  1. yea too many acronyms here at WTM maybe we could use CoCo for College Confidential or just spell it out. CC was community college long before College Confidential existed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HOPE_Scholarship Be enrolled as a degree-seeking student at an eligible public or private college or university or technical college in Georgia. Does this mean you need to have a major, etc from the get-go?
  2. old article but I just read it How ITT Tech Screwed Students and Made Millions: https://gizmodo.com/how-itt-tech-screwed-students-and-made-millions-1786654315
  3. Have you looked at http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/453617-homeschool-high-school-chemistry/ there may be cheaper options out there. It is always nice to have someone else be the teacher.
  4. DS took the PSAT (National Merit Commended) and the SAT (just once was good enough) plus good AP scores 5, 5 and 4 for his Junior year (self reported). No SAT subject tests they were not required at the colleges he was looking at. He got a nice scholarship.
  5. A grant could be need-based or merit-based - it is the best kind of financial aid - no loan!
  6. Go for it - if he gets it - IU wins!! good luck
  7. My gut feel is self study for AP Chem would be a lot of work - how motivated is your student? Maybe just wait and do the AP Physics after Honors Physics - if that is on the horizon He might be better off spending extra time to elevate his SAT or ACT math score.
  8. Which particular AP or SAT 2 subject tests are you leaning towards? A student that I am mentoring now took both Biology AP and subject test last year - the subject test score was somewhat better but they are hard to judge or compare. Unfortunately the AP Bio class did not cover all the needed topics (this was an CB approved course). American History test discussion http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/285276-so-is-a-730-ok-for-sat-ii-american-history/
  9. the AP courses have good descriptions and do follow what's there (my son took this one) https://www.ucscout.org/courses/ap-physics-1 Looks like the regular courses have weak descriptions. There are a few samples on Youtube.
  10. We have used them through my DS' B&M charter school. 1) There is a teacher lead option which costs about $250 per semester for AP courses. It has some automatic grading. 2) The Basic option is $19 but not sure if they would sell that directly to home schoolers. If you live in CA you could get it through those charter type programs (not sure of the name). For Basic there needs to be both a teacher and student account (each $19 I believe). The teacher account gets access to the material (including answers I believe). The student account did not seem to have much because the B&M teacher has to provide the PDFs for readings and assignments. I print out the assignments then DS takes a picture using his phone and sends to the B&M teacher for checking. If you are in one of those special CA charters for home-schoolers this may worth pursuing - the Basic may also be good for a co-op type class.
  11. Is this considered "honors" level? In your opinion? pinned thread has it in "regular": http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/540313-homeschool-high-school-physics/?p=6153673
  12. please look at http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/540313-homeschool-high-school-physics/?do=findComment&comment=6153674 http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/540313-homeschool-high-school-physics/?do=findComment&comment=6153675 to see if others may meet your need since WHA and PAH are nearer the high end cost wise. Did your student complete WHA Honors Physics 1? http://www.wilsonhillacademy.com/academics/physics/ AP Physics 1 & 2 are where most B&M schools are headed. Are you looking for the E&M component? Mark
  13. from wikipedia "Robotics is an interdisciplinary branch of engineering and science that includes mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and others." When your student reaches his Junior year in high school, have him think about what aspect of robotics that he finds most appealing. This would help him choose a college major from those three or Computer Engineering. If he is more hands-on he may consider doing an Engineering Technology course of study. Keep him on track with completion of Calculus 1 or AP Calculus AB and at least one course in Physics before he graduates from high school.
  14. This description from the IMACS web-site looks quite good: https://www.imacs.org/class-curriculum/university-level-math-courses/ IMACS offers two University-Level Courses, one in computer science and one in mathematics. University Computer Science The university-level computer science program at IMACS goes well beyond just learning to code. Our courses emphasize computational thinking by teaching students how to apply mathematical abstraction to concrete computer algorithms. Rather than focusing narrowly on ideas relevant only to a specific coding environment, University Computer Science develops problem-solving skills that can be applied to any programming situation. In addition to building a deep foundation in computer science, students who complete the entire University Computer Science curriculum gain significant experience in four diverse programming languages including Scheme, Haskell, Python and Java.
  15. A non text language like Scratch would drive me bonkers. Your student seems quite gifted. I suggest you do a short, free or inexpensive Python course over the summer - I will update this with a WTM link. See if your student likes programming in general before signing up for the more pricey stuff. links: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/646526-python-course/ http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/660675-online-python-class/ feel free to send me a PM (I am semi-retired SW development professional) Mark
  16. slight tangent but maybe you could encourage your son (over the summer) to start making a list of possible majors and/or list of work/jobs he would find interesting we all changed our minds over the years so make sure you tell him it is just a start He must be liking some "stuff" now over other "stuff" putting on Guidance Counselor hat, Mark
  17. Where my son chose to attend - if you do not fill out the FAFSA you get neither need-based nor merit aid.
  18. My DS needs to have up to college "Spanish 102" for University so we may use theirs for a CLEP approach. He needs to take a placement test first. They came out last year in 2017. not WTM: https://www.reddit.com/r/clep/comments/7mvv3t/modern_states_free_cleps_counter/ https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-Has-Anyone-Tried-Modern-States https://homeschoolingforcollegecredit.com/2017/09/19/modern-states-for-clep-ap/
  19. If the word scholarship is in the award letter then more than likely a merit award - colleges don't use the term "merit". Income level may come into play for these as well.
  20. thank you for all the excellent suggestions - I was not very familiar with SAT subject tests since my DS only applied to schools where they were optional. Looks like you need a score of 800 or pretty close. I will recommend the August test date since it is very different from the AP C exams. I added a section in the pinned HS Physics thread linking back to this thread: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/540313-homeschool-high-school-physics/?do=findComment&comment=6153697 Mark
  21. I like to use a placement test to access any weaknesses. AoPS has a few on it's web site look for the post course ones (these have higher expectations). Thinkwell has one as well: http://www.thinkwellhomeschool.com/math-placement-tests
  22. I did find this thread: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/469092-recommended-free-online-study-materials-for-sat-physics-subject-test/
  23. Background: The son of a good friend of mine will be applying to competitive colleges such as Georgia Tech, Rice, Vanderbilt, etc. He needs to submit a science subject and the Math Level 2 tests. He already took Biology and Math 2. He scored a 700 in Bio. He wants to take the Physics SAT Subject Test in June or August 2018. He is trying to score around 750 in Physics. He will probably also retake Math 2 as well. He took an algebra based Physics course his Sophomore year and now as a Junior he is currently taking AP Physics C Mechanics. He feels he is rusty on the material not covered in his AP course. I am his "college coach" - it is so much easier to mentor your friends kids versus your own! Question: What are the best Physics SAT Subject Test review books that are in-depth enough to "relearn" some of the material? Are there any Physics PDF notes out there that could also be used? What are the best review books for exam prep with practice tests so he could see the areas he needs to focus on? thanks Mark
  24. So what happens if a college instructor gets sick with the flu? They just cancel those classes??
  25. Principles of Physics (CD-ROM) non Amazon vendors are cheap============================ if it does not "work" out of the box try: https://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html on the CD files directly.
