  1. This is not the same scenario described here, but similar. https://leadstories.com/hoax-alert/2020/07/fact-check-florida-motorcycle-death-is-not-undermining-state-covid-death-data.html?fbclid=IwAR2q0W9SPBR3t8-K7GdZeFBfcLlR8xrb2LyDcVNlzvuiiPduI2cjOdIMT-M However, in this case, the idea that the motorcycle crash was counted as a COVID death was disproven.
  2. Yes! They finally posted the order and I saw that also!
  3. I need to look up the order itself, but I have not seen it posted yet. I am not sure if religious entities are excluded or not? It is a mandate, so it is enforceable.
  4. @beckyjo I totally understand. Our situation is similar except that we have our own health issues and my parents' to consider. There were about 100 people in our co-op and as many as 12 to 16 in each class, times three classes, plus assembly (with singing) and lunch. I am so sorry. I am grieving too.
  5. We have a unique situation as a family. Three of us have autoimmune diseases (Transverse myelitis, Sarcoidosis, Celiac) and the remaining person has asthma. My mom is very unwell and goes to the hospital weekly for wound care, and my dad, who is her primary caregiver, teaches my kids art (normally). So yes, this is what is going to convince me not to return. Also, the masking being optional if the mandate drops, and that it will be super hard to distance the kids six feet in the tiny church classrooms.
  6. So apparently they do not plan to require anyone but the affected family to quarantine. I can see why this would be problematic to do otherwise. We change classes every hour, plus there is lunch, so there could be many, many families impacted if all of those who were with the kids for that day had to also quarantine.
  7. Right?!! I mean, they don't even verify the identity of the person who they are testing?
  8. Update on the "people are getting calls saying they were positive but were never actually tested" issue. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/medical/concerns-arise-as-some-receive-positive-covid-19-results-but-never-got-tested/ar-BB16Wkwg?ocid=sf So apparently what has happened, in this case, is that people receive a number when they get in line, and the result is associated with that number, so if you leave the line then the results of the person after you are recorded as yours. @gardenmom5
  9. Broward county today. This is worse than my state.
  10. Asking prayer for my SIL's grandpa currently in a Tampa hospital. It's a super long story but because of COVID (in general, he doesn't have it), no family can be present with him, and also because of COVID, getting a hold of the hospital staff to ask about his status is difficult. Because he has a UTI/sepsis, he is experiencing dementia and refusing care. It's super complicated but super sad. My FL family is really feeling discouraged because they have been really so careful and locked down for so long and are now facing many more weeks/months of the same. It's just hard. Praying for all of the boardies experiencing the same.
  11. They weren't going to require it for ours, but presently the county that co-op will be held in is under a mask mandate. I think this is why the policy is written with "masks required for 10 and up" but the front page says that the policy is subject to change at any time without notice.
  12. Can anyone share their COVID policy (or information about it)? Our co-op just put out their policy but it is "subject to change at any time without notice" and there is no detail in it regarding what will happen if someone is actually diagnosed with COVID-19. For example, it doesn't appear that anyone but the family who has COVID will need to quarantine. There is nothing there regarding quarantining of classes, etc. Or what will happen if multiple people come down with COVID.
  13. I did not consider this. Does anyone know if Dolciani is considered honors if you follow the "regular" course from the TE?
  14. My friend used to say: there are two kinds of kids: Kids that struggle with cutting, and those that cut their own hair. LOL. My boys "failed" cutting in preschool.
  15. There might be two questions here: 1) Should I do English grammar in tandem with Latin? and 2) Should I do grammar level Latin, or wait until the child is older? _________ My youngest did Song School 1 and 2; Latin for Children A, B, and C; and Latin Alive 1. At this point we were burned out. My oldest did the same except instead of Latin for Children C, he jumped into Latin Alive 1 and finished Latin Alive 1 and 2. My observations: the Latin for Teachers course I bought (no longer sold, but probably available in Classical U from CAP) suggests that the students have grammar in tandem with Latin. This was taught by Karen Moore, an actual Latin teacher in a private school. She said that she coordinated with the grammar teacher. I have heard that you don't need English grammar if you do Latin. I am not sure if that would be true for my kids. I think knowing what a direct object was and understanding parsing of sentences prior to doing that in Latin was very helpful. That said, we did not use Memoria Press' products and they are very different. Maybe if you use MP stuff the grammar is not truly necessary. My kids would have needed the grammar if for no other reason because they needed help with mechanics (comma placement, etc.). Also, really there was not any significant time spent in any of our Latin on identifying the difference between a phrase and a clause and types of clauses, etc. We definitely needed that, again for mechanics reasons. I can't imagine not having covered grammar in tandem with Latin for Children. Other curricula might be built differently. Also, I know Latin for Children was reworked, so maybe it is different now. The second question that you may be asking is also relevant. The answer is--it depends on your kid. But just be aware that they may burn out by the time you get to high school Latin if you do as many years as we did. Some kids love it. Mine did not. It might have been the curriculum choice? I don't know. But others on this forum have mentioned burnout so that is something to consider. You could just do grammar level Latin and not high school Latin, or vice versa, or you could do both. The flip side is that most high school Latin moves very, very quickly. So if they have had no prior Latin, it will be very challenging. It was challenging for my two even with prior Latin. A possible solution to this is to slow it down or choose a curriculum built in such a way that it slows down that learning progression.
