  1. When I visit my mother I drink raw milk from her Jerseys. It's always a shock to transition back to store milk, but I can't afford to buy it :(
  2. I love it when my friends post cute things their kids say and do. Or maybe I should say I <3 it :D
  3. Thanks for the reference! My vocab still stinks and I'm working on improving it :D
  4. I block every new game they come up with as soon as it comes out :P
  5. Some schools *require* Algebra 1 on the transcript, no matter when it was taken. Some schools want to see only the last 4 years. Sometimes a parent is not sure whether a year will be 8th or 9th grade and is keeping records just in case. Sometimes a kid may not have taken bio after his 8th grade hs bio class but taken 2 years each of physics/chem, and they want to reflect that he did indeed have a high school life science class.
  6. Things that annoy me, in order of precedence: Comments that imply that anyone who believes differently than you is either a raving lunatic or a total idiot. Comments that are flat-out untrue. Those @#%#$^(@^#$@ 'spider under her skin' scam videos that people keep falling for. When someone repeatedly posts the first two, especially combined, I tend to block them.
  7. I don't wear makeup. Ever. I don't think I'd even know how to put it on. All I know is that lipstick goes on your lips and mascara is somewhere around your eyes. Foundation? What's that? For me, an extra $10 means that I can afford a book that I want to read. My hair is always in a ponytail, and I've never been in a salon. Honestly if SO didn't beg me not to, I'd have gotten a buzz cut before now. I wash it at night and brush it, but I don't really do anything else with it. I don't shave my legs. I do shave the pits in the summer because it reduces body odor, but in winter they tend to grow out. I look nice in put-together outfits. I also have to think about what I'm putting on to wear them, so they get relegated to special occasions. I tend to get dressed in a hurry, so usually it's clean underwear out of the underwear basket, a clean shirt out of the shirt basket, and shorts/trousers from the bottoms basket. I have been known to take the first shirt and first pair of trousers off the top and be wearing a bright green shirt and bright blue pants all day without noticing. I wear ugly shoes because other shoes make my feet, legs, and back hurt. I cannot stand even a slight heel and they must fasten securely (no flip flops.) I guess people probably do look at me and say 'why doesn't she DO something with herself?' Well, that's why. I get an extra half an hour of sleep because I roll out of bed and I'm ready to go in ten minutes (counting breakfast which I make the night before.) I need that sleep. I suppose I could fix my hair and stop posting on message boards, but I don't *want* to. I just never felt the need. I don't stink. My clothes don't stink. My breath doesn't stink. I wear clean clothes, shower, put on deodorant and brush my teeth. Why isn't that enough?
  8. I don't really do either. I do love to read, though -- but I read fast enough that anyone talking that fast would be gabbling.
  9. Search Khan Academy for unit conversion for more explanations. When you search for practice sheets, dimensional analysis or unit conversion are both useful.
  10. BCM has all the arithmetic review at the beginning and starts from a lower base. The chapters are whole numbers, fractions 1, fractions 2, decimals, ratio/proportion, percent, measurement, geometry, algebra, statistics Pre-Algebra goes directly into some basic algebra, the chapters are integers (including negative), variables, applications, fractions, decimals, ratio/proportion, percent, measurement, graphs, exponents/polynomials. The chapters on fractions/decimals in Pre-algebra include signed numbers as a matter of course, whereas the chapters in BCM will be strictly positive. BCM also doesn't really have work with polynomials. Remember that these are written for college classes, so BCM would be one semester and Pre-Algebra the next. Strictly in my opinion, university students who place this low are likely to be severely math-phobic and need a gentle pace with lots of review to get started. I don't think both are necessary in middle school unless the student struggled a lot with the concepts from BCM.
  11. As Laura said, Spanish is designed to take you to GCSE level -- Latin Prep isn't. They recommend doing So you really want to learn Latin book 3 after Latin Prep 3. You'll also notice that Latin Prep 1 is labelled for year 5+ while Spanish 1 is labelled for year 7+. Based on that, yes, I'd say it's 3 years.
  12. Wow, I missed this the first time around, but it's awesome that you had fun. Those mishaps with cars stink! I had one where I was looking for diesel, so I went to the tank labelled diesel to fill a 5-gallon portable tank. I didn't realize it was a special high-volume one for filling semis, and managed to completely cover myself with diesel. :( Also, both my brothers sang barbershop for a while, one still does. :)
  13. I'd be so tempted to go with a namechange to Al. That's gotta be really hard to deal with. :P
  14. Kids of single dads, on the other hand, get a pass. We can't expect men to look after children. /sarcasm
  15. A glass of wine is *clearly* needed and medicinal in some cases :D
  16. I'm voting for Spaceballs. *duck* BTW, for everyone else who really hated JarJar Binks, check Star Wars: Episode I in 5 seconds. http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/thatguywiththeglasses/5-second-movies/91-star-wars-episode-i Warning! This site may lead to wasting a LOT of time watching his 'movies in 5 seconds' clips :)
  17. I would eat them with no problem, unless it was really, really hot.
  18. Well, it would seem more reasonable to take their name and information (driver's license etc) and tell them if it happens again they'll be banned. Allows for one mistake etc.
  19. http://www.nerve.com/news/current-events/98-year-old-woman-earns-judos-highest-degree-black-belt Keiko Fukuda, the oldest surviving student of Kano Sensei, who was the founder of judo, has been awarded 10th dan (highest level of black belt) by USA Judo. She is the first woman to be so ranked.
  20. I would be assuming that it's referring to groups such as this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_Liberation_Front
