  1. Joining the HS board, as my oldest will be in 9th grade next year  ... My DD has been using K12's The Human Odyssey for 7th-8th grades. We used SOTW for the grammar stage. I was planning on having her use SWB's History of the Ancient World for 9th, but she really enjoyed the K12 books. Is there something we could use for high school that is similar? I guess I should ask, those that use HoAW, do you supplement with outside reading? Is there a list of resources? I like how the K12 texts are illustrated in full color, so it would be nice to have outside sources that we could refer to.
  2. No kidding...Whitney is terrible. Glee is still on, too. :tongue_smilie::leaving:
  3. :grouphug::grouphug:::grouphug: Even though my 4th was only 3 days late, she was my latest baby. I thought for sure I'd go really early, but she kept us guessing until she was born! I was going crazy those last few days (ok, weeks :)). It's so hard to wait! Hoping you go into labor on your own very soon...
  4. :iagree: But, congratulations...whatever it is. :D
  5. Monday is our non-academic day, because DD14 has choir, DD14 and DS have writer's group, and DS and DD6 have homeschool PE that day. All that running around and I'm done for the day. Sometimes the older two will finish up whatever stories their working on for writer's group, but that's about it.
  6. :iagree: My 14 yr old isn't like this either (though she does have a cell phone so we can contact her when she babysits her siblings). She still enjoys playing with Legos, playing outside with her younger siblings, etc. I see the "teen thinking" among younger kids with a lot of my friends' (public schooled) kids. I find that the parents encourage it. One of my friends from high school is always posting photos on Facebook of her daughter attending formal dances (she's 12) and her son who is in grade school going to casual dances (dances in grade school?). The formal dance thing gets me, because these girls are wearing strapless and/or low cut dresses...it just looks really inappropriate. Our neighbors down the street have daughters who have been talking about various boyfriends since grade school. But this seems to be the norm nowadays. I just don't understand the rush to have them grow up...it goes by so fast! I'm very glad my kids seem to be growing up more slowly.
  7. Ok, this made me :lol::lol: I like unique names, but that one takes the cake! Three of our kids have unusual names that are objects (nature names) but they are all spelled correctly. DS's name wasn't popular when we named home, but now it's around 200 or so on the top baby names list. All of my DDs names aren't even in the top 1000. I like unusual names, but not unusual spellings...unless they're spelled traditionally (I like the traditional spelling of Rhys instead of Reece, etc).
  8. Woohoo! Been thinking about you all weekend...I'm so happy for you!!!
  9. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: Renee, that is something that could happen to any of us! I'm so glad he's okay!! Wow, almost the exact thing happened to us at a hotel pool! #3 was just a toddler, and I was holding her, sitting with my feet in the hot tub (DH was taking a nap in the room). Oldest DD and DS were in the pool. DS couldn't swim, so he was supposed to stay in the shallow end, but I guess DD thought she was a good enough swimmer for the both of them, so she pulled him to the deep end. He panicked and pulled them both under. Luckily, a lady was in the pool and she pulled them both to the side, since I couldn't jump in holding my toddler. We were all pretty shaky the rest of the day!
  10. What brand of co-sleeper did you use? I've co-slept with all of my kids, but I do it by pushing our bed against the wall and having the baby sleep between me and the wall. Worked fine for the first three, but getting in and out of bed has been a pain for me this time around! (Sorry for the thread hijack OP....)
  11. Me too! Hope all is well and you're able to update us soon. :001_smile:
  12. :grouphug: Hope it happens for you in the morning...keep us updated!!
  13. Awake on the west coast waiting :001_smile:...up with my newborn baby (and my pg test with her looked just like yours. It was so light I didn't think I was pregnant. DH had to convince me that I was!)
  14. Weird...my fourth (which I just delivered two weeks ago) was completely different too. My first three labors, my water broke before labor started and only lasted 3-5 hours. This one, my water didn't break, and I had really inconstistent labor pains for 11 hrs before she was born. But, once I hit transition, it was only 20 minutes before she was born (water finally broke during the pushing stage, which was only 3 pushes). OP, I feel your pain!:grouphug: I never had to wait very long for my other babies to get here...this one came 3 days late. They really like to keep you guessing! Frustrating, I know...especially when you pass your due date. ETA: I don't know how dilated I was, as I never had any internal exams this time around. I remember with my first two that the exams didn't really tell me anything anyway.
