Pam L in Mid Tenn
Rosetta Stone Spanish right now. I hope to have the money for it in the next few months, but DD16 needs to start Spanish 1 NOW. She needs 2 credits of the same language and she is a Jr this year. We started our new academic year today and I found a few free lessons online so she can get started a little bit. Is there another GOOD Spanish 1 program that is less expensive than Rosetta Stone? OR Is there something free/very inexpensive that she could do a few months until I have the money to purchase RS? I have NO spanish background /ability. It must be completely self-teaching. Thanks, Pam
springmama
I am planning on using Breaking the Barriers to teach my 10th grader French this year. I've heard great things about it and it's much less expensive.
SusanAR
This is a post from Jean in Wis which may help. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=95377&highlight=SOS+spanish
lionfamily1999
http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/ I believe it's free. I've never used it, but saved the link just in case :) Hope this helps! Also, you might want to try to do some searches. It seems like there would be a LOT of resources for Spanish.
sunnyca
I second Breaking the Spanish Barrier as an alternative to RS. If you prefer to wait, try looking at the free tutorial at http://studyspanish.com The complete program is fee based but there is plenty available for free to get started while you wait to begin the program you prefer. Pamela H in Texas
livemocha is free and similar to RS but with some interaction with other learners and natives for certain assignments (such as "discuss your favorite meal.").
Quiver0f10
We use SOS spanish also and have been very pleased. At @ $60 for a year you can't go wrong.
KAR120C
Pimsleur is an excellent start to self-teaching Spanish (I like it better than Rosetta Stone actually...) but it's not any cheaper. It is, however, widely available in libraries.
LoriM
We use SOS spanish also and have been very pleased. At @ $60 for a year you can't go wrong. SOS Spanish I worked beautifully for us. We used studyspanish.com when they were in middle school, and it was fine for me to use with them (I had four years of Spanish, and had no problem designing/teaching a Spanish I course). It worked in much the same way as Latina Christina or Latin Primer works for young students. Intro, basics, general concepts, elementary vocabulary. jenadina
I second livemocha. I like it better than Rosetta Stone , and it's free. Mango Languages is also available through many libraries free.
LizzyBee
You can access Tell Me More for free here: http://arlingtonlibrary.org/research/tellmemore.aspx FWIW, some people like it better than Rosetta Stone.
Kareni
You might find this thread of interest since it mentions a free resource for many languages. The thread mentions both pros and cons of this approach. FREE thorough foreign language courses available from Foreign Service Institute Regards, Kareni
dymphna57
This is the two year program. Maybe if I just keep repeating this someone will believe me. This is not illegal or secondhand. They buy the rights and create a new product with everything but the fancy box. Really easy to order from and answer questions promptly. I heard of them through my bil and I ordered software for my film editing ds.

Susan C.
livemocha is free and similar to RS but with some interaction with other learners and natives for certain assignments (such as "discuss your favorite meal."). We just tried Live Mocha..... it is kind of like facebook, the first thing that happened is that an Arab guy wrote to dd to ask her to help him learn English..... so no more :)
mommaduck
Does it have to be Spanish, or would she be willing to work on another language? There are plenty of free online sources for other languages.
AngieW in Texas
I'm using Tell Me More through the Arlington Public Library. It is free. You don't have to have a library card with them. http://arlingtonlibrary.org/research/tellmemore.aspx
