Please help, wedding dresses

Recommended Posts

My dd will be getting married in November. She is looking at wedding dresses. We are conservative dressers and she does not want strapless. The church would not allow it anyway. All you can find at bridal stores are strapless. We have a seamstress that makes wedding dresses. She went to try on dresses to find the style that she likes and fell in love with a dress from Davids Bridal. It is an a-line dress with a full beaded lace overlay. She loves this lace! We have searched online for the lace but cannot find it. This is one option we thought of and would like your opinion. We would buy 2 dresses and the seamstress could use the second dress to make a jacket for the dress. The jacket would have to be enclosed to have a higher neckline. Not real high, but the top of the dress would not be showing at all. I would do a link to the dress, but do not know how! If you could go to davidsbridal.com and look up dress style CT2406 and let me know what you think of our idea, I would greatly appreciate the help. I have never seen a bride wear a jacket and just don't know how it would look. Opinions needed!

Do you mean you want to use the same lace for a jacket? If she loves the dress, I would try and do something with it and then find a jacket for over it, did you see this

You could go with something like that.

Also someone has this dress on e-bay: http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=CT2406+

I can't believe all of the sleeveless, I would never wear a sleeveless dress. Another option is to check e-bay, a friend got married last summer and bought a dress for about 100$ off there.

Good luck and have fun!

Kristine

What a lovely dress!

Did you ask David's about adding sleeves? According to their website, they do add sleeves.

I'd probably add a sheer neck/sleeve to the dress if that would be enough to satisfy the bride and the church. Something along this line, though I'd do more fitted sleeves!

Your question intriqued me so I looked around the net at dresses....there were some with bolero-type jackets and a few that had sheer, full-length coats over the dress. Gorgeous.

If strapless is still the style when my dd gets married, we'll be modifying the dress as well. I don't know why the stores can't carry a better selection of styles!

I would not want to NEED to wear a jacket during my entire wedding.

I agree on the sleeveless thing.

When I got married, I tried on a dress with big puffy shoulders and short sleeves (what can I say; it was the 80s), and ordered it. When it came in, the sleeves were off the shoulder. Off. the. shoulder.! I was so mortified at the idea of appearing like that, especially in wedding pictures for years to come. I told the fitter than we had to figure out how to make the sleeves stay up, like on the model I had tried on. And she argued with me! She said that it was obvious that the sleeves were supposed to be like that! She said that the dress would be ruined and that it could not possibly ready in time! I was nice, but stubborn. I asked her if she would get the model so that we could look at it together. She went out of the room and sent in her supervisor, who fixed everything. It was so weird.

Not sure if you are wanting other ideas for finding a dress or if you want this dress specifically, but have you thought about looking in unconventional places? I was just in GoodWill and they had 3 absolutely gorgeous dresses with sleeves for under 100 bucks including the veil. Also, second hand stores/consignment shops will carry dresses. Or try placing an add in the wanted section. I spent over $1,000 on my beautiful wedding dress but now wish I would have thought of looking around to find a stunning dress for under 100 dollars.

Just another idea.

Whatever you decide have fun and enjoy the wedding planning.

I agree with a few points made by other posters:

1) Except that you could find the second dress at a bargain, I, personally, would not purchase two dresses at full price to gain the cover you desire. I think there are better options that would not be as pricey.

2) Personally, I think a jacket made out of the exact same lace would be too much of a good thing. I like the link supplied by another poster that had a bolero type jacket out of a solid. I believe it enhances the beauty of the lace in the dress better.

3) My personal preference would be to go the route of having a bodice/sleeves built into the dress or look for another dress with similarly beautiful lace that is already in that style.

In any case, know that I share your sentiment with desiring more coverage for a bride than a bared chest/shoulders. :-)

HTH,

Sharon

I fell in love with a cute dress too. The problem was the very low neckline. I got, from the manufacturer of the dress when I ordered it, some extra lace for the bodice. A seamstress expertly attached it to the bustline and it looked like the dress was made that way. No cleavage or top of the boob showing, and no cover-up.

Personally, yes, I do think a jacket over a wedding dress is odd. She may regret it later on.

My step-mother used to be in the bridal business so she knew about ordering extra lace/fabric pieces from the manufacturer. She couldn't do it online. She had to call. Ask David's Bridal about it.

If that still doesn't work, I wouldn't go through the expense of two dresses. I would have a seamstress work something up that matches the top of the bodice and attach it like mine. You should totally not be able to tell it's an add-on when she's done. It might take a bit of work to match beads and embroidery, but it would surely be cheaper than a second dress and better looking than a jacket.

I don't care for strapless either. Have you seen the dresses here? I know you said you want a dress and a jacket - but I think these are lovely :)

Here's a link to the large local fabric shop, Mary Jo's Fabrics. They have an incredible selection of fabrics, especially for bridal (the store is the size of a large grocery store). They don't have pictures online, but there is an option to describe the fabric you are looking for and they may be able to help you find it. http://www.maryjos.com/shopping/default.asp?dontcache=5173

Here's one possible source, but it is pricey

http://www.lacestar.com/laces.html may be able to identify something similar

If you can find the fabric, have you checked the pattern books for a style that she likes? Some do show a shrug with the dress

Good luck!

I bought my daughter's dress there and was very pleased. There are so many styles to choose from in the bridal stores on e-bay, loads with sleeves.

Good luck!

  • 3 years later...

When I worked at a very high end wedding shop pre kids, they had a stunning dress in there comprised of two layers. The first layer was a simple cream totally plain dress. I think the bottom layer was strapless but it mave had simple straps. Then over the dress was a long sleeved floor length second layer, fully covered up to the neck with a straight neckline, I think its called bateau neckline. The lace was fairly dense and really did cover up and the dress was breath takingly stunning.

You could always find a plain simple dress and then get the dress maker to make a top layer out of lace.I can't find an equivalent of a similar neckline to the one in the shop I worked in. This is a similar dress with a lower neckline or actually maybe more this one but the lace came to the floor and the neckline wasn't so high as the second one.

Two of my friends got married (seperate weddings) recently and both of them had little Bolero jackets that fit over the top of their strapless gown. They looked beautiful. Maybe you could find something like that?

:iagree: My sister had an absolutely gorgeous dress like this.

And geez, guys, what's with all the hate-on for strap-less gowns? I wore one, and I guarantee it showed less cleavage than many, many sleeved gowns. My mom actually picked it out, and she's always been a conservative dresser!

(My dress also had a shawl that went with it, and I wore it around my shoulders in the church and during the wedding ceremony.)

Do a google search using wedding dress bolero jacket, then select images and you'll see a lot of examples.

http://www.google.com/search?q=wedding%20dress%20bolero%20jacket&rls=com.microsoft:*:IE-SearchBox&oe=UTF-8&rlz=1I7DKUS&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi

Yes, it's do-able with two dresses if she wants an exact match on the lace. I suspect a lace only jacket would be a better look with that dress, though. You will want to have a mock-up made in a cheaper fabric made to give her an idea of how a jacket fits with the lines of the dress and adjust size before cutting into the actual fabric.

Ordering the second dress off of ebay sounds like the way to go to keep costs down. With the original dress being on sale you'd still be getting off fairly inexpensively, as far as wedding dress costs go.

Did you go through the reviews on the website to see if you could find a photo of how the dress looks with a jacket?
