  1. The blister on the gum line that bursts and then comes back sounds like a tooth abscess to me. Antibiotics should clear up something like that though. The bumps under the mouth. I don't understand the location. Just under the lips or on the chin? We had pets with chin bumps and were told it was a contact allergy. We changed their bowls from plastic to ceramic and applied witch hazel occasionally to the chin and it cleared up. Sorry! I hope you find the problem soon. It wouldn't hurt to switch to a low allergy food for a while and see if that helps.
  2. I really think something like this should be discussed first in person and then followed up with a written proposal/memo. Since it went in the mail today, I'd be sure to discuss it at work tomorrow. I don't think getting a piece of paper should be the first they hear of the request. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
  3. Does the system think you are an employee because of you having the same name as an employee or is it matching with a social security number? If the first, just enter a slight variation of your name. Part of the background check questions will ask if you go by any other names, use your full legal name there. If the second, I'd be more concerned about someone else falsely or mistakenly using your SS#!
  4. We LOVED our family vacation in Chicago. We stayed downtown and took public transit everywhere. Very convenient but it can be very crowded. Will you be alone with all 4 boys? I'd be very careful at not getting separated as you get on and off buses and the L. There are a couple competing pizza places that folks will recommend in Chicago. Depending on how long you will be there, you might want to try them both: Lou Malnati's and Giordano's. Lots of amazing museums and other sites to visit. We stayed a week and barely made a dent. We visited the Museum of Science and Industry our last day and could have easily spent another day (or two) there. We also hit the downtown aquarium - very nice. My main tip, learn from our mistake and use the recommended routes for public transit. The hotel and visitor center provided recommended public transit routes to take to get to all the common tourist destinations. By the end of the week, we got cocky and decided we could map out a more efficient route. The problem turned out that we did not really know the area and ended up getting off a bus in a depressed neighborhood. We walked a couple blocks to pick up our next bus route. It ended up fine but it was a risk we shouldn't have taken with young children in tow. Yes, we got to the museum a little faster but I would stick with the official recommendations!
  5. Yeah, it sounds like the trick will be in making easy to grab snacks available to him. Otherwise, he'll decide it is "too much trouble" to actually prepare a snack. Buy large tubs of yogurt and divide them up into smaller snack-size containers (adding fruit or other topping of his choice)? Nuts can get expensive but are a very convenient, nutrient dense, snack. Deviled eggs. You can cook a dozen at a time and have them ready to go in the fridge. Not very economical but if actually slicing cheese from a larger block is too much effort, the Baby Bel cheeses are convenient. Doesn't sound like your son needs to be low carb so I'd also look at making fully cooked containers of steel cut oats ready. He can heat for a few seconds in the microwave. Homemade granola. Frozen fruit smoothies.
  6. I agree completely. DD applied for every on campus student job that showed up on their system last year. She interviewed for a couple of them but wasn't offered a position. It's a small campus and I suspect they prefer to give the few jobs to students with more financial need. I did encourage her to let each of her instructors know that she was interested in a campus job but she did not follow up on that brilliant advice. True. Short sighted in my opinion, but what do I know. Exactly. The stress was getting to be too much for DD. She liked the job fine, but dreaded the continuing battle about her scheduled hours. Amazing! DD's job is at Kroger. Not an isolated management philosophy, I guess. DD is 19 so I was really pushing for her to handle things herself. I did call in for her once when she was genuinely sick because the supervisor was known for insisting that co-workers come in anyway when they were sick. They worked at the DELI! Ugh. Sounds like a health violation to me. Anyway, he didn't even try to pull any nonsense like that on me which tells me they take advantage of the young/desperate when they can. Exactly. DD's co-workers who have been there longer say she isn't the first college student to be driven away by the scheduling nonsense. DD has an 8-hour shift today. They are having a "taste of Italy" theme this week and have colorful hats and aprons for employees who will wear them, which is few according to DD. She is going to have fun with it for her last few shifts.
  7. I made my DD quit her job today. She worked so hard at the end of spring term to find a summer job. She finally got one and was very upfront about being a college student and having limited hours available once the school term started back. Well, they continue to be short handed and kept scheduling her for too many hours, not giving her the one weekend day off per week she requested to study, and even scheduling her during class time. DD was really stressing over getting her coursework completed to her normal standards and no matter how many times I told her that her studies come first, she couldn't bring herself to let her co-workers and supervisor down. So, the job had to go. She had the conversation with her supervisor today and will finish out the next week. Her last day will be next Saturday. She is already feeling calmer, currently curled up on the sofa with a textbook, sharing tidbits of art history with other family members.
  8. Thank you for posting the article. DD19 is studying computer science. It's great to see that the top-tier schools have such a high percentage of women in these majors. However, it doesn't hold true for other schools. The article also states: In 2015, about 20 percent of bachelor’s degrees in engineering and 16 percent of those in computer science went to women, according to federal data. Those shares were each up two percentage points compared with five years earlier. At that rate, it could take decades to reach parity.
  9. Yes, that is how languages evolve over time. However it does not stop people from looking ignorant in the meantime.
  10. you are actually talking about a two-wheeled personal transportation technology. Even then, it would be Segway. I have seen segway used for segue twice in two days by two different people on another forum. It is a new one for me!
