  1. Church fathers writings: http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/ Sola Scriptura is hard to defend even historically - the Scriptures were defined by the Church. I second Mike Aquilina and smth interesting to consider is Scripture Catholic - and explanation of Catholic faith by the Scriptures only. I have tons more. :-)
  2. In a strict sense, only Catholics and Orthodox are not reformed, they are pre-Reformation :-) - all Protestants protested and wanted to reform smth they considered erroneous.
  3. I forgot the best - G.K Chesterton! Heretics Orthodoxy and John Henry Newman - former anglican who became a Catholic cardinal
  4. Peter Kreeft - professor at the Boston College, has lots of free articles and audio on his site, former Calvinist; has many books on Amazon, and his Handbook on Catholic Apologetics is pretty good Dave Armstrong's site Biblical Evidence of Catholicism has awesome e-books and good price. Dr Hahn's Catholic Faith and Apologetics
  5. Grammar I from the CLAA: Overview Grammar I course There is a Common School coming on the CLAA, with weekly plans.
  6. We used only Year 3 for one year. Too many changes required (history, philosophy and church history) to use it as a Catholic family.
  7. From the Polish/European perspective :-) St. Stanislaus, bishop St. Maximilian Kolbe St. Stanislaus Kostka St. Edith Stein St. Faustyna St. Francis St. Dominic St. Thomas Aquinas St. Augustine St. John of the Cross St. Theresa of Avila St. Therese of Lisieux
  8. Which Church? :-) There was only one. Don't be afraid to name it. :-)
  9. Forever, even if you separate or divorce in a civil court. Protestants allow for divorce and remarriage, but it was Moses' law, not God's that permitted separation. The inadmissibility of absolute divorce was ordained by Christ Himself according to the testimony of the Apostles and Evangelists: "Whoever shall put away his wife and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if the wife shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery" (Mark 10:11, 12 — Cf. Matthew 19:9; Luke 16:18). In like manner, St. Paul: "To them that are married, not I but the Lord commandeth, that the wife depart not from her husband. And if she depart, she remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband. And let not the husband put away his wife" (1 Corinthians 7:10, 11). In these words Christ restored the original indissolubility of marriage as it had been ordained by God in the Creation and was grounded in human nature. This is expressly stated by Him against the Pharisees, who put forward the separation allowed by Moses (not by God)"Moses by reason of hardness of your heart permitted you to put away your wives": but from the beginning it was not so" (Matthew 19:8); "He who made man from the beginning, made them male and female. And he said: For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they two shall be in one flesh. Therefore now they are not two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder" (Matthew 19:4-6). The indissolubility of all marriage, not merely of Christian marriage, is here affirmed. (catholic Encyclopedia)
  10. I've read it some time ago and it is very helpful to come back to it again and again. For those who don't know, father John Bosco (don Bosco) was a Catholic priest who gave himself to educating poor and orphans. HOW TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR STUDIES has the whole text, below I post only short points: 1. The first means for studying well is to have fear of God. 2. The second means for studying advantageously consists in not losing even a second of time. 3. The third means for success in studies consists in getting used to not going on in any subject, be it one grammar rule to another or one argument to another, without knowing the previous material well. 4. The fourth means for studying advantageously consists of eating in an orderly and timely fashion. 5. The fifth means for getting ahead in studies is to keep company with studious young men. 6. The sixth means is an orderly recreation. 7. The seventh means for studying profitably is this: attack and overcome all difficulties you encounter in your subjects of study. 8. The eighth means to study beneficially consists of dedicating yourself exclusively to studying the subjects of your course.
  11. Well, while St. Nicholas was walking on earth, there was only One, Catholic, Apostolic and Holy Church. :-) But we gladly share with anyone who wants to learn from the saints. :-) Blessings
  12. It doesn't, bc he was a Catholic bishop, so anything that is not connected with His real story is a fairy tale or dumbed down version leading to Father Frost and Santa versions. :-) Here is a good website for kids about St. Nicholas
  13. This will be easy :-) From the CLAA: Grammar/Latin: finishing Grammar I and starting Grammar II Math: Arithmetic Bible: continuing Catechism & Scripture Catechism and starting 7 year Biblical Studies with this year's Pentateuch Writing: Sola Scriptorum (Writer's School) - Narration and Figures of Speech Vocabulary: Classical Vocabulary I History: World Chronology I Geography: cont. 14. "Catholic Christianity" is great. It would depend on your 13-year old maturity, but we just got it from the library and I want to buy it now!
  15. Online Baltimore Catechism at the CLAA that has lots of memory work and great explanation and Scripture Catechism course that explains how we got the Bible. Both self paced, solid info, no fluff, online text and exams. We love it.
  16. The best and simplest explanation I've heard in a long time about finding the truth about the truth :-) is a lecture by Peter Kreeft, famous author and prof at Boston College Divine Truth—The Heart's Deepest Longing Explores the nature of self, subjective truth, objective truth and Christ as the Truth P.S. If there would be more than one truth, there wouldn't be One God.
  17. Both, and they are really so close, there is no need to separate and make a big deal out if it at all.
  18. Just to let you know.... any anti-Catholic book is already debunked... it's just matter of googling it :-) There has to be one truth. Otherwise, there is no God.
  19. In the past I was very eclectic (Singapore Math, SOTW, Apologia, TOG, plus tons of other stuff including trying Charlotte Mason approach), now we are using predominantly CLAA. I was looking for a "logic-centered" classical liberal arts curriculum, with Catholic faith being a source and foundation, that was my quest.
  20. We are using it as an online course at the CLAA. It's great!
