minchenk
My kids and I have been working so hard during the school year. We want to take a break. I'd like to find some good classical movies for them to watch. Can any one suggest some good classical movies (such as Little House in the Prairie...etc) for 6-7 years old? Thanks! ~Michelle
Jean in Newcastle
"The Apple Dumpling Gang"!
Snickerdoodle
I don't know what you mean by classical movie, but I would like my kids to see Lost in Space. Do you remember that? "Danger, Will Robinson, Danger!" ETA: I am speaking of the 1965 series.
Pster
not sure if these are "classic" enough but ones I remember....or the kids have seen.... Mary Poppins ET Charlie and The Chocolate Factory Chitty-chitty Bang-bang The Black Stallion Swiss Family Robinson Wizard of Oz Sound of Music Alice in Wonderland The Love Bug Charlotte's Web Old Yeller A Little Princess Little Women - there are probably a bunch of musicals I can't think of that you may like too! - and tons of older Disney cartoon movies have fun! Pata
Don't know if you call this a classic or not, but "Hello Dolly" with Barbara Striesand was on PBS this weekend. My 6yo dd was glued to the TV (and I was singing along since I have seen this movie about 100 times, it was one of my mom's favorites). Guest Virginia Dawn
We brought this home for the kids to watch and it was a real lesson in how much television has changed. The action was soooo sloooow, and story lines so goofy. My kids kept looking at me as though I was crazy for making them watch it. LOL. JFSinIL
The original National Velvet is great! Also - the Black Stallion (note, the dad does die early on in the shipwreck scenes). Homeward Bound, about the three pets traveling through wilderness to get home, is also very good. Totoro, animated, is wonderful. I also like the Spencer Tracy film Captains Courageous, and Technicolor Thief of Bagdad and jungle Books (with Sabu - not the Disney cartoon). Meet Me in St. Louis is a fun musical which also shows idealized family life in turn of the century St. Louis.

Mary Poppins Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Easter Parade The Sound of Music Swiss Family Robinson Sherlock Holmes...w/Jeremy Brett...you do have to be cautious with these! Pride and Prejudice...seriously...they love this!...the one with Colin Firth Anne of Green Gables...yup...love it! Also, what about The Little Rascals or the Three Stooges? minchenk
Thanks you all for all the great movies you recommended for my little ones. I was not born and educated in the US and knew very few about the culture and movies here. Your suggestion is a great help to my family!! Yeah! When I said "classic movies", I meant great movies from literature or movies such as The Sound of Music...etc. Thanks you all again! I'll check them out! Pajama Mama
My dd is 7 and one of her favorite classic movies is My Fair Lady. It's a bit long and yes it's a musical. But she absolutely loves it. She surprised the heck outta me.
jkwynn
We just got Bedknobs and Broomsticks yesterday. :) And I *think* the older version of Wonka is called Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (Gene Wilder is Wonka). The newer one is called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (w/ Johnny Depp as Wonka). I like them both for different reasons, but the older one is my favorite. ETA: Just saw your last post about movies from literature. Did anybody say Stuart Little yet?
Sara R
My boy loves Robin Hood and Captain Blood.
