  1. @JennyD, thanks for the link! That looks both interesting and useful.
  2. She is a good student in many subjects. Right now it's hard for me to envision where she might end up because she has so many interests. I think the only thing that can be entirely ruled out is fine arts. She is generally compliant and ready to do whatever is required of her except pick a foreign language!
  3. I'm trying to get dd13 to pick a foreign language. We have done a little Latin, but she got tired of Latin for Children, though we got through Primer B. She did pretty well with it. She's not into Latin or Spanish. Possibly German(?), but for months now, whenever the subject has been broached, she says Yiddish. because she thinks it would be fun and very unlike English. We are not Jewish, nor do we live close to anyplace that might have any kind of Jewish population. The closest city where there are synagogues is an hour away. I am at a little bit of a loss here. Any comments/suggestions are welcome.
  4. Please help. I know somewhere I saw a site where Tarbuck linked to supplemental materials to older editions of his Earth Science textbook, and for the life of me, I cannot find it again. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
  5. I am of two minds on this. Compared to most of humanity, both across time and the globe, we live like kings. We can have food delivered to our doorstep, travel just about where ever, whenever we want, we are free of so many diseases that once killed so many, and yet, the comedian Tom Papas has the joke - it's a good day when you don't have to change your password. When I have wanted to do just one simple thing and have to spend half an hour resetting a password and maybe even then it doesn't work, I do feel like throttling someone. Not that is an excuse to chase the poor soul who crosses my path, but I can see modern day frustrations helping to fuel such a response.
  6. This. Also, I detest poorly trained dogs that jump up on you. And I am afraid I would "train" a dog I detest. Which is why we don't have a dog, even though dh really, really wants one. Because guess who wakes up first and would have to take care of said dog, and guess who sleeps in?
  7. Before youtube, I learned how to knit from the Stitch-n-Bitch books. Excellent instruction. They succeeded where my grandmother did not.
  8. I remember she had A/C issues, as well. Possibly the TPS sensor, too? Anyway, your description made me curious, and I went back to look at the records she gave me, because we were like, "This is very wrong. You should not be taking your car in to get fixed every other month." Hers was a 2011. Just making note of it here as a PSA for anyone in the used market.
  9. We still have a 2007 Corolla with manual transmission. I'm going to be so sad when it's gone and will have no other choice but automatic. ☹️
  10. Yes, but the prerequisite is a sense of humor.
  11. Come to Western NY! It's economically depressed, but neither the weather nor the wildlife will kill you.
  12. I dunno. My mother had one years ago that was an absolute lemon. She kept taking it to the dealership to fix it and they fleeced her unmercifully. They told her $4,000 a year in repairs was normal and fine. 😠
  13. When I was a good deal younger, I was absolutely fascinated with India. As an early 20-something in the mid-90's, I stopped by an Indian shop to have a look at coverlets and statues and things. The proprietor really, really, really wanted me to buy some henna to decorate my hands. I politely declined because I kind of felt like that would be appropriation, because I am not Indian. I now see it periodically on early 20-somethings who are clearly not Indian. 🤷‍♀️

Dd13 regularly eats 2-3x more than dh or I do. I am slightly above average height, and she's already taller than me. A dear relative says we should keep feeding her, because there's a scholarship out there for women who are 5'10" and above. 😄
  15. I love to be helpful, but our presidents books are packed away, and I am not up for digging them out. This topic makes me feel old. I got the resource I used as a spine from Currclick, which no longer exists. What a bummer that libraries don't carry the Venezia books anymore; they are the most engaging series on the presidents that I've come across.
  16. We are going to give the old Writing Strands a try for ds, who is an extremely reluctant writer. I'm hoping that having a week's break after each lesson will facilitate his buy-in.
  17. Mike Venezia did a whole series. They are great! Dd loved them at that age. It stops at George W. Bush. (I think.)
  18. I've never been good with journal prompts. "Think about a time when you felt...." My mind just draws a blank. But there are certain songs, or certain movies that resonate with me because I know exactly what a character feels like. And even then, what happened was so long ago, I don't really remember the particulars, but the feeling I remember clearly.
  19. Perhaps this poem sums it up.
  20. Ugh. Drove all the way to the exercise class yesterday to find out it had been cancelled. Apparently my last class was the week before, and that's why nobody called? I guess it is my fault for not checking the patient portal, but the instructor did not say explicitly that I had my last class, like I've seen him do for everybody else. Anyhoo--I went up and down the attic stairs a lot yesterday. I have boxes of books related to each round of history and we just don't have enough bookshelves for it all. So American history went up, and Ancient history came down. With the chemo pill-induced fatigue, that pretty much meant I was useless this morning. I made myself take a 15 minute walk, so that was something. I felt better after a nap this afternoon. I obviously still need to learn how to pace myself.
  21. Another thing I found helpful was to read up on all the possible side effects, so that I would be mentally prepared. When it turned out that I didn't have to deal with the worst of them, I was immensely grateful. The literature I read indicated that weight loss was a serious concern, but that some patients gain weight. I gained about 6lbs. I can see where weight loss might happen because chemo can mess with your sense of taste. Right after treatment, I would have what seemed like this metallic coating over my tongue for maybe a week or so. I never usually eat jello, but when I was doing chemo, I ate a lot of jello cups because they kind of overpowered that sensation, and I was too tired to fix myself anything else. Also, being too tired to do normal activities can also play into weight gain, which is why even just a 15 minute walk everyday is really important. Yes, you should eat as well as you can, but honestly, when you are being pumped full of toxins an apple a day isn't going to magically fix the immediate effects of that.
  22. I know the world is much different than the rural one in which I grew up. And I know people value their pets much more than they once did - it has been years since I've seen a dog house in a yard. But giving a cat a whole room to itself is hard for me to wrap my head around.
  23. I am sorry. Obviously cancer has a big impact on the patient, but also spouses, who have to deal with all the emotions, changes in household duties, schedules, etc. It effects everything. One good thing is he didn't ignore symptoms, so it can be attended to now, rather than later. I was diagnosed with breast cancer about a year ago. I had surgery, chemo, radiation, and am now taking chemo pills at home. The biggest tip I can give you at this point is how important exercise is. It increases the efficacy of treatment. It helps with fatigue. It helps to speed up recovery. I found this book helpful when I was first diagnosed: https://www.amazon.com/Moving-Through-Cancer-Strength-Training-Caregivers/dp/1797210254/ref=sr_1_1?crid=H855PZUKXJIW&keywords=moving+through+cancer&qid=1687882887&sprefix=moving+through+cancer%2Caps%2C155&sr=8-1 The cancer center I went to offered once a week exercise classes for 12 weeks. They told me as a follow-up, Livestrong sponsors exercise classes at the YMCA for cancer survivors. (FYI, anybody diagnosed with cancer is defined as a survivor.) This might be something to look into. The cancer center also gave me a copy of this book - https://www.amazon.com/What-Eat-During-Cancer-Treatment/dp/160443256X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=X01B21Q0JEWS&keywords=what+to+eat+during+cancer+treatment+book&qid=1687883613&sprefix=what+to+eat+dur%2Caps%2C195&sr=8-1
  24. Thank you for taking the time to set my mind at ease. We're in NY and I'm thinking her final can be just an old Regents exam. I had considered having her actually take the Regents for a split second, but that would mean working with the school district, which is generally hostile to homeschoolers; I try to have as little interaction with them as possible.
