I copied and pasted the equipment list to make getting lab materials together easier. I thought I would share it in case it helps anyone else.

So, I am curious who is using this next year. :bigear:

I personally think it will be so much fun, and I am so impressed with how well put together it is!

A.C.S. shipped my free cold packs UPS, and I received them in three days!

We are :seeya: I had been slowly compiling my cart at home science tools, so it was helpful to have your list for double checking. I had missed the equal mass kit! Will Flinn scientific sell to homeschoolers? It says on their website they only sell to certified school addresses, but I don't know if they check.

Actually, I have one little kid doing Inquiry In Action and my older one is doing Middle School Chemistry. We'll see how it goes. I think it is going to be a fun year!

Updated the link for the equal mass set.

Oh, and I was able to find Super Washing Soda (sodium carbonate) from my local Kroger. You can call phone number 1-800-524-1328 and have the UPC code 33200-03020. The service will ask for your zip code and then tell you places in your area that sell the item. The person I spoke to did not require the UPC code.

We'll be doing the program this coming school year. I belong to the American Chemical Society and their organization really puts together quality materials.

Thanks for the material list. It's a big help!

I wanted to add comments on local availability for two items:

Copper(II) sulfate can often be found at hardware stores or Home Depot as a root killer. Sometimes it's found in the septic tank area.

Tincture of iodine can be ordered through the pharmacy at places like Walgreen's and Meijer's. They used to have it on the shelves at drugstores, but don't seem to anymore. Depending on what it's used for (I haven't located the lesson in the plans that needs it), the povidone iodine solution might also work (this is usually on drugstore shelves).

I know, right? She is awesome! :001_smile:

I want to say she might be my new best friend. This was so wonderful to come across tonight. I was ready to put together the list tonight and searched for MSC to see if anyone had any suggestions for good deals on where to buy stuff. Never imagined I'd hit the jackpot like this!

Wowzers. Thank you all!

I already had some of the items from doing chemistry with my eldest, so that throws things off. The most expensive items will be the mass and density kits and scale if you do not already have one. I already have glass graduated cylinders (again from chemistry), but I am opting to buy some plastic ones because the boys like to use them when they play Harry Potter and such.

You may already have student thermometers and a magnifying glass (I just wanted more).

I can show you what my cart looks like without the scale, mass kit (Home Science Tools doesn't sell it), and lacking a few chemicals I already had (universal indicator, copper sulfate, washing soda which I bought at Kroger, the 250 mL bottle, alcohol lamp, not sure what else I'm missing).

CH-CITRICA Citric acid, powder, 30 g $4.00

CE-SPOTP12 Spot plate, porcelain, 12 cavities $2.95

CH-ALKASEL Alka-Seltzer tablets, 2/pk $1.50

CE-CYPP100 Graduated cylinder, poly, 100 ml $7.40

CE-CYPP50 Graduated cylinder, poly, 50 ml $12.80

EL-ALCLIP2 Alligator clip leads, 2/pk $1.50

MC-DENCUBE Density Cube Set, 10 cubes $28.95

ME-THERMME Thermometer, aluminum back $3.70

MC-BALRING Ball and Ring Apparatus $9.95

OP-MAGNIFY Magnifying glass, 2" dia, 3X $2.70

Total = $82.40

There is free shipping until Friday with code 6SHIP12

So, around $120 perhaps? Three thoughts on this:

1. If you plan on teaching the younger ones one day and/or you are planning to teach chemistry in high school, they won't be wasted.

2. I'm sure the equipment resells well.

3. There are online labs which can be watched in place of labs requiring more expensive equipment.

I console myself by remembering the $400 I spent on high school chemistry.

Also, many of the items are ones lying around your house, but some may not be. I'm going to print my list out and highlight what I have. Then, I'll make a list of things I need to collect over the summer -- various disposable cups, flat toothpicks, metal can, gallon ziplock bags, etc. I'm going to put them in a large box as soon as I get my hands on them.

Brown paper towels -- I'll be on the lookout when I use public restrooms.

You may be able to find some of these things in stores catering to small businesses, the sort that sell giant bags of pudding mix and whatnot. Like Smart and Final, or GFS. They sell patty paper, too, for those who use it for geometry activities.

