  1. Exactly. I think many think that it is OK if someone does not have insurance since they can always go to an emergency room or doctor. Well if your situation is not urgent like needing a hip replacement or needing gallbladder surgery (for non emergency gallbladder situation) or cancer then they do not have to treat you. Emergency rooms only stabilize you and they do not offer ongoing care that is not needed to stabilize your vital signs and condition. Therefore, as happened to mom, you will probably be told if you cannot pay your bill for chemo or radiation, then no treatment. I saw a woman one day in my doctor's office who did not have health insurance and was told if she could not pay cost of visit (about $200.00) up front then no visit. Some doctor's charge much more. So here in the US we have a lot of folks who cannot get care at all unless they have insurance or a lot of money which was a lot more people before the ACA law took effect.
  2. It is headline news on the Washington Post and the New York Times today and I have seen numerous articles on the same in those 2 papers.
  3. I am sorry about your daughter but is this indeed really the fact about other countries? I have read many articles about other countries offer drugs that we have not even approved yet. Or how in many countries drugs are often way less expensive than here. When I need particular meds I saved thousands of dollars by ordering from Britain at the time.
  4. I think it is important to point out that wait times are longer for elective surgeries and this is a function of the country choosing to spend less money on healthcare. Actually as a nurse, I see no problem with longer wait times for elective procedures since sometimes the procedure may be worse than doing no procedure as in the case oftentimes with back surgery for example.
  5. Well you can thank those who fought healthcare reform for your crappy choices IMHO. These same people also fought offering a public health insurance option for all marketplaces since for profit insurance companies did not want competition.
  6. This is simply not true. Additionally try get cancer treatment here in the US if you have no insurance or money to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars. My mom was told no chemo unless she could pay her bill despite having insurance (which we were grateful for since my parents went without insurance for 3 years and certainly could not afford to pay for health care out of pocket). http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/06/sunday-review/long-waits-for-doctors-appointments-have-become-the-norm.html This article debunks what you have said: http://www.pnhp.org/news/2012/june/5-myths-about-canada%E2%80%99s-health-care-system
  7. Yes but what they need is something like this which is what surfers might wear: https://www.amazon.com/Kanu-Surf-Sleeve-Platinum-Rashguard/dp/B00JYCKSHK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1466714342&sr=8-2&keywords=men%27s+rash+guard+long+sleeve Or like this: https://www.amazon.com/Roxy-Juniors-Long-Sleeve-Guard/dp/B00EK1R2NS/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1466714432&sr=8-8&keywords=women%27s+rash+guard+long+sleeve These are cool IMHO. Then they could always use the comeback line of something along the lines that "I'm no fool. I don't want to look old before my time by frying my skin!" or something similar.
  8. I bought form fitting long sleeve swim rash guards for ds to solve a lot of this problem. Well worth it. I even bought a neoprene swim hat that swimmers wear to cover his ears but I have yet to convince him to wear it.
  9. Yes but acne can be devastating so I would want to treat if you can by at least seeing a doctor. Does she have cystic acne or regular acne? I would at least see your pediatrician. If cystic definitely see dermatologist. I would not waste your money on essential oils. My kid had pretty bad regular acne on face and back. Doctor prescribed epiduo and tretinoin cream. If your dcotr prescribes adapalene gel and you mix it 50/50 each time on your hand you use it with 2.5% benzoyl peroxide that would be equivalent to epiduo which can be expensive. Adapalene is generic and so it tretinoin but tretinoin is more expensive. Check goodrx for discounts and if name brand check for coupons. My kid uses tretinoin in am and adapalene/benzoyl peroxide in pm. You could try just 2.5% benzoyl peroxide in am and adapalene and benzoyl peroxide 2.5% at night. We apply this for my son since he does not apply thoroughly all over. We also use mild Stridex with aloe vera in the green box two to 3 times a day. Have your child also wash face 3 times and day and shower and wash hair without conditioner or 2 in 1 shampoo daily. Amazon carries the green Stridex in a 3 pack and the 2.5% benzoyl peroxide called Claror. You could also potentially buy prescriptions from Canada for less but check adapalene price if your doctor orders. Expect that this regime will make acne worse in first several months and then to get better. You need to be religious about the regime and not let up even if acne seems to have cleared. The only time we let up a little was when his skin became overly dry which we did for a day or so but still washed face, etc and skipped adapalene.
  10. He can do it since he does it all the time. It just looks time consuming to me. As to whether calculators can do this I am unsure. You can tell I remember very little of math!
  11. When did the email come and what was the subject line and what was the exact sender? I cannot seem to find any emails yet we have bought a lot of ebooks.
  12. He has a graphing calculator Ti 84 which they only use for certain things. We are reviewing pre-calc topics over summer. School uses Saxon Advanced Mathmatics and and has used saxon algebra 1 and 2 in previous classes. Here is a dumb question-what about prime factorization? My kid always does them by hand since his school did not allow calculators until middle of algebra 2 and since then only for limited functions.
  13. I believe in minimal but smart calculator use. What usage is acceptable that will not take away from learning the math?
  14. I also recommend therapeutic clay for exercising fingers and hands. You can find it on amazon. They also have squeeze balls for hand strengthening.
  15. Teacher at kid's school is toying with the idea of mainly using Barron's AP guide for this course.
  16. Going on sale 6/23 on Homeschool Buyers Co-op. We are thinking about this to supplement AP US Government and Politics at his school. Wondering if it is more detailed than Crash Course Government series?
