coffeefreak
Is anyone incorporating it into school? I've found some worksheets, but I thought we could share ideas :) ETA Whoops! JadeOrchidSong
We will make dumplings (pot stickers) as well as glutinous rice balls stuffed with red bean paste boiled in home-made rice wine. We might go to a Chinese new year performance, too.
freeindeed
My youngest is adopted from China, so we celebrate the Chinese New Year. We have special food, make crafts, and read books. I have several books about China in our home library that we've collected over the years, so we choose from those. We also have a Chinese New Year Parade in a local city, which is fun. We get our other ideas from the following books/sites: http://www.amazon.com/Moonbeams-Dumplings-Dragon-Boats-Activities/dp/0152019839 http://crafts.kaboose.com/dragon.html http://www.apples4theteacher.com/holidays/chinese-new-year/

ScoutTN
Yeah! Thanks for the fun info. :001_smile: I teach a kids' class at church on missions and I need some fun new things for Chinese New Year.
Dmmetler
We don't celebrate the regular new year (too many bad associations at that time of year to be in a celebratory mood), so when DD developed an interest in the Chinese New Year, we started celebrating it. We'll go to the local celebration, clean the house, make dragons and have them dance around, read several books that we pull out each year, and give DD her "lucky money". It's only a shadow of the full celebration, but she enjoys it, and we do, too.
missmoe
We celebrate Chinese New Year. Where we live now does not have many asians--we miss celebrating in San Francisco!
pitterpatter
Yes! It will be our social studies lesson that day. :001_smile: We are using the lesson from this resource book. You can view it on page 72. (There are a couple of book suggestions.) http://teacherexpress.scholastic.com/nonfiction-literacy-building-booklets-activities Checked out this book from our local library. Looking into a couple of others. Edited January 8, 2012 by pitterpatter

pitterpatter
Me again. :tongue_smilie: If anyone's interested in this book, there's a new one in library binding (actually, I think there may be two) on Amazon (not Prime Eligible...third party seller Clean Earth Books) for just $4 shipped. I just bought one from a different seller for the same price. I plan on donating it to our local library after we're finished with it. http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0375937455/ref=tmm_hrd_new_olp_1?ie=UTF8&condition=new
HejKatt
We'll be in Singapore at the time celebrating with my parents, so could I consider it an elaborate field trip? :001_smile:  Seriously, I've also checked out my library (including some of the books PP mentioned) so I can give my dc a background prior to the actual event. Here are some of the customs which I think can be carried out in the US. 1. Decorating the home - Fresh flowers and citrus fruit, narcissus smells great and is easily available http://www.chineseparade.com/pdf/fruits_flowers_brochure.pdf - Goodies If you wanted to bake with your dc, this website looks good http://messywitchen.com/tag/chinese-new-year-cookies/ - Paper cutting (ETA: Use red paper) This blog has some designs: http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_61f0094e0100n6w6.html 2. Tea serving - This is when children serve tea to their parents/elders in the morning, and parents wish them well and offer them red/lucky packets. Often, some stock phrases are used, e.g. parents often encourage children to 步步高升 (reach a higher level, i.e. improvement in school) while we would wish them 身壮力健 (good health). Here is a worksheet with some of the illustrations and stock greetings I mentioned above. http://engres.ied.edu.hk/nss/tasks/NSS_09_10/NSS10_ModelE/ModelE(K.H.Cheung)Poem-Songs.pdf Also, another website to generate the phrases and print out: http://www.discoverhongkong.com/eng/interactive/huichun/index.jhtml Finally, the Southwest Chinese Parade has some history and crafts for students. http://www.chineseparade.com/students.asp Edited January 8, 2012 by leeyeewah
coffeefreak
Cute! I am LOVING this thread!!!! Thanks so much everyone! leeyeewah- I love the tea serving idea. My youngest is allergic to soy, so I was trying to figure out what we should do food wise. She loves tea parties so that's the perfect solution! pitterpatter-I did try to sign up for the Panda Express thing, but it says the deadline was last night. OPPS!!!!! It took my address so we'll see if I get a packet. Blessings! Dorinda
Sebastian (a lady)
Is anyone incorporating it into school? I've found some worksheets, but I thought we could share ideas :) ETA Whoops! It's the 23rd. So sorry! Exploring Chinatown is a really good book. It has good info on Chinese culture. It focuses on San Francisco, but the info would be good even if you didn't have a local Chinatown.
woolybear
I love this book http://www.amazon.com/Dumpling-Soup-Jama-Kim-Rattigan/dp/0316730475 We've read it lots of times, but I just took it out from the library again today.

pitterpatter
Anyone get their free Panda Express kit yet? Unless it's in my mailbox right now, I haven't. :glare: Cutting it a bit close, if they actually want people to use it.

freeindeed
I just found this: http://chinesefood.about.com/od/diningout/r/fortunecookie.htm We're going to make these on Monday.:)
2cents
We are in a 4 school day unit study. I bought the Currclick unit study and it was short and fun. We made Chinese lanterns, a Bunraku pop-up theater and watched U-Tube videos of both. I found some great short Powerpoint presentations on Chinese New Year, history and culture etc. at http://www.pppst.com We did the Red Envelopes and baked Nian Gao (Chinese New Year sticky cake). Started our festivities on Wed and on Fri I made a scavenger hunt for the girls. I used cupcake wrappers and slipped a clue or riddle inside. It kinda looked like a fortune cookie. The final clue directed them to the fridge for a goodie treat of Mochi ice cream, Ramune soda and Pokey. It was a lot of fun! Fri Nite we went to a Chinese buffet and there was a lot of food but it despite the good reviews, it wasn't all that great and two of us spent the day today nursing what looks like a case of food related stomach aches. :( Oh well. Monday, we're planning a trip to the Asian store so the girls can redeem some coupons I slipped in their red envelopes for some Boba Tea and treats. We're kinda combining Chinese and Japanese but we're learning Japanese language too so it all works out. That's our celebration of the Chinese New Year. Fun Stuff! elise1mds
We're going to a Chinese New Year party with some HS friends, one of whom was adopted from China (her sister was adopted from Vietnam, and they're about to get a little brother from China soon). DS is excited, and so am I!
pitterpatter
Well, I never got my Panda Express packet and I signed up for it before Christmas, I think (or right after). I was hoping to use the DVD. Ah, well. Just finished putting together everything for Monday. We will read Bringing in the New Year by Grace Lin and Lion Dancer: Ernie Wan's Chinese New Year by Kate Waters. Then, we'll complete and color a little booklet that reinforces the highlights of the holiday. We'll finish up by making a paper lantern out of construction paper. Wish we had an Asian market close. Better yet, a little celebration somewhere where they have dancing dragons. I know DD would love that.

coffeefreak
Me too! I got it yesterday. We've all been sick with the flu, so our party had to be postponed till Friday. I went to World Market and bought a TON of stuff that even my soy free daughter can eat. I think we'll do the lantern craft, and we're going to paint the girl's faces and dress up. I have to make a sponge cake tomorrow, but I don't know if I'll be able to steam it. We'll have to see. Blessings! Dorinda
Dmmetler
I got the panda express packet. I can't say it's anything exciting (short video that's mostly advertising, activity pages, and coupons)-they could easily have put the material on their website and had the same effect. pitterpatter
I wasn't impressed either, but I was kind of excited about having a whole pack of bookmarks (the coupon cards). :D I got the panda express packet. I can't say it's anything exciting (short video that's mostly advertising, activity pages, and coupons)-they could easily have put the material on their website and had the same effect.
