  1. I used them with the matching set of Teaching Guides published by Oxford University Press. Using the Teaching Guides allowed me to use History of US even in high school with my learning challenged dd.
  2. Did you try their site map? That usually works for me.:)
  3. Nope. Both of mine were homeschooled since they were babies. Dd#1, my introvert, lives home, her private college is 10 min away, she's in their Honors Program and just started her second year there. She works part-time on campus and has made several nice friends. Dd#2, who is bipolar, just graduated from high school and completed her first semester of college and she works part-time. She's continuing at community college to get her Assoc. Degree before heading to 4-yr univ here in town. This kid REALLY loves being away from her parents as much as possible. Just her personality. I don't think my kids are clingy and tied to me???:001_unsure:
  4. I bought my used text and the ans key from: http://www.emmanuelbooks.com
  5. The one I purchased for me to use and carry around with me, looks like an old, tan, leather book only there's no magnetic strip. I know what you mean... saw some at B&N with the strip. Mine has a thin flat leather strap that winds a couple times around the book and you can tuck the end underneath to keep it wound. Maybe next time I buy one I'll try one with the strip. Thanks.
  6. Nicole and Carol, Yes, your posts help. That's what I'm wanting-- ideas on ways to do it and even thoughts on the pros and cons of the different types of books available for journaling. I need for ours to be in a book format, not on computer. And they need to be smallish-- 5x7, roughly. To use with my college kids, I just bought 2 books and both of them are 5x7 spiral-bounds, with hard front/back covers. I really don't know if the other types of bindings are better or not. To use with my dh, I have a sewn book. And then my smallest book is a small leather one and only I write in it. Also, where do you find the largest selection of books? I love having choices when I purchase a book for journaling. Most of mine were purchased at Barnes & Noble. Is there a better place for choices?
  7. Thank you, Classic Mom. I'm going to bookmark your link so I can easily refer back to it. I'm looking for ideas/methods in how to journal with three individual family members, 2 college kids & dh, so that in each of the three book I'll be journaling back and forth with that one person. If you or anyone else have ideas to make this work, I'm all ears. Again, thanks.
  8. Thank you for replying, Erin. I forgot to ask this-- Do you begin each entry at the top of a page or do you just leave 2-3 blank lines at the end of the previous entry and then and begin your new one? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  9. This is for college kids and adults doing journal writing... not on the computer. Do you write on both sides of each 2-page layout or do you only write on the right hand side? And what type of heading to you write before each entry? Thanks.

  11. And I totally believe you. It was what they told you that I cannot believe. I agree, I also think it was flattery.
  12. I just read this again. That cannot be true. My youngest dd received her letter from them within the last few months. I did not nominate her and she did not take any college entrance exam.
  13. When each of my girls received letters from them, the only way that I could see where they got my girls' names was possibly through their applications for college because, clearly, my kids didn't do anything publicly that was so significant to warrant any special recognition from an elite group. They seem to be a genuine group who enjoy taking kids on trips for those who can afford to pay but as for the invitations signifying nomination, honor or recognition-- I doubt it, I seriously doubt it.
  14. Both my girls got invites but we were of the impression that they invite everyone and those with money, sign up; we didn't.
  15. I can only answer for Human Odyssey. We only used the student text and the TE for it. Those two books contained more than enough study material in them.
  16. Is your dd just reading it or is she also doing the assignments? I didn't think anyone could do all the assignments that quickly unless maybe that's all they do during the two weeks.
  17. We went the "Word History" route. While in high school, dd#1 read her Spielvogel World History "for fun". It's one of her few treasured high school books. Dd#2 did the same thing with her Spielvogel World History text: The Human Odyssey. The man is an engaging writer.
