  1. The new wtm comes out next week. I just haven't been very patient. :)
  2. Thank you for the link! That will be very helpful. I just picked ones that I thought looked interesting and that covered a variety of cultures. I'm posting here to get input from those who have read them (or DC have read them) because I find personal recommendations so helpful. I will go back and look through those lists....it's hard to pick when I haven't read them myself and I can't possibly pre-read them all before the school year. :)
  3. I will absolutely vote. I find one candidate very dangerous and I am very concerned about our country's future with that candidate leading. I don't love the other candidate but I believe that one is qualified to lead and I agree with most of that person's positions. There is another candidate that I loved but that did not get nominated. I may consider third parties but I will most likely not vote for them because I believe that is basically a vote for the candidate I cannot see running our country.
  4. Anyone? I'm looking for great non fiction and historical fiction about ancient times for middle school. Please help!
  5. I really can't wait for the new WTM to get here next week so I can see what is recommended!
  6. We usually do legos or coloring but there are some awesome ideas on this thread!
  7. So I'm working on a reading list for my 6th grader. He reads very well although can be sensitive so I try not to give him anything with too mature a topic. (in other words, he can read high school level literature but isn't ready for high school level content). I have literature selections already set, but I'd like to add some reading (both fiction and non-fiction) to go along with our history studies, which will be ancients this year. I have a few titles written down but I haven't read any, so feel free to critique/add/delete, etc. (I think I found most of these from the Sonlight site, looking at the package that lined up with ancient history and middle school). He reads fairly quickly, so I don't think this is too many books, in addition to his literature selections. Thoughts? The Trojan War (Coolidge) Mara, daughter of the Nile Eagle of the Ninth Flame Over Tara Black Horses for the King Archimedes and the door of Science Theras and his town The Golden Goblet The Bronze Bow
  8. My son was given this book by our church so I think I'll start here since we already own it. How do you use this book with your kids? Do you just read each section about the books of the Bible and then go through the actual corresponding Bible book? Do you start at Genesis and go through? Or let your kids pick what they want to read? I don't have any formal Bible studies myself, so I am learning at the same time as my kids.
  9. Ok, thanks everyone! I'm going to have to contact some local 4-h groups to learn a little about them. I've been trying to contact Girl Scouts but it's like pulling teeth trying to get any info out of them. I will say that one of the girls we talked to at the fair yesterday was 6 years old, showing her rabbit, so it looks like there are opportunities for younger kids here. We're going back to the fair tomorrow so I will ask around some more. 4-H sounds like a lot of fun.
  10. Can you share your experiences? Would you recommend one over the other? My boys have been in Cub/Boy Scouts since 1st grade and are happy doing that. My daughter wants to join Girl Scouts but the local council is pretty disorganized. I have asked around and no one is recommending that we join their troop (either troop is dying out, or way too huge, or just really disorganized). Today at the county fair, we saw some kids showing their 4-H animals and we asked them a few questions about other projects they do, so I'm considering that as an alternative, but I really know nothing about it. (There was no 4-H group around where I grew up). Basically, I'm looking for an outlet for her to explore a variety of hobbies/interests and get to know some other kids. Thanks! ETA - I'm asking for my 6 year old DD.
  11. My kids have been asking to start every day so we're doing our read aloud (which we would have done anyway) and I've let them start their math books just to satisfy them but we won't start everything else for a couple more weeks. I'm still getting my plans organized.
  12. Good to know! I went ahead and ordered the illustrated dictionary. Thanks!
  13. Thanks! I agree, there are a lot of resources! I have the required ones. I'm just wondering about the two optional ones, especially since I'm using a different spine than the one listed. I'm leaning towards skipping the additional encyclopedia but getting the illustrated dictionary from Usborne, just to have another source to look at pictures/diagrams in case he doesn't understand anything. Thanks for the input! :)
  14. X posted on K-8 curriculum board but since I haven't gotten any responses there, thought I'd try here. :) Who has used this program before? We're using ES Physics for the Logic stage next year. I already had the Usborne Internet Linked Science encyclopedia so I'm substituting that for the DK one and just adjusting the page numbers he needs to read. I have the Robotics book and the Bridges and Tunnels books. Do I need any of the other supplemental resources (Kingfisher Science Encyclopedia and Usborne Illustrated Dictionary Science) and if so, which would you recommend? (Trying not to have a ginormous stack of books to go along with the program.)

  16. Thank you for sharing! As we enter our homeschooling journey, I find that a lot of people ask what co-op we're planning to join. Honestly, between my 4 kids, I feel like we're involved in a lot of activities anyway and one of the reasons I'm taking them out of school is so that we're not so overscheduled. I wasn't planning on joining a co-op, and after watching this, I feel better about that decision.
  17. It's our first year, so I have a big learning curve ahead of me. My main priority is familiarizing myself with all the curriculum and teacher's manuals, and planning our our first couple of months. I have a few novels to preread. I also have Teaching From Rest, and I'm really looking forward to reading that! Oh, and perusing the new WTM when it gets here in August!
  18. Congratulations! It is our 15th anniversary today! I love that I married my best friend and we are still truly best friends. We are always there for each other and when one of us is having a hard time, the other is a little stronger so that we can get through anything. We are a team. Life gets crazy of course, but we always try to spend a little time together each evening after the kids are in bed.
  19. My youngest was/is a pincher while nursing, although she's much better now that she's older. When she was younger I tried to wear long sleeve shirts and keep her hands busy with a toy. The toy rarely worked though, as she really just wanted to feel my skin. She still tries to reach up or down my shirt, or poke my belly button. I'm ready to wean, but she's not on board with that yet. :)
  20. This is our first year homeschooling, and my list feels light after reading everyone else's but I also don't want to crash and burn after our first month, so we're starting with this and hopefully adding more in during the year or next year. Math - He was accepted to an accelerated math class at a local univ (designed for advanced middle school kids). Basically, he'll be doing Alg I and II this year. Literature - I'm still working on a list. Writing - IEW Student Intensive B ELTL 3 - grammar, etc. Science - Elemental Science Physics for the Logic Stage History - SOTW 1 with younger siblings, with additional readings. Piano lessons Maybe cello lessons Boy Scouts
