Perry
I'm mostly looking for fiction, but memoirs and autobiographies would be good too. Here's a list of personality disorders: Antisocial personality disorder Avoidant personality disorder Borderline personality disorder Dependent personality disorder Histrionic personality disorder Narcissistic personality disorder Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder Paranoid personality disorder Schizoid personality disorder Schizotypal personality disorder There are plenty of books about schizophrenia, multiple personalities, depression, substance abuse, etc. But I'm having trouble finding things specifically about PD. I'm drawing a blank on the Pat Conroy book made into a movie with Barbra Streisand based on his suicidal sister. Did any authors I think of as having mental illness write semi-autobiographical works? She has saved so many lives with her unflinching honesty. This is a stellar list and particularly Touched by Fire and The Unquiet Mind are ,in my estimation ,must read books for clarity and understanding . I simply cannot praise her work highly enough. asta
Not to nitpick, but Kay Jamison doesn't have a personality disorder. Personality disorders are Axis II disorders. She has bipolar, which is an Axis I disorder. There is a good description of both Axis I and Axis II disorders here. a

Most of the books I listed have to do with OCD and mood disorders, just where my mind goes when mental health issues come up. Of the ones I listed, I know that Get Me out of Here and Girl Interupted deal with personality disorders.
plimsoll
Just off the top of my head: Dostoevsky, Kafka, Gogol, Greek tragedies, many Shakespearean tragedies, Go Ask Alice, Anthony Burgess. Many famous plays (Shaw, Ibsen, O'Neill, Tennessee Williams, etc.). Poe, Bierce, H.P. Lovecraft, Phillip K. Dick, Harlan Ellison, Prozac Nation, Bee Season. Note that none of these are suitable for younger than high school, I'd say 15 or above.