  16. These are some websites I had bookmarked for making toys from household objects. I am not sure if they would be helpful but you can check them out. https://sciencetoymaker.org/ http://www.arvindguptatoys.com/films.html http://www.arvindguptatoys.com/toys.html https://www.wired.com/2016/01/how-to-build-a-super-simple-electric-motor-out-of-stuff-you-already-have/ Have you ever seen Junkyard Wars? It's been forever since it's been on TV but there are tons of episodes. It looks like some are on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G22CSYyDTo0&list=PL3MHe17K-JvA74CFjv4PwUJvN5s1bAm8F&index=2&t=0s Apparently Junkyard Wars was the American version of "Scrapheap Challenge" which was a British show, so you can look for that one as well. These are engineering focused units https://www.eie.org/engineering-everywhere/curriculum-units
  17. I just realized that what I typed isn't totally clear. I liked the OUP books better than the Dorothy Mills books. I would have still chosen the Human Odyssey books had I to do it again. What I liked about the OUP books was the primary sources. I felt like it rounded out things nicely.
  18. Thoughts on this? Note: preprint study, not reviewed https://www.scmp.com/news/world/article/3093690/coronavirus-are-two-strains-together-deadlier-one?fbclid=IwAR0PurzOhu9KivwpSljHiAa0QaU_JCYnHG7-0ZgzHMzam54XBTya9LuDLPw
  19. Fly to Jesus, J.I. Packer (July 22, 1926 - July 17, 2020) What a blessing you were to us. “Wait on the Lord" is a constant refrain in the Psalms, and it is a necessary word, for God often keeps us waiting. He is not in such a hurry as we are, and it is not his way to give more light on the future than we need for action in the present, or to guide us more than one step at a time. When in doubt, do nothing, but continue to wait on God. When action is needed, light will come.” ― J.I. Packer, Knowing God
  20. Hi. They just reworked everything this past year so it's going to be tough to get specific feedback on the English 1 classes. They changed them, as well as English 2 and English 3. It used to be English 2 was high school level, and now it is not. I have several friends that have taken classes from TPS before, and now everything is different than it was. My youngest is taking English 1 in the fall (he is in 8th). He just completed Writing Fundamentals 6. I thought about having him test into English 2 (since it is no longer high school level) but he was so stressed out at it that I dropped that idea. So he will be in the journeys & quests class with Mrs. Holben. We don't have any specific experience with her, though. His teacher last year was Mrs. Lilly and my oldest's teacher was Mrs. Shearon. I expect the grammar in TPS to be easy and simple based on what we had with WF6 and English 2. English 2 grammar had a lot of focus on MLA formatting and some other concepts that seemed higher level. WF6 grammar was super simple and I supplemented at home with Grammar for the Well Trained Mind (it's his second time through it). For English 1, I have not purchased the grammar book yet, but if it would be helpful, I could do that and let you know what is in it. I am not sure if I will supplement this year for grammar or not--my guess is I will need to. For English 2 (even high school level) I felt it was light on literature. YMMV. I did supplement that as well. But my kids have both really benefitted from the writing instruction. My oldest is taking a writing only class this fall (English 3 Confident Composition).
  21. We used Human Odyssey 1, 2, and 3 and supplemented, but I didn't break it out perfectly by year. If I remember correctly, book 1 spilled into year 2. I supplemented with Oxford University Press' World in Ancient Times and World in Medieval and Early Modern Times volumes for years 1 and 2. For Human Odyssey 3, I supplemented with OUP's Pages from History. I think I used part of Dorothy Mill's Middle Ages book in our second year since the OUP books didn't have total coverage of that period. I would say I liked the OUP books better, but it is hard to compare the two. DM's books read more like a narrative and less like a text book. We supplemented with Map Trek as well. YMMV, but I can recommend these three history books and the OUP books. ETA; for my youngest we did HO3 in 7th grade and just discussed. For my oldest, he did HO3 plus part of American Odyssey and a bunch of OUP Pages from History books and I am transcripting it as U.S. History in a World Context. I created a guided reading document for him to take notes in.
  22. Okay, so the reviews were on this episode. america's test kitchen Season 20, Ep. 22 I am working on trying to find it online. It has not been posted on their website yet. Some of the mixers jumped/moved around on the counter so you want to avoid that.
  23. I didn't read the responses but America's Test Kitchen just had an episode where they rated compact mixers, and it might be worth checking out. https://www.americastestkitchen.com/equipment_reviews/2025-small-stand-mixers P.S. I can't find the episode. I will try to locate the video.
  24. 128 more deaths reported for the state today Broward hasn't had any deaths reported for a couple of days, but reported 13 today. =(