Okay, I spent all yesterday going through the text making teacher preparation notes, noting suppliers, and organizing the supplies by type to make it easy to prepare a supply box over the summer. I hope this helps someone.

Here is the file:

http://www.keepandshare.com/doc/4258391/supply-list-pdf-july-7-2012-11-05-am-123k?da=y

If that doesn't work, try this short link: http://kvisit.com/S1_SDAg

I am really excited about this program!

Also, I had http://www.bestvaluecopy.com/ print and bind the entire document double-sided for my ease. Shipped, this cost me $25. I printed the activity sheets for the boys with my own printer. With an inkjet, it probably would have been cheaper to have ordered three binders instead.

Thank you, thank you! I tried to click on the link, but it said it was not a valid page. ??

I have been printing out just the Activity Sheets, Student Reading and Tests. I wish I'd know about bestvaluecopy (never heard of it!). That sounds like a great price. Thanks for that, too. Great for future reference.

OK Dawn, I think you just made my science decision for me. I have looked at this Science program again and again and kept wondering is I could do it. Your enthusiasm and all of the helps you have gathered are amazing.

Who knew about the printing option?? Awesome!

Thanks,

THANK YOU Nestof3!!! The supply list is so helpful. I appreciate you sharing your work. I compiled a supply list for CPO Earth and Space last year and know how many hours go into it. My DD and I are both looking forward to a fun year with ACS.

You are both very welcome. Last night I did my laminating and prepared all my games for Ellen McHenry's Elements (which we are doing before ACS Chemistry).

Dawn, are you doing just the games or are you going to use the curriculum? I can't decide! It looks great (just like everything else, right?!).

Just wanted to say that some of the items needed for ACS chemistry look like they are cheaper at Delta education - for instance the density cubes are $19.95. I haven't checked out there yet so don't know for sure that they sell to others and not just schools - hope not. Also, they have the balance used in the course for $4.95.

I've been looking through this course and it looks great - I'm looking forward to it.

I am doing all of both things -- ACS and Elements except I am not doing the lab in Elements with the pencils and battery because that one is also in ACS, and I like the lab handouts. Oh, we won't make the pillowcase, and I don't know how many of the skits my kids will want to do -- we may just read through them.

The fishing game -- we will just put them on the floor and play with our hands. I really don't want to get that detailed.

I love my laminator and paper trimmer at time like these! I also used my circle punches (I use them for scrapbooking) to punch out molecules for ACS instead of cutting so much by hand.

Nice! Thanks for letting us know. And yes, anyone can order from them. They also have the equal mass kit. Shoot. I wish I had known this. ha ha

Google "hardwound roll towels". It looks they are sold all over, including office supply places and janitorial supply places. The trick would be to get a single roll rather than a six pack...:tongue_smilie:

I took six paper towels from my local Kroger (the grocery store I always go to), and my husband got some brown napkins from 7-11.

How is this going for folks?

We are in unit 2, and I have to say that so far, it isn't that exciting. For example, unit 2 so far has been evaporation and now condensation. Really? For a middle schooler? I really cannot get my almost 13 year old to get excited about watching drops of water evaporate off a paper towel. Same thing with the condensation. I told him what we would be doing and he was able to verbally explain the entire lesson without even looking at the worksheet.

Does it get any more challenging? Because I am thinking I need to switch to TOPS. Their 'Analysis' and 'Cohesion/Adhesion' are looking pretty good right now.

It's going okay for us. We had a good discussion about the metal/plastic conduction section that led into other science-y questions somewhat unrelated to the topic, but interesting. Instead of doing the styrofoam model building, they enjoyed getting out the Molymod kit we have and building ball-and-stick vs. space-filling, etc. I agree, not earth-shaking stuff, but hidden in those topics are often potential misconceptions, like what the bubbles in boiling water are, does the temperature of boiling water change after it reaches boiling point, etc.

We'll probably keep plugging away.

In any case, don't miss National Chemistry Week next week. The 2012 theme is nanotechnology. ACS has links to resources. The Journal of Chemical Education also has free resources at http://pubs.acs.org/page/jceda8/ncw2012.html. Their first activity with the refrigerator magnet is good and requires few materials.
