  1. How about one of Dickens novels or something by George Eliot like Silas Marner?
  2. I know of a family who took an Omnibus class with Mr. Baker and were not pleased. I wonder how his Rhetoric class is. I am interested in feedback for the Rhetoric class. I don't know about Mr. Wilsey. Online classes only require 4 essays per year if I am not mistaken. On average you spend at least an hour for discussions three days a week. Readings were mostly done during their daily free reading time on some days and weekends. We used Western Civilization text. We also have BJU US. History. Ds. didn't care much for Rousseau's Social Contract. So far, we have only done the Primary Readings. We may do the secondary readings in the summer. HTH!
  3. You could join a Junior Toastmaster's Club in your area or join the NCFCA - http://www.ncfca.org. Look into a local speech club or debate club or get together with other families for oral presentations. NCFCA website has resources you can use to help with speech and debate. HTH!
  4. How about "The Chronicles of Narnia?" My kids loved it at that age. You can watch the movies after you've read the books too. HTH!
  5. EKS, we are in the same situation as you. Ds. is halfway through Foerster's Algebra II and Trig. and will continue to work on it during the summer. Do you know if Mr. Chandler (MWB) is coming out with DVDs for Precalc. course? Here are some of the programs we have been looking into : Derek Owens Precalculus course using Michael Sullivan's Precalculus text : http://www.derekowens.com/0910/Syllabus0910PrecalculusLAC.pdf I like that ds. can work at his own pace for this course and be accountable to a teacher. Potter's School Precalculus course using Warren Esty's text :http://augustusmath.hypermart.net/tofchtml.html Chalkdust Precalculus: http://www.chalkdust.com/precalout5.html Foerster's Precalculus: http://www.keypress.com/documents/ALookInside/Precalculus/FPC2_TOC.pdf Foerster's is my favorite but will not be feasible because of the lack of support materials. Michele, what does the DVD contain? Why do you not like Chalkdust? Does it not cover all that Foerster covers? If any math expert on this board like Jane in NC, or Jann in TX, or anyone else can take a look and make a recommendation that would be great. I am having trouble figuring out what is best/rigorous/challenging etc. I didn't mean to hijack this thread but hope we can all get some of the answers we need. Thanks.
  6. Here is an online option: http://www.derekowens.com/1011/index.php Derek Owens is quick to respond to any questions and gives good advice. I am thinking of using them for Precalculus next year.
  7. No experience with CC. My 9th grader has been taking AP classes online which has been great for him.
  8. Wow! Thanks Gwen. Very reassuring and helpful. One thing less to worry about for next year. I have enrolled ds. in AP Chem. Blessings.
  9. Joan, thank you. This post is so timely. I was looking for something like this for my auditory younger ds. How is ds' prep. for AP HG ? My ds. is trying to cram this week. All the best for his exams! Peace, Nissi
  10. Ds. is 14 and he is taking 3 APs this year. It has been a great experience. I am so glad to challenge him to some extend this way and get credit for it. Since he has completed most of the required highschool courses, APs have been a great way to have him home and still keep him challenged. We might consider college courses in 11th and 12th grades, but if he chooses to there are so many AP courses to choose from that will keep him busy till 12th or higher.
  11. 4th ed. Precalculus text? Also, how does this compare with Chalkdust or Foerster's Precalculus? I would like to do Foersters since that is what we did for Algebra I and II but there is no support. Chalkdust looks more feasible with DVDS. Thanks for any input. Nissi
  12. Lori, Congratulations! Thanks for sharing with us. We have benefitted so much from your posts. Yes, please be around.
  13. AP US Govt. exam is done. Ds. did very well on MCQs and okay on the essays. He is expecting a 4 or 5. We'll see. He has two more to go on the 12th and 14th. Thanks to this board, I was able to give my son the state homeschool code and the procter gave him all the necessary help he needed.
  14. Thanks Leanna. It is hard for me to judge the content for a Rhetoric class...may I pm you? I have a lot of questions.
  15. Yes, my youngest started Apologia General Science at age 10 and loved it.
  16. Different options : a) You could continue with Omnibus IV textbook which is geared for 10th grade. The CD that accompanies the text has answers to all the discussions questions and essays. It also has your schedule for weekly reading and writing assignments. So it is very easy to follow. b) Since you son loves history you could consider an AP History course through PA Homeschoolers. You could choose between European History and U.S. History. European History uses Spielvogel's Western Civilization text that you may be familiar with through Omnibus. HTH!
  17. Ds. would have completed Foerster's Algebra II and Trig. Thanks for any input. Nissi
  18. Peggy, I don't think you need to enroll to purchase the DVDs. Just go their online store and purchase it.
  19. Ds. is taking AP Human Geography in 9th grade. It is a great AP to start with provided your child has some interest in the subject. Other APs that could be good to start with maybe US Government and Politics, Art History, Music Theory, and English Language. I think if your child has mastered any subject upto highschool level then he/she is ready to take an AP course in that subject or if your child has great interest in a subject that would drive and motivate him to study indepth about it. We are doing most of our APs with PA Homeschoolers. But I think Danielle's daughter self studied for AP Human Geography successfully. You can google for her posts. HTH!
  20. This is the sequence dc. has followed so far. After SM6, my oldest did Foerster's Algebra I, Jurgenson and Brown Geometry, Foerster's Algebra II and Trig, and for Precalculus we haven't decided on the text yet. The plan is to continue with AP Calculus and AP Statistics. Ds. uses DVDs from Math Without Borders for Algebra II. My second child completed SM5, Lial's Basic College Math, and is currently doing Foerster's Algebra I with DVDs form Math Without Borders. HTH!
  21. Ds. used the Jurgenson and Brown text for Geometry and loved it. Duke TIP program provides DVDs for this course. I highly recommend this course
