  1. I think it will definately be good for this year, especially with knowing when the school day is over. ds isn't staying on task very well, so it will hopefully give frame work for those skills. anyother voices are most welcome. I kow I don't know enough to decide yet, but would like to know what to look for. Was ATS helpful? We are using it to remove some of the charge from my grading his work. I am very curious to see how they respond to a child's work. thanks again. ~c.
  2. I know a few local folks who seem happy with it. I am just wondering about " a dark side" ~c.
  3. Is there anyone out there who used Calvert, then left them for reasons other than money. I am finding it SO easy to use I feel almost guilty. I am dreaming about coming back next year ( for 7th) to ALL, WWS, HO, MCT,Jacobs (et cetera) But right now, Calvert seems very much " good enough" , but is it REALLY? So, I'd love to hear from folks who USED Calvert for at least a year or at least a semester , and then found they had missed something. Or used it and regretted it later. OR folks who used it for years and are so happy they did. Any takers? ~c.
  4. ds 11 years old starting at 8, dd 8 years old starting at 9, she just wakes much more slowly. ~c.
  5. I don't even now what some of these are yet, but I'm learning and I'd love to know the difference between these two. Thank you both, Angela and 8fillthe heart. ~c.
  6. I'm sure this is posted all over the place, but I can't find it. Can someone give me the standard science sequence for college bound kids. I need 7th onward. Do some folks mix-up topics every year? the usual math sequence as well would be helpful. ~c.
  7. Bless your heart, If you a' Yankee living in Chaaarrlston, you might want to whisper when you say " they ". ;) ~christine
  8. Lincoln and Christopher Collier have written some balanced books, I just read The Bloody Country. historical fiction that offers several views from many characters about " why we are fighting" the Collier books are now part of our reading schedule. ~Christine FROM Alabama
  9. He's coming to for a math/playdate tomorrow. I'll set him up with Khan tomorrow. blessings. ~christine in al
  10. a friend needs to self-school after school. he's 11, but just tested in Gamma MUS. missing some basic skills Do y'all suggest MUS or Teaching Texbooks for kid on his own? ~christine in al
  11. Here's why. ( and maybe he'll like the cesspool connection) Origin: before 1000; (v.) Middle English sinken, Old English sincan; cognate with Dutch zinken, German sinken, Old Norse sǫkkva, Gothic singkwan; (noun) late Middle English: cesspool, derivative of the v. ~Chritine in al pretty funny for ME to answer a spelling question. I'm pretty sure I spelled derivation incorrectly, I KNOW I mis-spelled my name. that's ChriStine in al
  12. IF it seemed immodest for the 13 year old to be in the room HE could have been guided into leaving the room. Why not teach HIM to behave in a modest way. Who knows what kind of emotional baggage was in the room. some researchers reported that a full 10% of women have been molested some time in their life. That's so you might can find some compassion for this weirdness. Their problem, not yours. you sound creative and flexible and caring... my kinda woman. ~c.
  13. so, this beautiful box comes to the door. really through looking text booky curriculum, some one else will grade tests . so excited. hmm no answer keys. called " answer keys are available on line" " but I want a hard copy" " you may buy those seperately" price: for complete curriculum, answer keys 27 dollars per grade. down here we call that " triff'lin" ~christine in al
  14. our calvert boxes arrived for next year, and I'm pretty excited. I think the 8 am to 12:20 sort of day will work for us. I and my odest are particularlly looking forward to the ATS, somone else to grade his work. I'm happy to see some Calvert chatter here. I absolutely love SWB curriculum, but I'm looking forward to trying Calert for a year. It looks very complete, but I'm planning to keep adding Latin Prep and Piano lessons. full days. ~christine in al
  15. My kids ahve been in a small private school for the spring. The spring sabbatical was exactly what we all needed. One of the things we have enjoyed is it removed me from grading. It has been so peaceful around here. ds ( 10) has really appreciated the separation of roles for me. The ATS option ( someone else grades every 20 lessons ) is the main reason we are going with Calvert this coming year. I am also really enjoying not spending the spring planning.. down side, I am missing not spending the spring planning... My house might be a more orderly and peaceful environment, I may finally get in that garden. It is definately " school at home" but that's what we've been doing anyway. a local mom I know uses C. and her 3 girls score in 90% S.A.T. she says she thinks about supplimenting every year, but never does. ds is hoping to get into a competitive highschool and the rigour will be good for him. Oak Meadow is beautiful,,,I longed to use them.( I also long to be an unschooler,, really) but compare the price of OM or private school and Calvert looks cheap. So, I can't tell you my experience actually using C. yet, but I'm about to be a Calvert parent as well. at least to give it a go. If not back to : WWE FLL Right Start then Chalkdust History Odessy STOW Latin Prep French SWR word lists ( trying AAS,) ( and 17 other things Ill try to cram in there) good luck finding your way. ~c.
