  1. Mate and I lived in a tipi for a year, pre kids.. I miss it . most sacred home I've ever had... been years. I have half a set of poles done for a new lodge. this is a good reminder to collect and peel the remainder. I also love and miss braintanning buckskin playing fiddle and guitar with family and friends. not doing either of those actively right now either. did I mention this was a good post? yoga, Earth-centered religions, Christine, a Baptist, Bhuddist, Witch in Alabama offical label might be: Christo-Centric Pagan with Bhuddist overtones.. ( sounds like a wine label doesn't it :-) cheers. ~c.
  2. I'd do a modern foreign language until fifth. Then Id do Latin, there's so much logic to Latin, I'd wait until mine were more logic stage thinkers. and I'd use the natural language learning time of parrot stage to do heavy exposure to a MFL, so their accent is strong. But I didn't, and I liked Song School Latin and Minimus, and Getting started. Will you be doing classical or ecclesiastical Christine inal
  3. Which one? Any strong feelings out there? Thanks Christine in al
  4. We have been out of town and are leaving again soon. The HM book I got using Pongo's ISBN , seems a TEENY bit more thorough than Lial's, but only just and in some ways I like the way Lial's looks and feels on the page. I am eager to see how the video instruction with Dana Mosely and the HM sinc up. If they don't sinc up easliy, I'm keeping Lial's as a back-up. I do prefer Dana Mosely to the Lial's video instruction. just personal preference. I am still finishing Rigth Start E , Galore Park and working in Key to.. series this year, so I haven't looked at how the two materials work together. I think Lial's will be fine though. ~c.
  5. This year we are going to have in-class reading time. I have suggested books in the past, brought them home and planted them about, and even read a chapter to ge thme hooked on books I wanted them to read. This year ( in addition to all that) I am planning on a short list of " must reads for the year. What are books you would have on a " must read" list for a 3rd and 5th grader. Just pure Literature is fine. They don't have suppliment another field off study. ~Christine
  6. We are going to do that in 6th, then PreAlgebra in 7th. ( thanks to Pongo the ISBN goddess) I have Lial's and the Houghton-Mifflin that Chalkdust uses for Basic Math. both are remedial college texts. ~christine in al
  7. this is hilarious: Our plans for next year look something like this :willy_nilly::eek::scared::banghead: ~~~~~~~~ you are funny! ~christine in al
  8. I do suggest the teachers manual for Minimus , It added a lot of activities for us. I love the idea of Song school in the car. ( notice the cd has both classical and eclesiastical ( I know I didn't spell that right) prounounciations ( durn I hate spelling) ANYWAY,,, if you can you may want to copy jsut the classical prouniciation on a cd and keep the master safe, so A. you don't have to futz with only some tracks being wanted , and 2, it makes the copy almost disposable, if it's lost or scratched, no biggy, my 2 cents. ~c.
  9. I'll spend several hundred on each child after, science tutor, piano, taekwondo, soccer, 200.00 for access to Discovery Education Streaming, field trips, art class. and curricula. Writing with Ease, michael clay thompson Right Start Math Galore Park Junior Maths Evan Moor Daily word problems Key to series Latin Prep and Latin Exercises Getting Started in Latin First Language Lessons L'art d'Lire Petit Pont Geography curriculum that I can't remember right now. I buy lots used, and we eat cheap, and dress REALLY cheaply I probably spend 700 per child. We think of this as private school ~c.
  10. Good to " see you" Rose If y'all get some info, would you let us know. ~c.
  11. as John Prine said" Blow-up your t.v." remove all video from y'all's life. not as punishment at all. just remove all the " junk food" and eventually healthy food starts looking really good. Read to her beautiful, well-writen, books at bed time, or on the couch. AND check her out for any learning or processing or those kinds of problems. And read yourself, not just to her, but for yourself. let her see you enjoying reading. Okay: even though I wrote this is in a straight-forward, bossy manner, I don't REALLY know what you should do. I do wish you luck. ~c.
  12. I see herr linign things out in WWE ( text) and the lectures.. Is there any word that there may be a workbook format like WWE for Writing with Skill? ~christine in al
  13. i too think , loose the tally sticks. does she loathe " yellow is the sun" ? my visual child drew a picture of all the components of the song so when we used it to warm up she looked at her picture. we sang it once a day at the begiing of the lesson, moved on, the concept of 5 + is very helpful later. perhaps show her how it will help her later. I am always more ppen to learning something if I know there is a point to the seeming inane exercise. If your drawn (spelling?) to RS, you may take a peek at Miquion, There was a recent post about how it is very Montesorri. good luck. ~c.
  14. Typer Island has a hard level that the grandmother helped them get past, then they continued on, Dance Mat Typing is cool and free and can be thorough, I think. ~c.
  15. cuisinaire rods. (down spy car :glare:) My kid's Motesorri teacher used Miquion with them. I use Right Start and suppliment with Galore Park Junior Maths and Evan Moor word problems. If I could do Singapore , I'd do Singapore and Miquion. I like the Peas and carrots metaphor. But I can't get Singapore. If it doesn't work for you,,, you can look at Right Start. buy the manuals used and use base 10 blocks, abacus and the card games. skip the balance and the other matipulatives if you need to save money. ~c hristine in al
  16. Forget what I said about being the ISBN queen, You are the Chalkdust ISBN.... goddess!!!! They just arrived and Dana Mosely IS the host. The Chalkdust Basic math program for less than 50.00 total ( I'm thinking it was more like 29.00) You ROCK! ~christine in al
  17. But until there's a " handshake" it's the seller's curriculum to do with what they want. Once I agree to buy or sell something to an individual for a set price, then that's a done deal, but until then, it's mine and I can change the price. or remove it from offer. If I see something at a good price, I grab it. It could get sold to someone else, or price can change. I agree it's a bit disconcerting,,,, maybe... impolite... sort of mildly rude, ( like a burp in the elevator) but not dishonorable to checng the price on my materials. ( I don't think this is me your talkign about , I just went down on a price, can't imagine anyone complaining about THAT :-) ~c.
  18. I love the WAY Right STart teaches, but as we were testing this year, I wanted to cover topics not covered in RS at the level we were. So, I look at the state requirements, look at Junior Maths and cover those topics. I love them. I will also be using Latin Prep this year. but if your school doesn't teach Latin, that's not really applicable ( you may look at Michael Clay Thomas for Language Building. 5 minutes a day and your kids could be adding latin stems ) ~Christine in al
  19. It has been one of the best tools I have found. ds is doing Elementary Spanish and I find all sorts of videos relating to current history topics and even math topics that are hard to cover. not that I wanted to spend ANY more money, but 129.00 for the quality and quantity is worth it. thanks so much! ~c.
  20. WE'll be using Latin Prep and the Practice books very slowly this year. Latin Practie Exercises Level 1. I"m so sorry I don't know how to do links,, anyway, that's what we are using. My youngest will be doing Geting Started and I love that he uses the 2nd person plural " y'all" perfectly good word, that. cheers, Christine in al
  21. Thanks. If this works, this will be unbelieveable!!! thanks again! ~christine in al
  22. Dana Mosely ? thanks so much, I know I'm needy on this, thank you for holding my hand. ~c.
  23. Alabama Public Television has been supplying educators ( even homeschoolers :-) with Discovery Ed STreaming for free... They can't afford to do that any longer, so ,,,,, sigh, now that we are addictied, I am exploring paid access. Does anyone know how to get Discovery Ed streaming? Thanks, ~christine in alabama
