Going to ikea tomorrow, need advice (homeschool room shopping)

Recommended Posts

Okay, we are going, and we ARE going to stay in budget! :tongue_smilie:

I have a wonderful Ikea Galant

galant-desk__20944_PE105995_S4.jpg

that i found on craigslist last week for $80. I was also going to buy individual Vika Amon tables too, as they are only 20 and get good reviews. But dh thinks that one large table should be enough, and will save wall space for shelves, whiteboard, maps etc. up til now we have been using the dining room table, so we are used to using one big table...overkill to get individual desks too? The room is about 280 sq feet, with the longest wall measuring about 16 feet and the other wall measuring 13 feet. Two other walls are unusable (washing machine and such n one, garage door with windows on the other. So actual wall space is at a premium. I already own two expedidts and one ikea computer desk, as well as a small loveseat, all of which are meant to fit.....

So i am considering getting just one Billy, or one more Expedit (i need more shelf space!) and four chairs for the big table. Debati g between Snille http://www.ikea.com/us/en/images/products/snille-visitor-chair__34930_PE125257_S4.jpgthat are NOT on rollers (could be a plus in terms of stability) or Alrik swivel.http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S19848319/ LOVE the Jules chairs http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S19848319/but they are a bit pricey........

I need advice! Does anyone own any of these chairs? Sturdy or not? Any other advice?

You could always get the very small Vika Amon. Might be nice to have somewhere else to park stuff. The small ones are only 5.99, and 3.50 per leg for the white rounded ones. I'm a professional IKEA shopper :D

I don't even need to go into the warehouse anymore, I just go into the pick up place (where's the bag over head smiley)

Forget about the Jules. Let me tell you how *awesome* it is to hear the clank clank....clank clank because they twist them and the sides smack into the desk. OVer, and over.....and over:lol:

Wait, are you sure youre talking about the NON swivel Jules:http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S19848319/

I have to agree with the Jules, at least the swivel. I love the look, but the banging against the desk...every day, makes me cringe. I should have chosen a stationary chair. We don't have an IKEA in Alaska (I bought a fake Jules chair), so I don't have any other advice.

Is getting the desk that attaches to the Expedit a choice? I have that, and while it limits somewhat the access to the cubbies directly under it, I CAN get at them, and just use them for less popular items.

I think it would jut into the room too much......

Yes, this is why i am leaning towards the non swivel chairs...thanks!

Oh? You have an 8 yo boy also?:tongue_smilie:

ETA: just checked your signature line. I KNEW it! If it is any comfort, 12 and 14 yo girls do not do this.

Separate tables so each kid can have their own desk can be a big motivator. It was here anyway.

Take only as much money as needed for your planned purchases and the Swedish meatballs everyone has to sample...:001_smile:...you know what happens if you don't. ;)

LOL! DD does not do this. DS smacks his, with his fingers and pencils like a drumming beat. I actually sewed him a chair back cover and lined it with batting.

Halcyon - I would sit in that first one in black you linked, it's like a bucket and you sit "in" it more, where as the Jules you sit flat. I don't know if that would make a difference to you or not. I can just see mine sitting on the tippy edge without good posture since it is not flat. It probably depends on the kids size though. The other little one is again, the swivel thing. The reason I got the Jules is because they are height adjustable. I guess you just can't have it all!

We found the Jules chairs uncomfortable. We went with the Snille. It fit our kids better.

I have cushions on ours. But yeah, without them they are kind of hard.

Do you notice your kids "sink" into the Snille? I felt like mine would when I sat in them. Maybe not DS, but DD is little

I just bought two new IKEA tables this week and am separating my two younger kids. I bought VIKA corner table and the $19.99 size Amon. I splurged and bought the adjustable legs for my the latter table so it would work better for my 11yo daughter. She is used to a much lower table. The adjustable legs are $15 each, but it was worth it to me. I already bought swivel chairs at Office Max a couple of weeks ago with a back-to-school special. I may be regretting that one!

They do kinda sink, but my little two generally sit on thier knees yet. My oldest really doesn't sit at all. He has always stood to do his work at the table. I'm not sure why we bought a chair for him at all.:001_huh:

We sat and tried several chairs trying and retrying to make sure we got the right one. I had originally picked the Jules chairs, but once the kids and dh sat in it, they adamently voted no. Too hard. I even suggested cushions, but nope. The Snille won out.

I have 1 of these http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S19917874/ with 4 of these chairs for the kids to do schoolwork http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/68156009/

Also have this http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S39903692/ which I use as my desk/ computer desk. Also in the room, 2 Billy bookcases and the 8 square Expedit. Also have 4 of these http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80098516/ which stack up very nicely and hold a TON of odds and ends! Have fun! As soon as I get a few buck, I am back to Ikea

I tried to buy Ikea tables but dh was sure they'd be wobbly. Are they sturdy? If so I may go back without him to buy!

Well, they are not completely stable. There is a noticable "jiggle" to the Vika I just bought. My kids say it is fine. But before this we used an ultra-steady Lakeshore table. If you're looking for something extremely steady, I'd get a desk, not a table.