  17. I wanted to add the IMDB is my friend with the parental advisory for graphic scenes since not only do not want to see graphic violence but I also do not want my kid seeing graphic violence.
  18. So does this mean I should not watch this show? I cannot stand explicit violence at all. I don't need to see heads rolling around on the ground or someone guts being taken out as I saw on a drama about Queen Elizabeth which I had to stop watching as a result. That show could have done those scenes very effectively without showing graphic violence and by only implying violence :glare: I don't mind sword scenes and other battles as long as they do not show any graphic violence. As to why shows need to show graphic detail is beyond me since I think it lessens the quality of the show. As for nudity, I don't mind seeing some as long as they do not have sex in graphic detail. But again, implying these scenes is much better IMO. I did hear that the Game of Thrones has too many gratuitous rape scenes which I think is totally unnecessary and demeaning towards women.
  19. IMHO I would just do cursive since it is easier per Occupational Therapists and it is more functional for school as in the ability to write quicker when proficient. I would use traditional cursive or HWT cursive. My kid does traditional cursive with capital letters that are print (similar to HWT cursive) for increased legibility. Practice everyday for half hour and have him do all papers in cursive. My kid had lots of issues with handwriting and pencil grip. It took about 6 months of solid practice before he became proficient at cursive and now he prefers cursive. We still practice occasionally when his writing gets a sloppy again. If he has poor pencil grip, get good pencil grip to use that forces proper pencil grip.
  20. My kid has Speedo Vanquisher 2.0 and the speedo goggles in the 3 pack from Costco. Both seem to not work well and leave marks on his face. I have tried loosening and tightening them but he still gets leaks. Any recommendations for a swim goggle with soft cushions around eyes and that really work?
  21. We are currently using WWS in the summers and had a lot of exposure to WWE methods and to some of those books as well. My kid is in charter school so does not have a lot of time during school year. I plan on covering WWS2 key chapters this summer as much as possible ( he still needs fun!) but was wondering if IEW SWI level C would be useful for SAT and other types of tests like AP exams if we did not stick to the style checklists which I abhor. I even have the IEW High School Writing Intensive and their workbook on Elegant Essay. Do you recommend any of these as a supplement to WWS which I think is excellent? I guess what I am wondering is whether IEW will confuse my son's from WWS methods which I think is fantastic? My kid is a fairly strong writer. I am wanting something that reviews essays quickly while we cover the details in WWS. he just took AP World History ans was unable to finish 3rd essay (only wrote thesis paragraph) which may have been a timing issue for him but I thought more practice on essay work might help.
  22. Thinkwell is going to be on sale again 6/23! I am happy because last I checked Homeschool Buyer's Co-op said they would not be able to offer reduced price on Thinkwell again.
  23. This is confusing because I saw one page where it said the scores are released on different dates depending upon where you live and looks like maybe we won't receive our scores in world history till july 7 or so. Is this true? Also, if they did score already why would they make kids wait a month or so if what I saw is correct?
  24. I totally agree with this article having been an ardent feminist all of my life. I have repeated said that I think that even if a women is naked out in public that she still does not deserve to be raped and that the rapist is always wrong. I know full well that women in a burqa or a nun's habit could get raped. I strongly feel that we should repeatedly teach our sons' about respect for women and about consent as in that British tea film and consent and sex. That being said, I think it is prudent to teach our sons and daughters how to minimize harm to themselves since that is commonsense and unfortunately we live in a world where there are some bad people. Of course, using precautions will not eliminate all risks but I think it makes sense just as wearing as seat belt makes sense. So I have repeatedly over the years taught my son how to protect himself and minimize risk by teaching him to wear seat belts, to look carefully when crossing the street, to carry his epi-pen, to dress appropriately for the weather, to not go with strangers, to not let others touch his privates or to see him naked, etc., etc. We have also had many conversations on the dignity and equality of both men and women and of all races. We have also had many conversations on the dangers and stupidity of the binge drinking and drugging that often occurs among high school and college kids. We have told him of how kids have actually died or hurt their health from this or who committed crimes. We have also discussed alternate activities for him to enjoy in his college years such as clubs and volunteering. My husband and I abhor the drinking and drugging culture and are doing our best to prevent him from seeking this out as an outlet to make friends. Since we live in the city we have also had many conversations on how to protect oneself from robbery or assault with our son such as not staying out late or using uber later at night. How not to fight a robber and to give them whatever they want except in the case where you have to defend your life or to defend against being taken to another location where we advised to fight like heck or to try and run away. We have also had many conversations on sex and how it should only take place ideally in a loving relationship and ideally when he is older, etc., etc. We have discussed on the drawbacks of teenage parenthood and about birth control. We have discussed about the sexual abuse, etc. I would tell my daughter the same if I had one. As for clothes, I think both men and women should dress fairly modestly but again a rapist is always wrong. I do not like to see women dressed in a too sexualized way in general and not because I think they are more likely to get raped. It is because as a feminist, I have always despised how our culture sometimes puts pressure on women to be scantily dressed or to wear excessively high heels or do crazy things to their bodies just to please men. I think women should be pleasing as is so to speak without going through contortions. Now of course, I can understand wanting to look attractive, we all do but I always felt I never had to do things like that to look attractive. My 2 cents.
  25. Here is an article to support what I have said: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/04/25/how-oklahoma-cops-took-53000-from-a-burmese-christian-band-a-church-in-omaha-and-an-orphanage-in-thailand/ This is one of many articles I have read. The Post did a series of articles on this abuse from what I recall. Honestly, I think the drug war needs to end for all drugs. We should spend the money saved on education, prevention, and rehab.
