  1. Wilson puts out a program for kids who test below the 50th percentile in spelling. It is called Just Words. It is pricey but might be something to look at. I think it is about $500 for the whole program.
  2. I would be interested in this schedule! I am debating about adding the Guerber/Miller books to our Ancient Greece studies. Thanks!
  3. Thanks for this! Did your ds enjoy the memoria press guide?
  4. The lion in the gateway looks like a great book for my son. Thanks for the second recommendation.
  5. Thanks for the documentaries! I had forgotten about that element and I know ds would really enjoy them.
  6. We are getting ready to start a unit on Ancient Greece with my sixth grader. Does anyone has suggestions for favorite resources? So far we are using K12's Human Odyssey as our spine. We are also doing some work with Hakim's Story of Science. I was thinking of adding Archimedes and the Door of Science. I want to add some Greek myths. I have D'Aulaires for my 7yo dd but I am not sure if I should add another version for my logic stage DS. Any other literature suggestions? I am wondering about Suzanne Strauss Art's book, The Famous Men book, or perhaps the Oxford World in Ancient Times? So many choices!
  7. I used those SRA cards when I was young as well. I loved them. I have looked around and they are so expensive for home use. I will take a look at these workbooks - maybe they will be a reasonable substitute. Thanks,
  8. Confessions of a homeschooler has a k4 program out that looks fun and very structured. The price is great as well. I like Calvert K for preschool although it is overkill and expensive. It has lots of great fine motor suggestions that were useful for my boy. HTH,
  9. When I pulled my son from public school we tried singapore math, which I loved. Testing at the end of the year revealed gaps so we did a year of saxon next. We did facts practice, all the lesson practice problems, and all the mixed practice. We skipped mental math in favor of a CWP from singapore. It made a huge difference in his test scores the following year. We are back to singapore but I am reviewing his test scores this year and when I see him work problems I am noticing some hesitation. There is probably not enough review for him although I am not sure. We are contemplating a move back to saxon or perhaps Lial's BCM. HTH, ETA: All the problems with Saxon made for a long math session every day!
  10. For my 6th grade DS: Math: Singapore Std. 6a/6b - considering Lial'c BCM LA: WWS, MCT Voyage, ALL, Daily Paragraph Editing 6 Art: Sculpture Music: Piano Spelling: Apples and Pears Science: Exploration Education History: Finish up Ancients and start Middle ages w/ K12HO Literature: Lightening Lit 7, LLfLOTR or The Hobit lit guide from MBTP Latin: First Form maybe... Logic: Not sure yet!
  11. No personal experience but I thought k12 phonics has this with their online portion.
  12. Is all the teacher instruction included? I used an instruction guide from the iseesam.com site. It was really simple. I just had to train myself to say, "What sound? What word?" and to include lots of praise when they were doing well.
  13. We used these readers for my middle two and loved them. I only used through set 3 with one child and 4 with the other before they were taking off and reading library books. It was a sweet and pain free way to get them reading. The books from iseesam.com start with a review page for sounds and one for words and then you read through the book. Perfect for kindergarten since there is no writing and the way they are written makes guessing difficult for the student.
  14. This is a password-protected PDF. The password is the final word on page 8 of the Math Intermediate 3 Homeschool Testing Book. That's what I see when I click on the link. HTH
  15. Try k12.com LA2 or LA3. I also like MBTP for literature units. Just buy the lit guide and student workbook for the books you are interested in. MBTP does have some hands on and more complicated/involved projects so if you don't have time for that you. Ight not want to do them. Hth,
  16. Have you looked into Aquinas learning? I went to a presentation locally and it seemed rigorous and faithful. http://www.aquinaslearning.com/
  17. You can try reading the I See Sam readers. They teach reading with stories but they are phonetically controlled. I like them. http://www.iseesam.com/ http://www.3rsplus.com/
  18. I reviewed first grade extensively and if you search under my username you should find the post. Overall I think that MIF is more incremental and doesn't challenge the student as much as Singapore Std. MIF is easy to implement and the teacher guides are really good. It would take as much planning and prep as Singapore in terms of reading the teachers guide so if you want open and go check out Math Mammoth. We stayed with Singapore, which I used with older ds to great success, but for a kid who isn't math intuitive you have to be willing to camp out on topics and play around for a while. HTH,
