  1. 3x -6 is simplified. A polynomial is simplified if it doesn't have parentheses and like terms are combined.
  2. f(x) -f(2) (3x+2) - (3*2+2). I would write it as one expression using parentheses...not as separate ones. Now just simplify.... 3x+2-8 3x-6
  3. It's an emoticon for a smiley face with sunglasses. There's a check box to the right to enable emoticons? I wonder if turning it off will avoid that.... B) I've found the bar models in Singapore to be really cool.
  4. For comparison, the results summary (bottom right corner of page) will show how kids last year in different grade levels did through Duke. You might take a look at the practice items to get a better idea of what they mean by rhetorical skills... We got scores today as well. I'll be able to stop stalking the mail carrier :)
  5. What's NOEO? I couldn't find it on the abbreviation list?
  6. Weird. I was in off campus housing, but still housing that was connected to the university (UCSB). Dorms closed over Christmas break, but not over spring break (one week between quarters). I wouldn't have even thought of it as a concern!
  7. I wonder if part of the difference is that with someone with cancer, for instance, there's a hopefully clear plan for the fight. With addiction, there isn't a path...it's continued avoidance, one day at a time. A cancer recurrence isn't something you can control, but the choice to take a drink is. Even though addiction is a disease, it's one that I'd think should be able to be fought. Would you stay with someone with an illness they refused to treat?
  8. We still don't have ours, but I'm hearing that some people have been getting them in the mail this week. I'm hoping we get ours soon!
  9. Lots of hugs! On the bright side, you caught it before anything collapsed! (not much of a bright side). Hugs!
  10. There's also no HiG for 6A or B and no plans to make one. We're going to do the IP books and CWP for 6, but we won't be using the text or WB.
  11. There are a lot of crazies out there. Sure sounds like them & not you. :grouphug:
  12. If you're going to filibuster, that's the way to do it. None of this "We'll filibuster unless you give in!"
  13. I really like using manipulatives for learning concepts. With division, I found base 10 blocks to be excellent for showing the problem, then writing the steps. I'd back track for a while and review with manipulatives and lots more practice before testing. :grouphug:
  14. I know the boards are public, but I would prefer kids stay separate... different location entirely.
  15. :hurray: Asking in advance is always good. Demanding at any point is never good! And after the fact is just dumb. Yup... instructors see a LOT.
  16. From what you said in your first post, it sure sounds like it. Check out Hoagie's Gifted and read around on the Accelerated Learner board here. There's also a forum at Davidson that's useful. And it does sound like he's unhappy enough at school that I'd bring him home now. My son is an only and I'm a major introvert. We still get him around other kids regularly (park day with support group, homeschool classes around town... art museum, zoo, library book club, historical society). Good luck!
  17. At the Island level, I do think Sentence Island is useful for discussion of the terms. My son also really liked the story. I don't think Building Language added all that much. You can easily wait for Caesar's English (which has been really great here). The poetry is well done, but we kept on not getting to it. From Level 2, we didn't use poetry or much of Paragraph Town (although again, my son enjoys the story). And in Level 3, we haven't touched poetry or Essay Voyage. I do really like CE 1 and 2, so I would have missed out if we didn't use it. For level 1, I think we would have missed not having Sentence Island (again, story & reinforcement). We've mainly used WWE and now WWS for our writing, but CE for vocab & MCT Practice (Grammar and practice books) for grammar.
  18. No suggestions, but I wanted to say I'm thinking of you & your family. Lots of :grouphug:
  19. Bumping because we just had friends who almost had a drier fire tonight. Smoke alarm went off and there was a burning smell. They stopped the drier and found the line from the drier to the outside vent was pretty clogged. If the drier had been running while they weren't home it could have been a problem.
  20. Well, I need my avatar on the thread as well... My cat would throw up on the pillow next to me in bed. I didn't like that. Not a nice way to wake up.
  21. And I just deducted points from a student's test for this.
  22. FYI... our son didn't have an allergy to nuts. He had a dairy allergy. Until... he had the anaphylactic reaction to cashews. It was biphasic. We got yelled at for not calling an ambulance and driving him in to the ER ourselves. We were on the way to the ER because we were concerned based on what our son was saying... but there were no hives and it didn't present like any of his prior reactions. I ended up injecting him with the Epi on the drive. He'd had Benadryl and OraPred already. If we hadn't had the Epi with us, it could have gone very very very bad. Please, please, please carry the Epi with your son. Nut allergies can go fatal so fast.
