Kate in Arabia
They're having a literature festival here and at the opening ceremony they are looking for kids from different nationalities to participate wearing their national dress. What would you consider a "national dress" for this kind of function? I think this can go in so many different directions...
Jean in Newcastle
Unless you are talking about the national dress of different Native American tribes, there is no true American dress. I suppose the closest thing to it for for someone in Texas would be a cowboy outfit! But even that is a regional thing. In general though, the American people are immigrants and would wear the national dress of where they came from. At least that's how I see it. Mothersweets
Blue jeans? Jean jacket? with sunglasses? I'm thinking Jimmy Dean, Levi's commercials - that sort of look to me says "America".
Ibbygirl
Jeans, sneakers and t shirts. Oh and they should all be chewing gum. :p hehehe My friend who is from Germany told me that whenever she went to the movies in her country she could always tell who the American in the film was by their chewing gum.

I remember being shocked at the number of people wearing baseball caps when I came home from living in France.
momofkhm
:iagree: with what everyone said, really. When I think about a national dress for USA, I think about what our athletes where in the march of athletes at the Olympics. I don't always agree with it what they wear, but that's where my mind goes.

Kate in Arabia
I passed along the ideas, thanks for the comments. I don't think we'll participate (there are rehearsals and it's and hour-plus drive each way), but I'm interested to see what they come up with. elegantlion
I would go with jeans, sneakers, logo t-shirt, and a logo hoodie.
justasque
Something stars-and-stripes would be good. I'd go for jeans or little denim skirt, red or blue plaid shirt, denim or leather vest, stars-and-stripes bandanna, cowboy hat, cowboy boots. Or it could be quasi-Native-American, depending on how you feel about that. Or if you wanted to go historical, you could do Pilgrim or Prairie Girl. gardenmom5
jeans and t-shirts. the olympic team has been outfitted in cowboy attire to represent US national dress. cowboy is western - NOT "just" texas.
Parrothead
For casual I'd go with jeans and a knit shirt of some type. For formal I'd go with a suit for men and a dress for women.
Jean in Newcastle
Actually, most countries' national dress is not modern dress but folk dress from long ago. I think that Prairie dress or buckskin or the like would be the most "authentic". You could have different national dress for different parts of the US!
