  1. yes I agree with try before you buy (some are awful) if I had to pay. When I take a MOOC I can't see paying more than $20 or so because I tend to take them for refresh or some information, I have only fully completed 1 out of 5 I started. DS was 0 for 1 in HS (real school started back up so MOOC was abandoned). It did reel good to finish that course but I was in much better health when I took it. Some folks in the article supported "real" tuition charges probably in the hundreds of $ range.

  3. Is this new? I thought we had to pay for AP scores. Not sure what DS did when he took the exams this year and last.
  4. I also poked around looks like most of ElinorEverywhere threads are gone. If someone still has that syllabus they could post it here. found only this:
  5. Is there a particular math class such as College Algebra required for this degree - if so maybe consider doing that class over the whole year and try to place out of it at the college. For a BFA IMHO don't think taking math would be make or break unless you are applying to very competitive colleges.
  6. My son liked AP Macro more than AP Micro as well. He took both with a good teacher at a B&M Charter school. He chose to only take the AP Macro exam. Results in July.
  7. yeah some episodes are better than others but wait until your student gets Mr or Ms Boring in college - bring No-doz :)
  8. Which instructor? I like Wolfson but then again I am an Engineer so goofy isn't always needed - Wolfson has good presentation style. I have had so many boring STEM professors through my education college and post college that my bar is fairly low :)
  9. I think so - the prep book is for learning the question style etc - the student needs to know most of the material already - PM me I may have additional info good luck
  10. Is there a particular trunk or lock box that folks here would recommend? Size - trunk will need to fit under the bed I suppose. If too small then easy to swipe. It needs to be conspicuous.
  11. DS took US Govt and Macro AP exams - he thought he did OK find out in July
  12. Looks very challenging https://www.coursera.org/learn/discrete-mathematics Starts May 21
  13. As a part of my volunteer high school college counseling role, I borrowed this from our local library: The Enlightened College Applicant: A New Approach to the Search and Admissions Process. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/30152093-the-enlightened-college-applicant It is well researched and written. It has good college "value" discussions along with other topics. I recommend to borrow it or buy used. The text is targeted towards those applying selective to moderately selective universities and/or their honors colleges.
  14. 3 amazon reviews on the Conceptual Physics Teacher's Edition Teachers Guide Edition and all of them worthless oh well that's why we need this forum
  15. my friend has the answers book for the 2009 edition I will ask him the ISBN when I see him
  16. Would this be a review/refresh of Geometry for the student or first time? Are they behind because of planning or is it more "capability"?
  17. "Railroad workers are being offered signing bonuses of up to $25,000 to join BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Corp. as the freight railroads struggle to fill jobs in a historically tight labor market. BNSF and Union Pacific are hauling more products across the Western U.S., where their networks are based, and trying to ease congestion in areas with high demand. Freight volumes are rising on strong economic growth and industrial expansion, and a shortage of available truck capacity is pushing more shipments onto rails. At the same time, the unemployment rate has fallen to 4.1% in the U.S., and as low as 2.8% in some markets where railroads are hiring. In response, the companies are dangling incentives that analysts and union leaders say are the highest they can recall. Union Pacific is offering $10,000 to $20,000 “hiring incentives” to train crews in cities like Denver, Kansas City, Mo., and North Platte, Neb., where its largest rail yard is located. Those jobs average $40,000 in pay over the first year and $60,000 the next, according to job listings.Electricians to inspect, repair and maintain locomotives are being wooed with $25,000 signing bonuses to Union Pacific locations outside Milwaukee, in Hinkle, Ore., a three-hour drive from Portland, and elsewhere."

  19. looks organized - Goto Meeting works quite nicely https://www.highschoolmathlive.com/technology-and-calculators.html cost is in the typical range: https://www.highschoolmathlive.com/tuition-details.html Youtube.sample:

  21. If your student just wants to look at the material this summer - take a peek at BookBoon they have free fairly "skinny" books. Some of the Diffy Q books got good ratings. They have ads in the PDF files that's how they are free. I have numerous books I have downloaded and actually read a couple :) Just down-loaded "A First Course in Ordinary Differential Equations" by Norbert Euler et al as a refresher.
  22. Are you taking any DE or AP classes in 12th? missed that on quick read Since AP scores taken in 12th would not affect admission then you could just skip the exam(s). Helps to show with "challenging coursework" but good SAT II Subject matter test scores could show this as well. Take SAT Subject tests at end of course with June or August being a good test date to allow some prep. https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat-subject-tests/subjects As opposed to AP where her writing skills would shine, Subject tests have a lot of multiple choice etc. They aren't very expensive.
  23. For writing Essays etc get "How to Prepare a Standout College application" by Chisolm and Ivey. https://www.amazon.com/How-Prepare-Standout-College-Application-ebook/dp/B00DDQTKR2 We have it and it is an excellent read. DS got into Honors College. You can probably find it used or borrow from your library. Mark
  24. Sounds like you want something more of the Conceptual Physics type - which I think is best for 8th and 9th graders IMHO. Yes Clover Creek is the best first course in Physics!
