfashionededucation.com/worldhistory.htm Paperbackswap is also an option - if you don't have books, you can buy a credit. The current cost/credit is $3.95. It works best for books you wouldn't be able to purchase for less than $2 (e.g. it's not really worth it for thin readers that you can easily find for 50 cents to $1). For thin readers, I would look on eBay for bulk lots.

Um_2_4
Where do you all buy maps? My aunt wants to buy dd a world map for her room. Aunt is giving me $20.00 for this. We have this one and they like it because you can use dry erase markers on it and it sticks to the wall well. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00408AAB2/ref=oh_details_o02_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=
TechWife
I agree with the others on library sales - ours does an annual sale. Also, try Abe Books - they mainly have textbooks, but they often have other things as well - the older volumes can be had for as little as $1.00. Susan in TN
A big used bookstore in our area had a big (not sure if complete) set sitting outside in their "free book" area. I think they don't sell well because of internet usage, so you might find a decent set.
vickjul
http://www.wegivebooks.org/ has quite a few DK Eye Wonder books available in Adobe Flash format. Registration is free. My newly-5-year-old would happily spend hours browsing through these.

jhschool
Abe Books, like TechWife said. They have great deals.
LaCEmom
I've bought several on Amazon for a penny plus $3.99 shipping. The tricky part is finding the good titles.
