It depends on whether the elite schools will encourage or discourage their students to take the corresponding AP exam such Calculus AB. I think many of their humanities classes would not be general "survey" type classes such as APUSH. The public school mentioned, Scarsdale High, seemed to have the AP type content classes but were not AP designated in their catalog. I did not look at any of the private school catalogs. I agree with your comment about AP exam versus AP designated course in these type articles. From what I understand, the AP designated course thing is a relatively new CB "feature".

IMHO UC Scout would be good in this case (I think you are in CA). Try to procure it through school (maybe a charter) for the Basic $19 per semester (free if CA). I know DS' B&M had some issues getting it setup with the UC Scout folks. Previously DS and his classmates did the AP Physics teacher led option which was quite easy for the B&M charter to setup. The teacher led option is also cheaper for CA residents and is the easiest way but after paying for 2 semesters the value proposition might be to outsource it elsewhere. The final is proctored via the web using your webcam.

Is your student attending any classes at a B&M HS or is everything homeschool based (out-sourced or otherwise)? I would make sure that the CC understands what your situation is so you both are "on the same page" about what they are getting for a transcript. If the later why not just gin up an interim grade report half through this "fall" and try to use that to get in the Winter quarter.

[I was in the hospital when this was posted so sorry for the late reply just saw it today] Scarsdale High School is located in a very wealthy community and students from there can be just as snooty as the "boycott" private schools. To even think that other low-funded public schools could match them in course offerings would be crazy. The College Board provides the AP tests and guidelines for the material to cover. A public school could certainly create an AP class similar to a good college level entry course if the teacher and the students in the class are up to the task. It is a high stakes test and some cramming review during the last few weeks is fully expected. Most classes are over 30 weeks long. My sons Calculus AB certainly was good enough to replace the Calc 1 at his university. His Calculus BC class seemed a little light for Calc 2 so he is starting with that in college. IMHO AP is currently the best national cost efffective standard for public schools and just needs to keep on improving. Maybe more outside peer review than just academic types they list at CB. Dual Enrollment is so hit and miss based on the college attended which tend to be CCs to make it them affordable.

Can we ask how much they charge for that? DS' is about 14' deep and 12' wide (estimated from actual room photo with two XL beds) and paying $8k per year for half of that room! actual 17.5 x 11.5

Scientific calculators are very inexpensive - for example they don't allow graphing calculators for my son's college physics class tests so picked up a scientific calculator. See post above for example.

When it comes to hard copy school books - I am quite the hoarder - less so on the electronic: DVDs, etc -
https://www.insidehighered.com/digital-learning/article/2018/07/16/measuring-impact-oer-university-georgia From previous discussions here some of the OER text books such as "Calculus based Physics" aren't quite there yet. But at least some of the OpenStax are good enough.

8 top private DC high schools drop APs

Test optional this will be a great way for even more discrimination against hard working Asian-Americans - no quantitative evidence to subpoena such as what has started against Harvard. -

IMHO that is the primary strength of the AP program - drinking from the firehose can be delayed until college. Why is that part of the college experience important? I wanted my son to learn and be challenged with college level material. In that way AP was successful. He did not take the exam for all his classes. For those that he did take, I was happy to compare to the rest of the US. The AP exam is a high stakes pressure exam - one shot only but so were most college finals back in my day. Finals counted for a significant part of the grade 25-50 percent. Issues: AP courses should match similar courses at flagship state universities and colleges - not there yet they offer too many courses - start fixing what you have - make APUSH great recent additions like CS Principles are not college level and should be moved into their new Pre-AP lineup -
My nephew took a BYU HS Math class quite a while ago. More recently I tutored a student taking a BYU HS Math class. BYU instructor led does not mean you get the same kind of support you would get from a Derek Owens or similar course. The assignments get graded but I don't remember the student getting a lot of feedback. My gut feel is to say that they are very structured independent study courses where the student learns the material by reading the text and doing the assignments. The tests are reasonable as I remember. The courses are accredited.

Transfer consideration specifically for engineering
MarkT replied to workingmom's topic in The College Board
If he is proactive and gets to know the professors there are probably more opportunities that are available. At least do a semester before you give up. The top Engineering schools may not take any credits from DE classes taken in HS. Is the state school the best Engineering programs in that system? Getting in to top schools is a crap-shoot. I would probably try applying to different competitive schools than the "rejected" schools if possible. My gut feel finish at state school and then go to a good grad school since you are starting so young.
