  1. "closed as of XXXX" means no longer approved a-g? kind of strange term for that
  2. From historical perspective yes due to the political pressure back in day from the many selective private colleges located in New York State. The SUNY system has come a long way since then and good students do choose to attend their better schools now. [ If you can't get in, what good does it do to have the great UC system? ] You certainly have to shop around but does CA have anything like Geneseo for example? proud to be from upstate NY Mark
  3. For HS level classes - please prefer to use the pinned HS thread if it exists - We have Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Foreign Language currently the Master list of on-line classes is nice but has less detail for HS classes.
  4. We have pinned threads where these type reviews can be posted - just be objective and factual not make it "a personal attack" - look at examples that you would like to read Be aware that some students like different presentation methods - don't low rate a provider just because their face did not appear in videos or they did not have many videos! But do point out the presentation style. For the most part these providers are not free and should expect both positive and negative critique. Be sure to read any disclosure statements you "sign" with the provider. If you don't name the provider/school and class - example "XYZ Homeschoolers" "Conceptual Physics 1" then the review would be kind of worthless. I certainly would like to see more objective type reviews - I have asked a few folks in the past but somewhere along the line they never did post anything. Oh well. Mark
  5. By the way - this student currently not interested in CS or Engineering.
  6. yes my sports was a great outlet. [ Although I ran into HS coaches playing/promoting "favorites" sometimes made it less enjoyable at that level. Benching some Seniors to give Sophomores more playing time "to build for the future" was one of my sports pet peeves. It's not like we were going to win the Stanley Cup two years from now! At the younger levels most teams are in two year age brackets so much less of that. ]
  7. For my volunteer effort, I will be meeting with a current HS Junior and her parents to discuss available majors that may be of interest at the nearby CC versus job prospects. I am quite familiar with the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) website but sometimes I think they paint a rosy outlook for some jobs. Are there other websites out there that I can look at that have similar information as the BLS website? Also may discuss four year degrees as well (after transfer from CC). thanks Mark see my last post
  8. Since some of the students here on this forum (via the parent) get fairly deep into SW development - this is a good article for them to read after a few courses: https://medium.com/@samerbuna/the-mistakes-i-made-as-a-beginner-programmer-ac8b3e54c312> Sound advice for the most part. "Beginner" in the article means start of career not first programming course.
  9. Any admissions folks here that could chime in on this? Since they closed the FAFSA "hole" then how would they know? see http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/670848-yield-protection/ This is a definitely a privacy issue that should be addressed if other colleges can get this information!
  10. look up contacts and have the student send some good questions via email - cheap and easy
  11. DS of MarkT University of Arizona Why: nice merit Scholarship and honors college Mom convinced him to stay closer to home BS Physics major He will be living at the honors college. Does not follow basketball so no worry there!
  12. Can we get a volunteer for 2018 who has a Senior student or two in the acceptance thread I can help update it as well but I want a non-moderator to actually create the thread thanks Mark
  13. done now at 134 different colleges!!
  14. I assume they recycle just questions - if they have a big enough data base then the tests can be reasonably random - photographic memory folks would be happy with this but that is small segment of the population It seems they were giving the same test to international sites just a short time after the US exam - that is pretty stupid in this day and age
  15. It is hard to keep the list view in sink with the acceptance thread please review the list view thread to see if your student is missing remember it is sorted by college name please post to this thread with DD/DS of and any scholarship info thanks that makes it easier for us to edit (The Accidental Coach and MarkT) thank you Mark ======================================================================== Hopefully someone will create the Attendance thread or whatever it was called in the past please include desired info on how that is done I could not even find the 2017 one on a quick search
  16. a fair amount of discussion on the Web: https://blog.prepscholar.com/sat-act-cheating-accused-what-to-do https://www.quesbook.com/blog/accused-of-cheating-on-the-act https://blog.collegevine.com/what-happens-if-i-get-caught-cheating-on-the-sat-or-act/ https://satprepget800.com/2016/03/21/accused-of-cheating-sat-act/ https://magoosh.com/hs/act/2016/cheating-on-the-act-what-happens/ https://www.justanswer.com/law/76pw2-son-recently-took-act-tests-college-second-time.html
  17. I'll leave it here since DawnM modified the OP so now this thread is mostly discussion of For Profit Schools. this quote: " ITT charged an estimated $77,000 for a bachelor’s degree and $45,000 for an associates degree, according to a Deutsche Bank analyst. ITT’s own internal documents show bachelor’s degrees were sold for as much as $90,000. The Senate investigation reported ITT had “the most expensive programs of any for-profit college, forcing many students to borrow the maximum available Federal aid and to take on additional private debt.” ITT charged about $77,000 for a bachelor’s degree and $45,000 for an associates degree. In 2015, bachelor’s degrees were sold for as much as $90,000. " This is a very high price for an associate's degree (remember this is just Tuition and fees - maybe books) - the student did not live on campus.

  19. With one data point how could they accuse him of cheating?? Did his school report him some how?
  20. Have them look at New Mexico Tech - good school - and would certainly qualify for the WUE scholarship with those scores. A lot warmer than Purdue :)