  16. Tracy, exactly what I wanted to know about Calvert. And Merry thank you so very much for your insights on perfectionism and how to help ds with options. ....uhm so what are some? I'll make us a cup of camomile for the next batch of corrections. I've been on holiday and just came back to the cool new writer's workshop. groovy. ~c in al
  17. Don't some folks have review copies of Writing with Skill? Any rumors of publication dates and if it will be published with workbook at that time? ~Christine in al
  18. crstarlette: good question about letter grades. We did use them for TaeKwonDo academic acheiver designation, but no I don't need to give them letter grades. but they tend to want them. I hear alot of " What would you grade that". Easy in Maths, and Selling, but writing is tricky. I think ds connects corrections with him doing something " wrong" and my disapproval. profectionism strikes again. Tylianna, other than the outrageous cost, what did not work for you with Calvert? If it's not private. thanks. ~christine
  19. I'm very interested in someone else grading my kids work. We are in a sabbitical from homeschooling and they are in a small Montesorri school. We are all loving mom not judging work. Calvert is appealing because someone else can grade the work. ( after private school, the cost is doable) I love my current curriculum choices, but the mom/kid relationship will be so much happier if mom is not the grader. And I don't have any idea of external folks to grade current curriculum. I have been using and loving: RS MATH ( moving to Chalkdust ) MUS ( 8 yr old does NOT want to talk about math, just do it) FLL WWE SWR ( and a little AAS) Latin Prep ( we'd keep that up) MCT Town Level History Odessy for older SOTW for younger kids are 8 and 10 Thanks in advance for any insights, and experience y;all share. ( I'm leaving town so might not reply , but really appreciate your time to repsond, Thanks. Christine in al
  20. I feel so very lucky to have the first two with the female narrator. ( my appologies to the artist) I'm not buying the Jim Weiss versions. over the top. I"m sure he is a nice guy, and his style fits some folks, but not us either. ~c.
  21. ( plus units cubes, tens bars, hundreds flats and thousands cubes.. hey, I used the set WITH the Right STArt so I'm trying to tuck it into my one thing restriction) ~c in al
  22. transient Chris, cost is high, dh and I have agreed that if we could find the money fo rthem to go, we can find at least a portion of that for more college and retirement savings. JenniferB, I love the holistic outlook. kids very happy, I'm very happy, ( SO glad to not be having school arguments) husband very happy. long range goals for ds is a boarding highschool school for math and science. I do not think he will make it in if he stays at private school for several years, We are only considering for next year, 6th grade and only if he can successfully work the Chalkdust program at school ( teacher will allow for time, but I can't expect instruction from her,, it's my program choice ) dh and I have said I might could afterschool Latin 20 minutes everyday. unsinkable. laughing, we aren't Catholic, but dh says what I want is nuns. What I REALLY want is classical subjects taught in a Montesorri method. thanks all.~c.
  23. How to decide? Kids are in small private school . We all LOVE IT. It is beautiful for the sabbatical I wanted it to be. Now they are wanting to stay. What would you use to compare Hsing to a particular private school. HOW would you campare academics other than SAT scores. they took them last year and I can have them take them again. I expect Math to go down because I ( uhm) taught to the test the last month before. I have low energy so school had gotten to just feeling like we were slogging through a check list. They are delighted to get up and go. No complaints at all in the mornings. Teacher says ds 10 can bring a video player and do Chalkdust there. I recon I could afterschool 20 minutes of Latin ( a big concenr that they aren't getting any) A good day at home is more academically rigourous( ugh, I can't spell) than a good day at the school. a bad day at home, less so. non-tangables. friends, group work, easy for me. in addition to SAT, how would y'all compare? ~ christine in al
