  1. My dd could not be more excited about wrapping up her senior year and starting her studies at the University of South Carolina (in pursuit of an Exercise Science degree with a possible double major - minor at least - in Spanish). Ultimately, she wants to go to grad school (either med school, physician's assistant or physical therapy school). She has been invited as a Capstone Scholar (which she has accepted) but hopes to transfer into their honors college. This year has been extremely busy (for her and myself) but most rewarding considering she is our firstborn. We began homeschooling her first grade year and marvel at the fact that 12 short years later, we're graduating our first from EDEN Academy!
  2. Thank you for this. I probably should have clarified that I am speaking to mathematical problem solving. Again, thanks!
  3. I am double posting (see this link to other board - http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1892420#post1892420) out of desperation. Please help. :-}
  4. We just received my rising 8th grader's Stanford scores. While, Math will never be this kid's strong suit, her procedural skills are decent. Her problem solving skills, not so much. Can anyone make recommendations of something we can use to make a difference in this for her? TIA!
  5. My daughter also took the ACT (scores due in next week). We'll see if she's one of those kids that performs better on one of these tests than the other.....
  6. Bittersweet, I must say, as we head into our 12th year of homeschooling. But, to hold the note is to spoil the song.....play on, dear one, play on! My daughter, our oldest, will be taking dual credit courses at our area technical school along with home/resource center courses. We have a good enough idea of what she wants to major in that her DC courses will actually be chipping away at requirements for her major opening the door for her to pursue her goal of minoring in Spanish. It is a very exciting (and overwhelming) time indeed. Congratulations to all who are traversing this path with us!
  7. My daughter (rising senior) took the SAT for the first time June 5 with no real prep. Her scores were less than hoped for *but* we knew before she took the test that her math skills are "behind" and she'll use the summer to bring them up to her potential. Our plan is for her to take weekly practice tests (placing study emphasis on what she misses each time) between now and the Oct 9 test. Folks over at the College Confidential board indicate that it is very reasonable that, with this plan, we can hope for an increase of 200+ points.....
  8. My dd took an SAT prep course (local tutor) and did the Chalkdust SAT Math review discs (total of about 25 hrs worth of her time). We counted that as her honors "project" for her math course this year. (To gain honors credit she's also reading two additional math related books and writing essays for each). FWIW, Sharon
  9. My sister has had a Sandisk for years and loves it. (We happen to have 3 ipod shuffles as well that we enjoy). We purchased dd a Sandisk for Cmas because the shuffle is twice today what they were a few years back when we bought ours. What we like about the Sandisk - you can search for songs individually (rather than settle for what you get with the shuffle) and the FM tuner (great for the Y where you can tune to a TV there). FWIW.
  10. I would search for this phone on ebay. Amazin' what you can find over there..... :D
  11. Well, we really do know which top 3 schools she'll send her scores to, ultimately. Nonetheless, I could be at great peace with waiting until after she retakes the test in October to send any out. *However*, the thing I'm not sure of is this - if I don't take advantage of the 4 complimentary score reports for the June session (deadline of June 14 to indicate schools), will I have to pay to have them sent out in the fall if one section happens to be higher than the Oct score?
  12. the primary source docs was the big drawing card for us, as well.
  13. Kendall, I literally LOL when I got to this part of your post! Thanks for the levity! Thanks, too, for sharing from your experience. I have a rising senior and am thankful for your insight. Lately, I've found myself telling my dd that my efforts to research/investigate options for her have become a full time job!!! (I'd prefer that she stick with the books and let me do some of this legwork..... ;-P)
  14. Same here - November 15 seems to be the general deadline for these in our area.
  15. I rejoice with you, Kelli! :-D Interestingly, the only thing that transfers with dual credit courses here is the credit. Area universities refuse to transfer a grade so that my daughter will "start from scratch" in terms of GPA despite any dual credits she brings with her. In any case, your dd is doing a phenomenal job!
  16. Dd will take the SAT for the first time June 5. I'm confused by the Score Choice option. Should we cite the colleges/universities she ultimately believes she will send to now or wait until she takes it again in October to do so? At first blush, it would seem favorable to wait (and just send the highest scores from each section). However, at least one of her school interests want to see *all* of her testing scores. Can someone please educate me on this Score Choice option? Many thanks!
  17. My dd will use this next year. We do not need the Lit for credit portion so will read the history and a few of the literature books plus the Bible component for honors credit (prefer to do that than claim a 1/2 credit in Bible allowed by our accountability cover). FWIW. :-)
  18. ((HUGS)) Father, I thank you that You have plans and purposes for this young man's life. I thank you that you are on your throne actively at work on his behalf desiring to see that Your kingdom purposes are, indeed, established in his life. We ask that you would enable him to seek You and You alone for all that concerns him and we ask that you would enable Him to trust You every step of the way. Reveal Your undeniable glory in His life in mighty ways. I thank you, in advance, that he will find himself enrolled in the very school that you know will best equip him for the call You've placed upon his life. Above all, may he experience more of You. In the mighty name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
  19. You've got to check out Monroe Bisque by Benjamin Moore. I have my main living area, kitchen, and a bathroom done in this color and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! It is from theirhistorical collection (see link). http://www.benjaminmoore.com/bmpsweb/portals/bmps.portal?_nfpb=true&_br=1&_pageLabel=fh_home&np=colors/HC-26 My accent colors are earth tones/fall colors (deep reds, sage green, golden yellows, etc). My couch and loveseat are dark leather tone like yours and my floors are Brazilian cherry.
  20. Oldest dd (now 17yo) was heading into 1st grade. I knew we should (homeschool), he was not so sure. On a date to make a decision, I finally said, "It's first grade. How bad can we mess up first grade?" He replied, "Well, when you put it that way, OK." Halfway through the first year, he was at least as big an advocate of homeschooling as me. We're now completing our 11th year and have a rising senior in Eden Academy. Happy decision making!
  21. Since the ultimate goal in all of this is to get as much ahead financially as possible, I think these are the more pertinent questions. Since our family also owns a Tundra (2004) and a Sienna (2005)I can speak from experience: Your Tundra will sell for more than your Sienna and the van will cost less in gas (our Tundra gets significantly less mileage per gallon of gas than our van), and cost less in insurance and taxes. Tires - no comparison - our van tires were WAY less expensive than the truck's! ;-{ Bottomline - selling the Tundra will improve your family's finances better than selling the van. If that truly is the real objective in all of this I'd say that it's a no brainer - sell the truck as hard as that may be for your dh. :(
  22. Carole, I am grinning from ear to ear in reading your post. What a blessing! Also, it's good to talk to you again!