  11. I am definitely making this once I get all the ingredients!
  12. No. That is ridiculous. For something acute like a UTI or ear infection, I use a clinic in a drugstore like Walgreen's. I have had good luck making same day appointments online so no phone wait times. I can usually get same week or next week appts with my GP or GYN for any issues. Preventative checkups can be a couple weeks out.
  13. DD would love this. There seems to be several variations on All Recipes. Can you post or link the actual recipe you use?
  14. DD did Cover Story, OYAN, and is now working on the second OYAN volume (science fiction). Writing seems to be a passion of hers and she spends quite a few hours on writing and participating in the online OYAN forums. She is making slower progress on her science fiction novel because she keeps going off on side trips, writing short stories and such. I guess it is all part of the creative process. I'm letting her lead in this area but will insist on working through Jensen's Format Writing next semester to be sure she is ready for dual enrolling in Freshman Composition her senior year. We haven't looked into other video-based writing courses so I can't speak to that.
  15. DD started her second official year at the CC (also dual enrolled at the same school) and will be ready to transfer to the state university in January. She is enjoying showing her little sister around campus, who just started dual enrollment, but is a bit overwhelmed at juggling her job hours with coursework. It's an off-campus job and they are scheduling her for more hours than she wants to work. I've told her that I'll support her if she decides to put her employment on inactive status (so she can jump right back in during school breaks) or even quit. She won't be able to work at this same location once she transfers anyway and the pay is so low it is for work experience more than money. I'm hoping next summer she will be able to find something more in line with her major. She likes her instructors, loves one that she had last semester too, and is pleased that she only has to write one paper this semester since most of her classes are math/technical in nature. The campus already hosted a student club day with booths to showcase all the activities that students could join. The one DD enjoyed most last year is still looking for a new faculty sponsor so who knows if it will be active or not. I told DD to ask her favorite instructor if he would be willing to act as the faculty sponsor, since it seems right up his alley, but since DD is not in a club leadership role, she is not comfortable even asking about his interest. Biggest campus activities seem to currently be hanging out in hammocks and playing Pokemon Go.
  16. Wow. Thanks for the all the tips and resources. Still sounds like significant work. It really shouldn't be this difficult. Not even sure we have a Nordstrom but I'll check. Otherwise, I'll research the suggested websites to get a good set of home measurements and look for a good return policy for online ordering. DD is wanting a few regular bras, not sports bras. She's been happy enough with the inexpensive Champion brand for sports bras.
  17. DD16 has used Champion sports bras for the last couple of years and has recently asked to shop for a few regular bras without the racer back. We took a couple quick measurements and hit a near-by store. The smallest band size the store carried was too large and the largest cup size offered in that band size was too small. So, where would you shop for a teen with measurements of 29" around the chest and 35" around the bust.
  18. Ask at the biopsy appointment when you will get the results. Usually it is within a day or two. Also ask if they will call you directly or send results to your primary doctor. That can delay when you are notified. I will be thinking about you.
  19. That is GREAT! I even shared it with DH.
  20. My recommendation would be the creme brulee at Wolfgang Puck Express. It is walk in, no reservations needed, and oh so yummy. The cheesecake is also good. Either could easily be split between two people.
  21. Also, not all breast cancer develops in "lumps". Be glad they are being diligent with follow up. I'm sorry for the extra stress and hope/expect you will receive benign results.
  22. I do not live in an area that has suffered a recent natural disaster. A neighbor we do not know well stopped by on Friday to give us a big box of bagels and cream cheese left over from a work meeting (I don't do the carbs but DH and DDs are loving them). Another neighbor gratefully and graciously accepted our offer of an overabundance of okra. It was cool enough this morning that I completed my walking goal without getting hot and miserable. I think I've found a wildlife expert who can help us with our bat residents in a humane way. This is good! I could keep going. Great thread.
  23. Is it an active job or a sedentary job? It sounds counter-intuitive, but exercise will help you feel less tired in the long run if the job has you sitting most of the day, like mine does! I'd also focus on eating as well as you can and getting plenty of sleep. If the exhaustion persists, consider a check up and blood test to see if you are anemic or have any deficiencies (vit D is a common one). I'm so sorry you are feeling so tired and hope you adjust to your new routine very soon.
  24. I have an irrational aversion to matching socks. Yet, whenever I open my sock drawer, there are rows of neatly paired and folded socks for me to use. I consider this magic sock drawer to be an expression of the love DH has for me. It's a small thing, in the realm of all things, but it is meaningful to me. I'd love to hear some little things that loved ones do for you OR little things that you do for your loved ones. Not the big tasks that are part of our daily grind like dishes, laundry, yard work, etc., but little things, like maybe you will cheerfully do laundry but cleaning out the filter squigs you out so a loved one always wipes the filter clean. I have a DD like this.
  25. DD will be transferring from the community college to a state university for spring 2017. Yes, it is awkward timing and can impact eligibility for scholarships, or even if you are technically still eligible, it is already given to fall start students. DD can not take a semester break because the state scholarships that she is eligible for and already receiving require continuous attendance (summers are an exception). We COULD have her continue taking courses at the CC for another semester but none of them would transfer. What bugs me more, she is following a specific transfer plan at the community college for the university. Because this particular transfer plan is not designed to earn an associates degree before transferring, she is automatically NOT eligible for the university transfer scholarship. I'm not happy about this because the university designed the transfer plan AND set the rules for the transfer scholarship. Knowing what we know now, we are planning for our second DD to spend two full years at the community college, earn an associates degree, and then transfer somewhere for fall.
