  1. They did this for my oldest son. Actually he was double accelerated for math, so by the end of third grade he completed fifth grade math (in the fifth grade classroom). Last year, he qualified for pre-algebra, but they didn't have a way to provide it for him, so they had him work individually on a computer program (no teacher instruction) doing sixth grade math. This year, he is supposed to be doing pre-algebra on a computer program but it hasn't started yet (we started school a few weeks ago). My second grader is also quite advanced in math, but now they are saying they will not subject accelerate because once they get to the higher grades, they don't know what to do with those kids. :( There are other areas I'm looking at too for gifted instruction, so I really appreciate all the responses. This is just one particularly stressful area. My second grader has been quite vocal to me about being bored and frustrated in math. All in all, our school seems to want to accommodate these students, but the actual follow through is lacking.
  2. If you have a gifted or advanced child in PS, what are some ways the school is accommodating them or meeting their needs? I'm asking because I'm trying to see if my expectations for our school are appropriate. Thanks. :) (cross posted in Advanced Learners board)
  3. If you have a gifted or advanced child in PS, what are some ways the school is accommodating them or meeting their needs? I'm asking because I'm trying to see if my expectations for our school are appropriate. Thanks. :) (I'm going to cross post this in general ed.)
  4. What topics/subjects are you working on with your kids after school this year? We started SOTW 1 this summer so I plan to continue that, maybe just a chapter a week. I've been doing read alouds after everyone is ready in the morning, before we have to leave for school. We listen to audiobooks on the way to and from school. My 8 year old has been asking for more challenging math and hasn't been satisfied with what they're doing at school, so I got Beast Academy 3A to start with him. Plus piano, TKD, Scouts, etc., so we'll be plenty busy. But hopefully not so busy they get overwhelmed (in which case, we'd cut something out). What's everyone else working on?
  5. I'm sad too. My kids went back a couple of weeks ago. I'd love to HS, but DH is not on board yet, so they go to school. I still have my youngest at home, but it's different having just her. I miss the big kids.
  6. This is perfect! I love it. My kids would love this because they'd have their own space without siblings getting too close. lol
  7. I love this!! Last year, my boys were both Harry Potter and we were able to borrow costumes from friends. The year before, they were Mario and Luigi.
  8. Hugs! This was/is me with my #4. Probably my easiesr, happiest baby but still not sleeping through the night at 20 months and just so busy. I never feel like there's enough of me to go around. And sleep deprivation is just plain awful. I'm sorry that you are struggling.
  9. Lol cute. My kids wouldn't have understood the question either.
  10. Sometimes I have to (temporarily ) take books away from my 7 year old so he can accomplish everyday tasks like getting dressed. He gets so engrossed in books and will read for hours without doing what he's supposed to.
  11. Actually, my kids are not even homeschooled but we have done some light summer schooling, including reading SOTW1. We were driving from MN to WI and as we crossed the Mississippi River followed by the Black River, my 5 year old shouted, "Hey look! Two rivers! It's just like the fertile crescent!" My husband was totally blown away. Maybe this will get him thinking about switching to homeschooling! Lol
  12. Lawnmower outside. Charlie Brown movie playing for kids. Youngest DD is sitting with me, stole my book and is turning pages, pretending to read.
  13. I read physical books about 90% of the time. I just find them easier to read. I do own a Kindle fire and occasionally read an ebook on there. My two older kids have Kindle paperwhites and read on them sometimes but read physical books more.
  14. I grew up with one sibling, but my mom was the oldest of 9 and we lived around all my aunts and cousins, so I saw the large family dynamics from them and always wished I had more siblings. I remember telling my mom that I wanted to have a big family when I grew up and she laughed when I said, like 3 or 4 kids. LOL We have 4 and while I don't think that's really huge, we don't know that many families with 4 or more kids and we get lots of comments from both friends and strangers about our crew, so I guess it's considered pretty big here. We are the only family in our church that has more than 3 kids, for example. I would love to have more, but since 2 of them are really, really intense kiddos, we are stretched pretty thin and have decided to be done.
  15. I am sorry that you had this experience. I'm angry for you and especially that she did this in front of your children! You are so much more gracious than I would have been. Hugs!
  16. Thank you for sharing! I am trying to be more intentional about nature study with my kids while they are home for the summer.
  17. We read it for fun together. We're getting into math that's above my 7 year old but he likes the story enough to follow along.
  18. $90 a month for unlimited classes for my DS. Family fees are capped at $200 a month. We also have a punch card option which we're using for the summer as he's busy with other activities and not going so often. $120 for 10 classes which seems like a pretty good deal.
  19. I'm doubly jealous. Not only does that school option sound lovely, but I am still stuck with icy MN winters!! Lol
  20. This thread is reminding me how much I used to love cross stitching. I haven't done any in years. Maybe it's time to pick out a small pattern. :)
  21. That is absolutely adorable! Thanks for sharing!
