Picture Books for Artists / Composers?

Recommended Posts

I am looking to make a list of picture books about artists / composers to work through as we head to the library. Or even books on music/art in genera. I've no idea where to start since this is a relatively new topic for us to explore. A variety of elementary ages is what I am looking for. Any ideas are greatly appreciated :)

We've enjoyed the work of the authors the pp listed. In particular, we've enjoyed:

Vivaldi and the Invisible Orchestra by Stephen Costanza

Vincent's Colors by Vincent van Gogh

Michael the Angel by Laura Fischetto

The Julie Merberg and Suzanne Bober board books (In the Garden with van Gogh, Painting with Picasso, Sharing with Renoir, etc.)

Ann Rachlin wrote a series called Famous Children about the following composers:

Mozart

Tchaikovsky

Bach

Beethoven

Brahms

Chopin

Schubert

Handel

Schumann

Hayden

These may be out of print, but your library may have copies of them.

Take them to a performance of Peter and the Wolf - most orchestras do this once a year. It's usually either part of a children's orchestra series or their education series, so doesn't usually show up on the regular schedule. Check with the symphony orchestra's office. This is a great selection for them to learn about the instruments in the orchestra and what they sound like. The conductor usually does a lot of teaching with this performance.
