  1. also posted on bilingual board Things with my adult ESL student have been going well. She is reading more fluently than she was and gaining confidence. The issue I am having now is with her being able to hear and distinguish between short vowel sounds. I have given her links to sticky ball and other good sites. However, she has a hard time hearing the differences between short vowels with very simple words even though she knows what the words mean. here is a recent example: Words missed: I said cot; she circled cut I said shut; she circled shot I said jot; she circled jut (2) I said hunk; she circled honk I said dock; she circled duck (2) I said mom, she wrote mum I said mop; she wrote mup pop and pup With dictation of a very simple primary phonics reader, she Wrote ran for run tab for tub hap for hop If you have suggestions on how to proceed please share. specifically I am talking about games, activities, visual clues, etc. I have already done context clues for each word. It does not seem to work.

  3. Wow! Thank you. Her native language does not use the Roman alphabet. It is Eritrean. She has been in the US for a while. I need to absorb all these wonderful posts. I loved this board when I was homeschooling, and love it now that I am tutoring. I will process these posts, and get back to all of you. Morning, your comment about staying away from homeschool type materials interests me. Our literacy center has a lot of incomplete sets of things, and is difficult to navigate. So if you have titles please share them. Right now, I am trying to build up my own resources. As I said, the first thing she really responded to was the Little House on the Prairie. This is something she actually enjoys and wanted to read... so we are going with that for reading practice, and listening/reading comprehension..
  4. Thank you Hunter! I am not teaching handwriting, as her handwriting is okay. She needs to learn punctuation and grammar, but handwriting is fine. I do not know if she knows cursive. Ame
  5. Thanks for the spelling correction. Debating between Sound Beginnings - Used this before.. Very user friendly... but geared towards younger children... and lessons are daily. All about Reading Alice Nine's Reading Program Riggs Teaching Reading at Home Which of these would be most suitable for ESL student meeting 2 to 3 times per week? Which is the least expensive? How do I coordinate the phonics part with the reading from Little House? I have been using other resources (worksheets) to help reinforce the phonograms. But I would like something that came with worksheet and practice. Thanks
  6. I have recently become a literacy volunteer. My student has had no phonics, and pronounces words randomly. She can sound out some words, but not others. She does not know spelling rules. She has issues with fluency. I do not know what her reading level is. Because I taught my kids with phonics, using a Spaulding based method, I am trying to do the same with her... I downloaded my own flashcards for the phonograms.. I also suggested that she listen to a book on tape, and try to read along... We picked Little House on the Prairie and she really likes it.. This book motivated her to try and read parts of the book outloud on her own... and her fluency was better than it had been. I am a bit over my head with all this. I am looking for a Spaulding based program that would be applicable for adults... and basically the literacy place I go to has very limited resources. I would like to buy this for my student, but not spend a ton of money. I want to coordinate phonics with reading and spelling and comprehension. Right now I am doing this, but it is time consuming, and I'd like something prepackaged.. Any feedback for me? Thanks
  7. Please redirect this if this is not the correct forum. Dear Bilingual Education Board, I am a former homeschooler with 2 kids in college. I have recently completed literacy volunteer training and have been assigned an ESL adult. I do not have a grade level or comprehensible assessment test for the student. I made certain observations during our session last night. As homeschool teacher, I was used to buying books as per grade level and ability of student. Since they were my children I knew pretty much where they were in most areas. I am not really sure if the grade level paradigm is one to use with an ESL student. There are very specific things this student needs to work on such as learning how to pronounce verb endings; understanding tenses; understanding parts of speech; being able to read fluently and silently... and reading comprehension. the student could write from dictation, but had spelling issues.. The student is not comfortable using the web or writing emails. It was very hard to me to be able to figure out where exactly to start with this student. If any of you know of good resources (books and or websites) for adult ESL learners, please share them with me. Thanks Ame E.
  8. My husband does a lot of studio art/painting and gets his clothes messy a lot when he paints. He is also a big guy. Would you recommend an industrial apron or a chefs apron for someone like him, so he does not get paint all over his shirts and pants? Thanks Ame E.
  9. that's me!! I love classical music but cannot read music. I have also posted this on the high school/self-education board. I would love a very simple course either teaching me to read music or to play basic piano. I need either a book or a course online... Does anyone have suggestions? Thanks

  11. we had a very similar experience last year, where DD picked (her current school) big university... then right before making her final decision (in April) she switched to wanting to go to smaller local school.... At first we felt okay, maybe smaller local school would be good for her, considering she was graduating a year ahead... etc.... but then we had more money come through for the big school she wanted, and it was a better school academically and had more opportunities for her...so finally last minute she went back to her original choice. Roller coaster ride is a good word for it.. Also, if she is in the position where she can once again visit the schools with the great piano departments offering her a lot of money, that will help... We visited our children's current schools multiple times before deciding... And meeting with the piano teachers... and looking at living situations..
  12. My husband got hired to teach a class of junior high/high school kids locally. He has used Bruce McIntyres book... but I am looking for other books to expand his repertoire. He does not use Mona Brookes' books.. Can you post resources you like? I realize this is a homeschooling forum, but everyone always has great suggestions in terms of curriculum.. and books... Looking for something relatively inexpensive for beginners... and focusing on drawing/charcoal/colored pencil... Thanks
