  1. DH is union, but it's a pilot union so I am not sure how alike they are. DH's union makes sure the company keeps to the contract, which they often try not to do. They negotiate the contract on behalf of the pilots. They do listen to the pilots and do what the majority wants. They have legal representation, medical benefits, they help pilots who need it financially. The union takes care of us. If you have to pay anyway, why not? The union protects my husband's job.
  2. She was my husband's ped :) We have her book here that my MIL gave me when I was pregnant with our first.
  3. Hopefully you will all teach your children that the color of your skin doesn't matter. The clothes you wear don't matter, nor does your hair. What matters is how you behave and treat others. I teach my children that all people all equal and deserve kindness. I am white and I have no clue what is is to be black, but I know that I am not scared of a young black man walking down my street. I would never teach my kids that they are scary to others. If someone is scared of them that is their problem not my children's. You are all making me very sad for my soon to be born nephew. His mom is white and his dad is black. Hopefully, we will teach this generation of children to be better than the neighborhood watch killer.
  4. I'm in West Cobb. I do plan on using Westridge (the school you linked) for our kids. I have been there a few times before. Cara, the admin, is a very nice lady. I believe that you can do everything without ever going there. There's another one close to me as well. It's Trinity Homeschool Depot. They have a website you can google. We plan on duel enrolling our kids at 16. They want to go to GA Tech and UGA right now. I don't want any surprises. I want to make sure all of our bases are covered and that they will have no problems getting into the schools they want. That's why we will go accredited. The kids will also get the benefit of prom, student council, etc at Westridge.
  5. I don't think it's a skinny thing. All 3 of mine are competitive swimmers. The youngest is 7 and is 44 lbs. He is a great swimmer. He is also super muscular. He has a six pack! He can not stay warm and hates getting cold. Practice is a struggle, but he loves to compete! Maybe your son just needs to work on his core strength.
  6. We are going in May. We are staying at the Pohawtan Resort. We got a great deal on vrbo.com. I will check out the triangle pass. I hadn't heard of it before.
  7. Yes, he skipped pre-algebra. When I was looking at the content of the pre-algebra book, it seemed to be a lot like the 7th grade book. I gave him the placement test and he placed into Alg 1. He currently has a high B in it, so it's going well. He just gets math. Any mistakes he makes are usually from silly mistakes, not that he doesn't get it.
  8. My daughter is 9. She has no concern for boys. Her best friend however is public schooled and her mom bought a boy a valentines gift! The mom "complained" that she was too young for this. Of course she is but the mom is condoning it! The girls in my daughter's girl scout troop are the same way. It is definitely the socialization they get at school that causes this behavior.
  9. My son is 12, so 6th grade. He is using TT Algebra 1 right now. He started last year with TT7 after we switched from Singapore.
  10. My husband is having the same issue, but he runs long distance. We aren't sure what it is. I googled and couldn't find much. He has a marathon in March and we are waiting until after it to go to the Dr. Not smart, but he wants to run his race. Maybe someone knows what it is.
  11. We use CAT and we order it from http://www.familylearning.org/
  12. Thanks Debbie and everyone else. I just pulled out our wedding albums and had a good cry. My step-grandmother did all the flowers for our wedding. We got married at their home. There's a picture of us and all of our grandparents. I am so thankful that I have it.
  13. I just need to get this out. I can't post on facebook since I don't want to upset anyone. My mother's mother and my step-father's mother died this week. I drove 7 hours one way on Thursday, attended my grandmother's funeral on Friday and drove back home. My step-grandmother's funeral is today. I am emotionally spent. My mom is taking it really hard, as she should be. It's a lot to ask anyone to deal with. It's a very stressful time for our family. Talking about it helps, just to put it out there, so thanks for reading.
  14. We won't allow our children to have accounts until they are 13 as well. I'm big on rules. My kids don't even ask.
  15. We don't vaccinate and I will not intentionally make my child sick. I would not do well with seeing him sick by my doing. If they catch it then we will deal with it.
  16. I forgot, DH did work in another state when our oldest was an infant. We didn't have much money for traveling back and forth so it was pretty horrible. We survived but it was the worst time as a family unit. I believe it lasted 3 months or so. Not something I would ever want to do again, but it was necessary to his career.
  17. DH travels for work as he is a pilot. 4 day trips are fine, but anything else and we all go crazy. It's all what you are used to, I guess. If DH had to be away for work 4+ weeks we would go with him. He was once looking at a job in Vietnam for 12 months. We were planning to go with him. We turned it down since it didn't pay enough for us all to live there. We really do like each other and enjoy our time together. DH hates to be away as much as we don't like him being away. We have been together 18 years and married 13.
  18. DS, 12, wants to be a scientist. He wants to work on alternative energy. DD, 9, wants to be a vet and own a horse farm. DS, 7, doesn't know :)
  19. My daughter is a GS. I would rather not sell cookies, but she LOVES it. I figure if she wants to knock on every door in our neighborhood than I will walk with her. That's exactly what we did this year. She had a blast and we got to know a lot of our neighbors :)
  20. My DH ran his second half today. You weren't at Callaway Gardens today were you? Way to go on your accomplishment :)
  21. We started with TT7 last year with my then 5th grader. He is using TT Algebra 1 this year. He is advanced in math and he does learn a lot from this program. I don't have any bad things to say about it. My DD will use it next year for her 5th grade year. I don't think she will test into 7 as she doesn't love math. We use Singapore before TT. It works for us! Everyone has to find what works for them.
  22. Thanks for the uplifting post. My oldest didn't read until 4th grade and we use Teaching Textbooks :) DS is highly intelligent as he is taking Algebra 1 and a high school science class and doing well with it, at 12 years of age. When he was younger I would have never guessed he would be where he is today! It's great that homeschooling allows each child to develop on their own schedule!
  23. I sewed pants for them, but I was also able to find plenty of clothes to fit them from the store. There are plenty of work at home mama companies out there that sell cloth diaper pants.
  24. We are selling cookies right now. My daughter is 9. We do go out in our neighborhood. I go with her of course. My son is 12, looks 15. I would go with him as well. You just never know. If my kids want to face rejection after rejection and still keep going, then I will support them and walk with them. Of course, I would rather not sell anything and just pay for my daughter's activities, but they push these cookies and prizes on them.
  25. We have used life, chemistry and now earth science from Mr. Q. We like it!
