  1. I am considering buying Rod and Staff English. Do I need the teacher's manual, worksheets, and tests? Any suggestions on how to place them (my two 12yos)? We have used Learning Language Arts through Literature and Daily Grams previously, but that's about it.
  2. I don't think anyone here thinks that they shouldn't have the right to protest. Many just think that they didn't think through the protest very well.
  3. My now 19yos refused to finish the Hunger Games series and the Harry Potter series because of how badly they were written (when he was younger). He was kind of a snob that way ;) I, on the other hand, had no such issues with reading twaddle...
  4. I think that if I were having them do it on their own (I think that is the way it is set up?), we would skip the history and science completely and just use something else. I don't mind if I am reading with them and am able to discuss it immediately, but I don't like them reading it without me, coming to their own conclusions, then us discussing it after.
  5. I am so happy for you--and curious about what has happened since you left the boards... I completely understand needing to keep some things off the internet though.
  6. I would have let my 4th grader read it understanding that they would not comprehend everything in it. I would also make them read it when they were older so we could discuss it again. None of my kids has wanted to read them. Something about hsing and not wanting to do what everyone else is doing...if everyone else their age had not been reading it, they probably would have ;) .
  7. The interview said that the school sent home a letter telling them that they were reading the book and why and that there was an alternative book to read if parents didn't want their child to read it. Her parents did not read the letter and were not aware that she was reading it until she had read half of it. That is her parents own fault. She is learning a lot though about standing up for what you believe and freedom of speech. That could be a very good lesson to learn. I read the Hunger Games and thought they were extremely dark. If I had realized that they would be so sad, I wouldn't have read them. I kept thinking there would be a happy ending eventually and there never was. That is the nature of these types of novels though. But at the same time, I can see some great discussions coming from them and it wouldn't hurt for them to start in middle school, especially in public school. It would help them think about the results of violence and hopefully see that there are no good results on any side.
  8. It looks...interesting? I think something like this would work. But it uses the Bible as a history text and history texts as optional and supplementary--imo that is backwards. And it teaches science as young earth--we believe in evolution/old earth. So, if your beliefs fit with these things, then it would work fine, I think. For us this particular curriculum would not work.
  9. I don't post all that often, but have been on these boards for 10 years with 2 different names--I have really missed your posts. I'm glad you are back :thumbup1: .
  10. My dh had callings in scouts for the first 13 years of our marriage. As soon as we had a son old enough to go with him, he stopped getting those callings :glare: . It is a huge time commitment for a young family.
  11. It was said to be a hate crime because it was about their religion. It certainly looks that way to me also. If it weren't about their religion, the beards and hair would not have been the target.
  12. I've always let them pick--it was baths until they were about 8yo, then showers from then on. We only have a bathtub functioning right now. It's driving all the kids crazy :D .
  13. And how many judges have we heard about that are anti-homeschooling to support the grandparents that are anti-homeschooling?
  14. Do any of you use it? How do you like it? We are not in a state that requires testing, but I was looking for something to evaluate my youngest two.
  15. About 8 years ago, we moved across the country and next to a member family with their oldest having high functioning autism. (Haley was diagnosed while we lived there at about 5 years old.) She was at our house a lot, so I knew her pretty well. They talked to the PP about the situation and the PP had a "helper" called. The person they called did not know her very well, and had no idea how to deal with her, and didn't seem to be able to deal with her issues even after being taught how to deal with them. She had no patience. After 6 months the other kids in primary would not even sit by Haley because she was always in trouble with her helper. At that point they called me to be her helper. She was never in trouble with me, because I knew her and understood what could and should be done with her to help her be able to get through church happily. The change in the other kids in her class was amazing. They all knew she was "different" but they now accepted her. A helper is a great idea with situations like this, but needs to be someone with the understanding to deal with this particular child.
  16. West Wing, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Mythbusters, 24, Private Practice...It seems to have similar content to Netflix now.
  17. I think the Lord lets us get ahead sometimes just because something else is coming up to wipe it out. Frustrating.
  18. We have 2 wards and there are 7500 people in town.
  19. We like the History of US, but haven't tried American Odyssey. I would find samples of both online (I'm sure they are somewhere) and have her read them and see which she prefers.
  20. I would transfer to the 0% cc. It gives you a year to prove steady income.
  21. I tend to lean more towards a Dr. Sears philosophy in parenting, so I found this somewhat offensive. The language is obviously trying to steer you away from the way I think and insult the way I think. No way I would go. I would just tell your friend that you aren't going to be able to make it. She doesn't need to know why.
