  1. I'd be biting my tongue, but I'd leave it alone.
  2. It's been a frustrating year for us. My dd's first meet isn't until January, but I'm not sure she's going to be ready. Bars has always been a challenge for her, and now for L7 she is having more struggles (giants.) Then when she wasn't getting them, her coach would give her rope climbs, which in turn ripped up her hands more, making bars harder. One day he even sent her home. I do understand that he was trying to find a way to motivate her, but that type doesn't work for her, even if it works for others. But she still loves gym and wants to stay and overcome. I do admire her for that!
  3. What was the context of the conversation? I can see where they're talking morality and such, but I'm not seeing how this is partisan.
  4. I know Bart Ehrman is the man who lost his faith--I wonder if the others mentioned are also without a faith tradition? Just curious, as I like to know where people are coming from :001_smile:
  5. Agree! I love reading/studying/memorizing Scripture now more than ever. My earlier point being, there are obscure passages and hard topics in the Bible that many theologians and great thinkers have wrestled with over the ages, and I'm not likely going to have any more clarity than they, and I'm OK with it.
  6. Yes! I agree with Origen. That's why, imo, while Scripture is inspired and holy and God-breathed, I can't get too hung up on things that appear to be inconsistent, hard to understand or don't make sense. Simply put, human words can't contain the awesomeness of God.
  7. I LOVE this topic. I'm particularly interested in the use of Septuagint vs the Masoretic text. Following...
  8. I'm not T. Wells, but I have a few traditions (not necessarily from your church in particular, since I don't know which church you belong to) that I wonder about: *grape juice and crackers for communion *format of services: (I mentioned this above) praise songs, worship songs, announcements, collection, sermon, altar call *the sinner's prayer Those are just a few things that gave me pause many years ago, and aren't necessarily directly from Luther, Calvin, etc.
  9. Random thoughts on Tradition and tradition (not directed at anyone in particular!) I don't see Tradition and Scripture in contradiction, I see them supporting one another. Yes, there are parts of Tradition that are not explicitly laid out in the Bible, but that is true for traditions found in all churches. For example--taken from churches I've attended in the past--3 or 4 praise songs, 2 or 3 worship songs, announcements, offering, sermon, altar call with the sinner's prayer (also not in the Bible.) Even churches that "don't have a tradition," well, that's a tradition too! The question is...which traditions will I choose to follow, and where did they originate? Fascinating discussion!
  10. Many parts of the Bible came from oral tradition before they were written down :001_smile:
  11. As for finding humility and realizing "I'm not the ultimate authority" -- I have found the same thing. It would be arrogant for me (speaking for myself) to think I could, even with God's help, find all the answers on my own. BTDT. To lose confidence in myself is to find more confidence in Christ, and yes, in His Church. To gain humility is a GOOD thing. :thumbup1:
  12. The problem with interpreting Scripture on our own is that as modern-day Christians, we do not have the advantage of context that the early Christians had. We are so removed from their culture and time, that we can't rightly understand Scripture the way it was intended simply by ourselves. Phrases, idioms, etc aren't something we'll be familiar with unless we have "help," so to speak. If it was as simple as the Holy Spirit guiding each person into the truth, we wouldn't have 2398746329 denominations. I used to read commentaries on Scripture by contemporary authors, and eventually I wondered why I wasn't reading commentary by people who were part of the culture and time (early Church fathers.) Another point to keep in mind is God condescends to be described in human language so we might have a shot at knowing Him. But let's get real about this: as vast and amazing as the Bible is (and I spend MUCH of my time reading and studying), human words cannot contain the sheer awesomeness of God, Creator of the universe.
  13. We do Lively Latin without all the extra fluff, and for us it moves along at a decent clip.
  14. As long as you're coming to AZ--you'll be about 90 minutes from Sedona. Sedona is a CAN'T miss!
  15. It never occurred to me that a collision was worth mentioning. Was someone injured? I can't even count how many times my daughter was on the ground today, or any day that she plays.
  16. ToG is quite in-depth, imo. Because my kids are grammar stage, I haven't even gotten the full use out of the program. At this point we do the reading, maps, do sections on the people/vocabulary, the reading worksheets and the lapbooks. The discussion questions for dialectic and rhetoric stage cover SO much ground---I can hardly wait to get to them :D
  17. Did you use the Writing Aids book? It's a separate book that has thorough instructions for each type of writing assignment. I've found it useful and hope to get more use as the kidlets grow. Right now we're focusing on basic report writing before we jump into other areas.
  18. 5-5.5 hours of concentrated schoolwork. We do most subjects, most days unless something comes up--which seems to happen fairly often around here.
  19. I'd kind of like to know too!
