  1. Good for you! The sad thing is, many people would just go along with her. Financial literacy is pretty rare. Your exchange reminds me of when someone was trying to sell me whole life insurance. They couldn't tell me what would be paid out in various situations. The company had "calculations" for that and it would be determined at the time of payout. Ummm. . ..yeah, sign me up!
  2. Sorry about that! But somebody needs to balance out the all-natural free-range organic gluten-free vegan low-carb no-sugar dye-free talk around here. :tongue_smilie: (planning my next thread to be on deep fried twinkies. . . )
  3. I've always assumed it was "some more". Because after having one, you always want s'more. Edited to add from Wikipedia, just because I found it interesting! It is unknown whether the Girl Scouts were the first to make s'mores, but there appears to be no earlier claim to this snack. Although it is unknown when the name was shortened, recipes for "Some Mores" are in various Girl Scout publications until at least 1973
  4. Not wrong at all! I actually made scalloped potatoes tonight too! I told DH that a thread on these message boards made me crave them. :tongue_smilie:
  5. DH built a fire pit in the back yard several days ago. Daily, since then, DD12 has been asking to toast marshmallows. :D So, tonight, we built a small fire, let it burn down to coals, and toasted marshmallows. Yum! Here's my question: Does anyone really like S'mores? We like the toasted marshmallows and we'll eat the chocolate straight, but it isn't better to layer them together on a graham cracker. :bigear:
  6. I think it is like twin infants: hugely fun but exhausting until they get a little older.
  7. I'd ask for a bigger mark down but I'd still eat them. :D
  8. I'd worry that straight baking would result in dry hard shrimp. If so, feed them to DH. :tongue_smilie:
  9. When we fly, each person gets a backpack. That's it. It is very easy to do a load or two while you are gone, especially if the hotel has a laundry room. The last time I went on a business trip, I took a single carry on duffle bag and my laptop bag. I met a co-worker at the airport and she had one very large suitcase, one medium suitcase, a smaller carry on bag, and a large purse. While on our trip, she "ran out of clothes" and went shopping. We were gone just under a week.:confused:
  10. Part of the reason for wasted food is silly policies. Schools here require each student to take certain items and certain number of items on their tray. So, kids take what is required in addition to what they want and just toss the extra.
  11. Yep, I have a real "Peter Pan" on my hands. I joke that DH and I have to get behind her and push every step of the way towards independence. A few early clues for what we were in for: 1. As a toddler/pre-schooler, when other kids her age were insisting on picking out their own clothes and dressing themselves, DD would sit quietly on the edge of her bed waiting for a parent to come in and dress her. 2. A few months before her 10th birthday, DD burst into tears and exclaimed that 9 was the perfect age and she didn't want to get any older. Now she is almost 16 and is fighting learning to drive and grimaces whenever I start talking about her finding a paying job. Our overall plan includes babysteps and pushing/forcing. She already volunteers and if we can find a paying job, she will have to do that. It won't be optional. She is taking one course at the CC next semester. Again, that isn't her choice, it is us pushing. Next year, it will be 2 courses at the CC per semester. She has already made it clear that she does NOT want to move somewhere else to go to college. That is ok because we have our state flagship university within commuting distance. I've reassured her that we are not tossing her out at 18. She can stay at home and go to college. So, I guess it is a combination of pushing/forcing and reassurance.
  12. Do you have pets? Do they sleep in the bedroom/bed with you? I've got my fingers crossed that it is fleas. Poor baby! I hope you solve it soon.
  13. IMHO, it is better to keep renting than to buy and not be happy with your purchase.
  14. This happened to one of my DDs a few days after a vaccination, except that the raised hot red area was the diameter of a softball. We ended up at the children's ER on the advice of the nurse line (ped office was closed). It took hours and the advice we left with was to use cold packs and make her use the arm. It will get better faster if the arm is moved and used. I'm still grumpy that I didn't get that advice over the phone and save us all the time and trouble. :glare:
  15. I'm not really sure because kids are so different. How is his behavior outside of the temper fits? If he is well behaved when he is not having a melt down, I'd probably still consider it normal and just try to minimize the damage he can do to himself and your possessions during a tantrum.
  16. There's a few different places but a good free one is at http://www.easywdw.com My suggested place to get tickets also has one (http://www.undercovertourist.com)
  17. One day tickets are expensive and not really discounted. The price per day goes down dramatically with multi-day tickets. If you will be going for multiple days (and only mentioned the day you are doing Magic Kingdom), I highly recommend the online Undercover Tourist for tickets. Very reliable and a nice discount. Do NOT try to buy tickets on e-bay or from steetside kiosks in Orlando. They are not legal and you can end up having to buy all new tickets at the gate anyway. The evening party people will not significantly impact crowds in the park during the day until they start letting them into the park. Even though the official hours of the party start at 7:00, they let them in starting about 4:00, I believe. Crowd level 5 will be moderate crowds. The earlier you get to the park, the better. Usually, the first hour or two are wonderful before the sleepyheads start getting to the park. You will need a plan to make the most of your day and not wait in long lines. Know which attractions are musts and do the most popular and slowest loading ones first. Know how to use Fastpass. You will NOT do it all in one day so set your priorities.
  18. It'll help to get a second kitten for the first to play with. ;) Seriously, I'd be shocked if the older established cat accepted a newcomer without some initial hisses, growls, and swats. Keep an eye on them for a while and they will almost certainly get things worked out. I've got two older cats that were littermates and they STILL sometimes hiss, growl, and tumble. They get along the other 95% of the time.
  19. :iagree: It is something of a family joke here that DH and eldest DD can eat the messiest foods and not even need a napkin. Meanwhile, me and younger DD can eat a breadcrust and make a mess. It is not on purpose and I'm not using poor table manners.
  20. We did something similar to this except that we had DD label the countries in the continent from memory, then use a map to complete and correct what she had. She did the same continent every day until she was able to complete it correctly on her own. Then we moved to the next continent. We came up with this after I looked high and low for an age appropriate open-and-go workbook to supplement the other things we were using for world geography. I couldn't find anything that I liked.
  21. Where's the pictures! We like snakes. Last time I saw a snake in the yard the whole family came out and watched for a long time. It was just one, though, and didn't move much. I guessed it was a black snake.
  22. Definitely the Redwall series. Also, a more recent series called Warriors by the pseudonym Erin Hunter
  23. DD15 is pleased with her score. It is one point higher than DH or I got on the ACT in the dark ages. :tongue_smilie: We received the scores in the mail today as well.
