Can you suggest some books with main characters who have personality disorders?

Recommended Posts

I'm mostly looking for fiction, but memoirs and autobiographies would be good too.

Here's a list of personality disorders:

  • Antisocial personality disorder
  • Avoidant personality disorder
  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Dependent personality disorder
  • Histrionic personality disorder
  • Narcissistic personality disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder
  • Paranoid personality disorder
  • Schizoid personality disorder
  • Schizotypal personality disorder

There are plenty of books about schizophrenia, multiple personalities, depression, substance abuse, etc. But I'm having trouble finding things specifically about PD.

The Mr. Monk books. I'll have to think of others but that one jumped out at me.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest?

I Never Promised You a Rose Garden?

I'm drawing a blank on the Pat Conroy book made into a movie with Barbra Streisand based on his suicidal sister.

Did any authors I think of as having mental illness write semi-autobiographical works?

Sylvia Plath

Edgar Allen Poe

Ernest Hemingway

Carson McCullors (sp?)

Any book by Dr Kay Jameson is worth it's weight in gold. She has saved so many lives with her unflinching honesty. This is a stellar list and particularly Touched by Fire and The Unquiet Mind are ,in my estimation ,must read books for clarity and understanding . I simply cannot praise her work highly enough.

I Know This Much is True by Wallie Lamb....but that is PS...not one you need?

Try 'The Angry Heart'

and "Stop Walking On Eggshells"

And "Becoming Attached" I think explains a few things....about PDs....I got about a 1/4 of the way through it and burned out on on this stuff.

Not to nitpick, but Kay Jamison doesn't have a personality disorder. Personality disorders are Axis II disorders. She has bipolar, which is an Axis I disorder.

There is a good description of both Axis I and Axis II disorders here.

Oops! You are absolutely right. Most of the books I listed have to do with OCD and mood disorders, just where my mind goes when mental health issues come up. Of the ones I listed, I know that Get Me out of Here and Girl Interupted deal with personality disorders.

Just off the top of my head: Dostoevsky, Kafka, Gogol, Greek tragedies, many Shakespearean tragedies, Go Ask Alice, Anthony Burgess. Many famous plays (Shaw, Ibsen, O'Neill, Tennessee Williams, etc.). Poe, Bierce, H.P. Lovecraft, Phillip K. Dick, Harlan Ellison, Prozac Nation, Bee Season.

Note that none of these are suitable for younger than high school, I'd say 15 or above.