  18. Dd#2, who just graduated, did dual enrollment throughout her senior year. Fall of '07, we had her pick her first 2 CC classes. She chose English Comp and Intro Theater. In Jan '08 she took Intermediate Algebra and an aerobics class. Currently, she's taking Public Speaking. By the end of summer she will have completed her first semester of college. In September she will be attending CC as a regular college student taking Spanish I, American Government, Psychology. She works part-time during school semesters and is bipolar. Her academic advisor suggested and we agreed, that she only do 3 classes this fall to gradually get her feet wet with full-time college. Depending on how that goes, we'll decide if she will take 3 or 4 classes for the following semester. This dd is leaning towards getting a 4-year degree before possibly working as a personal (exercise) trainer and she wants to have extra emphasis/study on public speaking while in college.
  19. Dd#2 just graduated from high school and this summer is finishing first semester at CC. Just last week her new Dell laptop [w/Vista] was shipped. She helped her dad do the research and she paid for the entire thing herself with her saved work money. It was around $600 w/case included. Don't ask me the exact name of her pc because I don't know and she's at work now so I can't ask her. I really don't know what the advantages are for buying a MAC. [Maybe someone can explain?] I'll be mostly lurking in this thread because I hope to get myself a laptop by the end of this month and I know nothing about choosing laptops. About Vista--- Recently I was told by my computer savvy dd#1 who works on computers at her college job... that since Vista first came out around 2007(?) it has been "significantly renovated"... her words. Like many new products on the market, it was probably first produced before it was ready to "meet the public";). Now I'll return into Lurkdom.:leaving:
  20. Same with dd's college. Graduating with honors means honors program. And yes, I get it that honors program is different than honors society.
  21. We lived on three acres for five years and thought it would be our "forever home". Not!!! It was all I needed to get the country out of the burb girl. Now we are living in a city while slowly making our way back to the burbs but no more country for this gal. There is one thing to consider for those who dream about life in the country. If your kids are almost college age and you plan for them to attend college while living home, country living isn't the easiest way to do it. With us living in the city now, dd#1 is attending college ten minutes from home while living home so she has no cost for a dorm room. She works on campus, too, so both school and job are ten minutes away. Dd#2 goes to community college which is a 15-20 min drive from here, depending on traffic. Her job is a 15 min drive from home. We've decided that we do not like long commutes. While living in the country, dh's job was 1 1/2 hrs from home and church was a 1 hr drive. So when we move to the burbs, we will look for a location that is close to church, close to dh's job and close to both dd's schools. And btw, I could be very happy living in a beach condo.;)
  22. Sabrina, If you ask my dd who was in her college Honors Program all last year she'd tell you "no". All joking aside, she's still in Honors and plans to stay in it at least throughout her 2nd year of college. She hates all the extra work and each semester last year, she spoke with her academic advisor about whether or not she should stay in it... if it was worth it. Each semester, her advisor challenged her to stick it out so she did. [she respects her academic advisor, who was her Poli-Sci proff. Dd's majoring in Poli-Sci.] Deep down, dd knows it will look better on her resume and she is capable of doing the extra work. She has practically cried to me about it and I finally told her, "If it's going to make you miserable, step down from Honors. Otherwise, try to stay with it." Last I spoke with her about it, she's planning to continue in Honors this fall. And there you have it.
  23. Christine, It sounds like you're leaning towards "whole books" vs. anthology and I understand that. However, have you considered purchasing a used copy of something on the order of Prentice Hall(PH) World Lit to use as a guideline? Especially since you mentioned not being well acquainted with World Lit yourself... it wouldn't be a bad idea to use a good anthology for your course. This would offer you a 1-year chronological sweep of World Lit plus excellent study notes/questions. The text we enjoyed is entitled: "PH Literature World Masterpieces". You could cover LWM in one or two years. If doing it in one year, then for the second year you could pick and choose from their detailed "Table of Contents", a number of selected works from each time frame that you and/or your student found to be engaging and necessary to read in its entirety. In both TWTM and TWEM, SWB offers guidelines for doing literary analysis when reading whole books. This is what PH Lit World Masterpieces offers: It's secular yet it includes classic religious works. It covers both east and western lit. (We studied both east and west lit and history in high school.) It includes the poetry of World Lit. It is written in chronological order. Student text has excellent, built-in study questions and TE contains most of the answers. Many questions in this text can be used as launching pads for extensive essay writing. It is designed where you could cover it in either 1 or 2 years, your choice.
