Economics - the high school kind
OLG replied to momofkhm's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Heading for econ is usually 'social science' or 'other'. Will you be starting with macroeconomics or microeconomics? What book will you be using - I think that would impact whether or not a sophomore could handle it. If sophomore has enough math and understanding of graphs, then go for it! -
iBooks 2 and iBooks Author now available!

Best help in raising SAT math scores
OLG replied to jeri's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
You probably already do this but consistent use of the daily SAT question along with working a math section from the Official SAT book of practice tests (and then reviewing why she got wrong the ones she did either with you or Khan Academy are sure fire ways. Daily work is the key. If you can find it, Rocket Revolution is a good source for the 'tricks' as well as Math for the Clueless (good even for a strong math person). We got our son's scores up to a perfect score using these ways. He loved Rocker Revolution and hated doing parts of a test daily but sometimes they just have to do it. Good luck! -
My family of origin was extremely sensitive to emotions and caring. My dh and his, are just like yours! Living with a 180 degree difference is very challenging. He grew up learning to back off and wait for anyone to 'recover' and doesn't know how to do anything else. His parents' parents were the same way. Hard to 'unlearn' behavior and especially difficult to create a caring and loving person coming from this background. Reach out to others instead.:grouphug:

s/o Christians have to do X to get to heaven?
OLG replied to Caribbean Queen's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Well said, FathertoPearl! -
They grow up so, so quickly and before you can blink, poof, they are gone. Seize the opportunity to be with your son these last few years. IT's worth it! He will benefit from it too since you will provide him not only great schooling but you will cement that bond that needs to be there when he hits the blasted later teen years. You can always go back to work later, right?

OLG replied to nukeswife's topic in General Education Discussion Board
:grouphug: Prayers for you and your Dad. This is not easy even IF family were supportive and your dh was home. Don't hesitate to write it all out here. Best to share and lighten the load a bit. :grouphug: -
Which year of homeschooling is the hardest?
OLG replied to Mimm's topic in General Education Discussion Board
By far, whatever age they are when they begin the college application process is THE hardest simply because of all the blasted applications, Common App, financial mess etc. Very stressful time. -

WE used the course plans and 'excellent' quarterly exams from Kolbe. They might be a way to get into the grading offering but I am not sure since when we did it, we purchased a solutions manual - cannot do that any longer, I understand.

Kinetic Books? We were quite happy with this program and it doesn't require a textbook - all online - although one is available.

Your most radical frugal/simple living tips
OLG replied to Soror's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Suspect someone has mentioned this but I didn't read all of the replies... Our greatest saving with electricity came from switching the breaker for the washer/dryer and using those on/off switches for all appliances so that they are not drawing electricity when not in use. HUGE savings. Remember the furnace can be switched off too in the months you are not using it. -
 Love humor/joke threads!