  15. Wow! I knew that there were yellow diamonds, but I didn't realize they came in other colors. Thanks for the link. :001_smile:
  16. Congratulations!! I was wondering how you were doing. :001_smile:
  17. My mom bought me a ring when #3 was born (we thought we were done...actually, we thought we were done when #2 was born ). I love it, and the colors actually look good together. They are in order from oldest to youngest: sapphire, aquamarine, and ruby. Our newest baby is a diamond...I would love to get a new ring with all of them on it. As impatient as I was waiting for this baby to get here, I was almost hoping she'd come in May, so she'd be an emerald. I was born in April too, and I think diamonds are boring. I've always wanted to have a ruby or an emerald as my birthstone.
  18. I finally made it to my actual computer to add some pictures: She's a sweet little thing. It's been so long since we've had a newborn around! We're all having a fun time with her. We were a little worried about DD6 getting jealous, but she's actually been the biggest help of them all. She's right there whenever I change the baby, throwing away the dirty diapers and bringing me clean ones, picking out new outfits for her to wear. Such a good big sister. :001_wub:
  19. I don't think it's bad at all...and the recommended amount is so small, it doesn't even fill your mouth. I will say that I like the taste now more than when I first started taking it. It tastes more like fruit juice to me now.
  20. ....and it's a girl! She was 9lbs even and was 21 1/4 inches long. We didn't know if we were having a boy or a girl, though I was guessing girl right before the end because we had a boy's name all ready to go. :tongue_smilie: We had a home waterbirth, and it went really well, though it was my longest labor yet (11 hours). Contractions were very erratic until the very end, and my midwife (wisely) decided not to come until right before the end because she was afraid that her being there would slow my labor further. I'm a very shy person, and it was just me and DH at home. Finally, I called her when I started shivering uncontrolably and I realized I was in transition. I had a contraction while I was on the phone with her, and she said she'd be right there. I got into the pool and 20 minutes later I felt the urge to push, just as she and the apprentice midwife walked in the door. Three pushes later DD was born! I'm typing on my phone, not sure how to upload a photo from here. I'll try to come back and one.
  21. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: Sending "no labor until everyone is ready" thoughts your way!! I kind of went through a similar experience a couple of weeks ago. My DH had to leave across the country for training with his new job right before my due date. He was gone for two weeks, and I usually deliver between 37-39 weeks so I was really worried that he was going to miss the birth. My midwife seemed to think that it wasn't going to happen. She said that our bodies will sometimes delay birth if we feel like we're not ready yet. She was sure I would go into labor as soon as he got back. Well, when he got back, there were a few nights that he was dealing with symptoms from his chronic illness (mainly horrible muscle cramps). He would not have been able to help me through labor while these were going on. Finally, 6 days after he got back, his cramps went away and I gave birth that evening! I was 3 days past my due date, and it was my longest labor (11 hours). My three previous labors were almost identical to each other in timing and duration...I believe this one was delayed because we weren't ready. Just adding my experience to give you some hope that your labor could be delayed. Extra :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: to you. It's no fun having to worry while you're pregnant!!
  22. I'm 38 and never had a mammogram, even though my mom had breast cancer at 41. I had a dr send give me a phone # for a free one a few years back, but the lady I talked to said they no longer offered them. I haven't had a checkup in about 10 years. Also, dental work. DH and I both need it. So do the kids. Dd6 has been to the dr once in her life, when she fell down the stairs at age 3 and we took her to the ER ($100 to tell us she was fine). My older two haven't been to the dr in about 4-5 years. We haven't had insurance in 8 years (we were self-employed) until just now! DH got a job that has great insurance ($500/mth for the whole family...dental and vision included) and it just kicked in for him this week (they have to verify the rest of us). We just used it for the first time yesterday, to pay for his $150 rx...it was only $28. We were paying about $250 total in rx for him a month, so this will help us a lot.
  23. :iagree: If it happened to our car, there's no way I'd make somebody pay, especially something cosmetic like that. If it was my kid, though, I'd pay for it. :iagree: A rental car? That's outrageous...the car is still driveable for crying out loud. P.S. I'm pretty sure Judge Judy doesn't usually make defendants pay for rental cars in situations like this. She seems to treat that the same way she treats "lost wages" and "pain and suffering." Yes, JJ is my one courtroom show vice.:tongue_smilie:
