La Condessa
For those of you who have already done SOTW with your kids, what were your favorite projects or activities that you did along with the reading? Say, if you had to pick just five or six for each year. . . Thanks
Lovedtodeath
Usborne has an Ancient Egyptian kid kit that is excellent. We painted Chinese characters. Emily made a toga. Those are the ones that stand out.
La Condessa
Hi. My computer stopped working right after I posted this the other day, so I hope nobody minds if I resurrect a now-old post. I was really hoping to get some input on the very best activities to go along with SOTW for help in planning. There are so many ideas available, I thought this would be an easy way to compile a best-hits list. Thank you.
2_girls_mommy
We did the archeological dig in our sandbox. It was a GREAT way to start the year and get them excited about history. Next was the cave art. They were pretty cool. We made clay seals (can't remember which culture this was from..oops!) The thing that we really liked that stands out, was our model of a roman road. We made it out of sand concrete that I cooked on the stove, and it showed the 5 layers of the roads. My girls were really proud of that! We did so many last year. But these were some fun ones. Wheres Toto
Are the activities mentioned above in the SOTW activity books? They sound like a lot of fun.
Chris in VA
Yes, the AG is a gold mine of activities, esp at the SOTW 1 and 2 levels. OP, you are wanting activities to go along with SOTW 1, Ancients, correct?
2_girls_mommy
Yes, mine were all projects from SOTW A.G. vol. 1. We are in vol. 2 this year, but I assumed you meant vol. 1. We also made instruments when in Ancient Africa and had a "band." We had a Roman lunch while dressed in Togas, outside reclining on a tablecloth. There are just tons of easy fun stuff in vol. 1! Have fun.

We loved those activities from the first one... So far from the second we love: Making the sugar cookie Roman collumns. All of the paper dolls. The edible castle. The viking ships. Most of the board games. Ones I think we'll love: Many of the The Mayan Aztec and Incan activities. The Treasure hunt
kelouis75
Are the activities mentioned above in the SOTW activity books? They sound like a lot of fun. Yes, they are. My kids really loved the cave painting and cuneiform tablets. So far we LOVE the AGs.

Susie in CA
We are doing SOTW 1 for the second time and the boys still love the same activities. We are doing them again.... We did all the activities with clay. We just love clay. Almost all the board games. All the cooking. The boys also love the play type activities. i.e Make a Catacomb or Sumu Wrestling. We are doing those again, too. Susie
Mom_Abear
We are loving SOTW 1 w/ the AG guide here, too! :) Our favorites are the Nile Model, the sugar cube pyramid, and the Roman road model. We're *still* working on our Great Wall of China (from a kit). You can view our projects here - it's a link to our Weekly Reports tagged "Ancients." KrissiK
We're in the middle of SOTW1. We did the chicken mummy. Great activity. It was rather.... er... involved, but the kids loved it. Here's a link to my blog when then mummy was done. http://kristen-thehappygardener.blogspot.com/2010/03/chick-menotep-is-finally-mummy.html and http://kristen-thehappygardener.blogspot.com/2010/03/it-takes-little-imagination.html The last post tells Chick-menotep's fate. My nephew actually cried when he read that post. I felt bad. So, that was a good one. The one we did recently was the making a replica of the volcano on the island of Thera that exploded and wiped out the Minoan civilization. Or at least crippled it . Here's the link to that one. THe kids had a great time with that. http://kristen-thehappygardener.blogspot.com/2010/04/volcanic-action-here-at-home.html We've really loved the ancients and have been meandering our way through the book. It's been a great time.
runamuk
The hands-down favorite here was the Roman soldier's meal. My kids still talk about that and ask regularly to put that on our dinner menu.
