  1. So...if you are using butter, cream, cheese...do they all need to be organic or grass fed? And is your bacon nitrate free? I'm finding the cost of all these things to be prohibitive.
  2. We're using Apologia's Human Anatomy and Physiology right now and I keep having to skip parts or give more explanation because of her young earth and no evolution theories. I wish I had chosen something else. But it is so readable. And everything except those two things are explained very well. And I am lazy... ;)
  3. This is how it is supposed to happen. Your sister was questioning the values she was taught and knew she needed to move out live the way she wanted as an adult. Hopefully she learned a lot by the experience.
  4. I think we have all known some personally. Most that I have known are either extremely strict causing some personalities to rebel, or so lenient that they are not allowing the kids to realize the consequences of their own actions.
  5. I have such a hard time relating to these stories. I can't see mine making the decisions that would cause me to kick them out. It would have to be drugs/alcohol abuse, being promiscuous in our house, being abusive to family members. None of my teens/adult kids are anywhere near to any of these situations. We have also let them make their own decisions and own their own mistakes from a young age. We have worked at not becoming something to rebel against. And we have good kids. They have learned from their mistakes. If they did do...one of the things I listed...we would have to kick them out. They are not allowed to subject those things on the rest of the family. And it would break my heart that they are making choices that affect our relationship in this way. As for working/going to school--we expect them to be doing one of these if they are living at home. But if they are not, I don't make them work 8 hours a day for me instead. I encourage them to go to school or find a job. They don't always do it on my time table, but they have done it so far. Eventually.
  6. I'm starting at the 11th since that was the first paycheck of the year. 1/11 $ 56.94—groceries at Walmart 1/12 $ 35.70—dh and I ate out while grocery shopping; $178.50—groceries at Winco; $4.77—much needed clothes for dd12 1/13 $ 0.00—yay! 1/14 $ 25.16—dog food at Walmart (forgot last time) 1/15 $ 0.00 1/16 $ 0.00 1/17 $ 48.00—curriculum; $13.99—book for dh 1/18 $ 2.10—groceries at Costco (along with a $100 gift card we had); $20.86—dh and I ate out while grocery shopping 1/19 $ 8.26—groceries and a magazine at Walmart; $1 for a Diet Coke at McDonald's I think we need to start eating at home even though we are grocery shopping...
  7. I was thinking the same thing, but thought I had read that it would be skipped--I was mistaken. This is what I had seen: "The topics in the field of Earth Science sometimes present students and parents with controversial issues, including the origin of life on earth, formation of the universe (cosmology), and other issues. It is up to the parents as first teachers of their children to discuss these issues with their students and instruct the students in Church teaching. We have done our best to point out these controversial issues and to provide guidance on how to address them. For example, the topic of the Big Bang is studied in Quarter 4, Week 4, but Church teaching on this issue is addressed within the course plan."
  8. I've been reading Holt Science reviews on Amazon--I think that Kolbe uses it because it is set up so that the chapter on evolution can be skipped. But you certainly don't need to...
  9. When we tried NOEO it seemed really disjointed and didn't like it much. Others, I'm sure, like it just fine though.
  10. I thought that the author of Rainbow Science is Christian, but he wrote it to be secular?

Two of my kids are going to Community College everyday and taking my car unless I have something already planned. Not being able to go anywhere really helps to not spend as much. Though yesterday's books were on Amazon...
  12. Growing up we knew a family that used FHE to discuss problems the kids were having with each other. They called it family fight night :sneaky2: .
  13. Yes, I've always allowed them to drink pop--But we don't have it in the house so it is a treat to have when we eat out (which is...maybe once every two months for the kids).

  15. I think that episode 4 will be on PBS this Sunday. After it shows there, it will be on the PBS website.
  16. I believe this is for a kidney infection...
  17. I started Whole 30 this week and also started back to school after having way too long off. I don't think it was wise to start both the same week. I have a bit of brain fog going on and it's not boding well for getting it all done. I messed up last night--I was hungry and couldn't think of what to eat so I had chips and salsa...I shouldn't have, but it sure tasted good ;) . Today I've had: Breakfast- scrambled eggs coconut milk smoothie Lunch- Meatloaf Green beans (both left over from dinner last night) Dinner- Chicken breast sweet potato fries green salad with pears and pecans
  18. This is us too. I keep thinking that maybe we should be getting our literature for the Kindle to save on bookshelf space, but the books I want aren't on there. I like to feel a book and turn the pages anyway.
  19. Our Girl Scouts in MT always did Thinking Day--but they did choose countries to represent, not states. We're not in Girl Scouts this year, so not sure what they are doing.
  20. I think that a common reason to put hsed kids back in school is because the parents know they are behind and what they are doing is not working. I know people at our church have talked about us because my 12yos has difficulty with reading. They think it is because he is hsed and I'm not teaching him. He also has Sensory Processing Disorder and possibly has Aspergers, but I haven't had him tested for that one. Even if they don't know these things about him, surely they can look at his twin sister and see that she is doing just fine and is on grade level or above. He is actually above grade level in math. What do they think--I taught her but refused to teach him?
