kandty
I just read the WTM two months ago and have been making small changes to our lesson plans this year and making big changes for next school year. I am wanting to put a small lesson on introduction to geography for my first grader next month and was looking for some suggestions of books or what stuff I should teach. I am hoping just to use the books I have on hand or what I can get at the library.
tuckabella
Maps and Globes by Knowlton Geography from A to Z by Knowlton Me on the Map, by (sorry I forget) If you look any of these up on Amazon, you could also scroll through the list that is under it to see what other people looked at and bought. Sometimes that leads me to other good books.

RahRah
With my first grader we started with the world - continents & oceans. Once he knew those, we started on each continent and the countries within, along with major rivers, mountains and lakes or other landforms that are notable like deserts. I've tied the continents to SOTW as we go along, but have had to move along a couple of times. I've structured this year to skip the Americas when they are first presented in SOTW 1 (Chapter 26) and we'll go back to that as our last chapter so we can do North & South America, then segway into US States for the summer, starting with our state. Shifra
I am not really a classical homeschooler, but I am using very loosely Learn At Home Grade 1 and we are right now learning about the continents. I am using as supplements the following books: My World: A First Look at the World by Anne Millard (ISBN: 978-0789465139) My First Atlas by Fiammetta Dogi and Alessandro Bartolozzi We do a continent a week. Everyday I read aloud the information from these books about the continent of the week and then ask questions about it. I also have a continent puzzle of the world (that I picked up from Montessori N Such). I expect my son to know the names of all the continents and to find them on the map. Classically Minded
We use "Usborne's Internet-Linked Geography Encyclopedia: With Complete World Atlas" as a spine for our geography and find its a great resource.

Tranquility7
We used these workbooks to develop map skills this year: Scholastic Success With Maps (Gr 1) Practice Makes Perfect Map Skills (Gr 1) They are a bit redundant, but my DS loves maps, so we did both. We also used these atlases: (bought them both used on ABE books, btw) DK My First Atlas Rand McNally Picture Atlas of the World Again, we could have gotten by with just one, but DS loves them both. We also have different large world maps all over our house (one on his bedroom wall, one in the living room, one in dh's office, and a globe on our bookshelf). And best of all, we bought placemats of all the continents (with countries and physical features labeled) and the USA from Rainbow Resource. DS has learned SOOOOOO much from those placemats! He knew all his states by the time he was 4, and now he is learning physical features and countries of all the different continents, etc. We just point to stuff on his placemat at mealtimes and talk about it, and over the months he has learned a ton that way. Now that we are finished with the map skills workbooks, I have printed off maps of the different continents and the US, and put them in a sheet protector and have him trace them with markers and label them with little post-it labels I have made. He loves doing his maps! I also like the geography ideas in The Core and will start him on freehand drawing sometime soon... I started the sheet protector tracing first as a way to lead into the freehand drawing slowly.
mcconnellboys
We've used the Geography from A to Z for landforms, too and really like it! You can model various landforms out of play doh or modeling clay, etc. to test knowledge, too. For grammar stage world geography study, here are the books I used: These are mostly picture books. I have a book by DK called Children Just Like Me: Celebrations! This looks at the way children in different cultures celebrate various holidays. I used it along with some cultural atlases that look at peoples from around the world. I also have a book called Children From Australia to Zimbabwe: A Photographic Journey Around the World, by Maya Ajmera and Ana Rhesa Versola. This book details info. on one country for each letter of the alphabet and lists all other countries in the world that also begin with that letter. I pulled a list of library books to correlate with each country detailed. These books are either about some aspect of the country or culture, or were written by a native author (or both). I did not manage at the time I made the list to put down all authors' names, so sorry about that!
