blondeviolin
Emmett's birthday is tomorrow. For gifts we do something to wear, something to play, something to read. We've got the others covered, but not the book. It doesn't have to be educational or even something he can read on his own. He likes the occasional fiction book, but he really loves encyclopedia type books. Any ideas?

theYoungerMrsWarde
I just asked ds5.5 what his favorite book was and he told me the Magic Tree House books.

momtoamiracle
at five my son really loved Beatrix Potter. Especially The Tale of Mr Todd and Squirrel Nutkin. He also loved any books on planets, sea animals, and bugs.
courtney.byrum
At 5 my DS found Franny K Stein (followed by Captain Underpants!) so I don't think I'm any help. He loved (and will still read) any of the books in the Lets Read and Find out Science series so those might be fun for him too.
applethyme
Anything with words  I see my son most often with Clifford, I Spy or the Llama, Llama books.

kokotg
Does he have a nice animal encyclopedia type book already? My now almost 7 year old wore his out starting when he was 5ish.
blondeviolin
I'd really like to steer clear of a read aloud as he detests being read to. Any suggestions? :bigear:
momtokea
At that age my son really like the My Father's Dragon series. We had the books, but we also had the audiobooks, too. He listened to them over and over again.
myfatherslily
My son loves Ricky Ricotta. :)
ScoutTN
My 5 yo is not reading yet. He loves books with detailed pictures like Richard Scarry and Peter Spier. Peter Spier's Noah's Ark and People are favorites. He also like books about animals. We have one Usborne book about Big animals that has several large fold-outs and he pores over it. He also loves anything with knights or Star Wars. Lately some of his favorite stories are: Billy and Blaze, Train Song (a poem), Leaf Man and Rickki-Tikki-Tavi. A pp mentioned the Beatrix Potter stories. My kids love, love, love these and the small boxed set is fabulous - just right for little hands. iwantsprinkles
I know the David books (No, David, etc) are pretty popular and easy to read with little kids. We haven't read any of them, but all the teachers here rave about them

ThisIsTheDay
Capyboppy by Bill Peet. Not the usual Peet rhyming story, it's a story about the pet capybara his family had when he was a boy.
