  1. I wish. Unfortunately, we just attended the scholarship day this past weekend and they said several times that even if you were awarded more than one scholarship from them, RC money would not go beyond full tuition (not even including fees). The highest they mentioned was the Bittle, which provides full tuition, and the Beard isn't listed on their possible scholarships page. The Beard is still mentioned in the current catalog as being an exception to the not beyond full tuition rule. It would be awesome if that is still available, as the admissions folks and her interviewer really seemed to like her and it's currently her top choice school if the finances can be worked out.
  2. 1) How do you use streaming video content in your educational efforts? Do you watch videos about homeschooling, parenting, skill development, or education? I primarily used it to provide content for my daughter. 2) Do you use videos with your children as part of your lessons (not counting full online classes such as Well-Trained Mind Academy)? Yes. 3) What are your favorite programs/channels/presenters for this type of content? Why? In elementary, I used things like BrainPop, Discovery Education, Lonely Planet, and HistoryTeachers' music videos because they kept her interest. Starting in early middle school, I would sometimes pull in videos from Coursera (Bloomfield's "How Things Work" for instance), PBS, Annenberg Learners, etc. Having video material really enriched the experience for her. Moving into high school, we used Ken Burns, Great Courses, Great Courses Plus, Khan Academy, Coursera, edX, Crash Course, Digital Theatre Plus, and others. This was the point at which she did best with the lecture format of Great Courses. 4) How long, on average, are these videos? They ranged from a few minutes to an hour plus. 5) For this content, do you use paid services (Hulu, Amazon Prime, Netflix, other [please describe]) or primarily free ones (YouTube, etc)? Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime because we already paid for them for other reasons, and then free when at all possible for others. We got in on the beta for Great Courses Plus so we had that free for a while. What are your favorite programs/channels/presenters for this type of content? Why?
  3. I'm curious about how much social interaction students at Roanoke tend to have with students from other nearby colleges like Hollins, Radford, etc. Do they ever do joint activities, for instance?
  4. Coconut ladoos --basically sweetened condensed milk cooked with dessicated coconut and a bit of cardamom to make a dough, then formed into balls and rolled in dried coconut or chopped nuts.
  5. We've had friends' kids who did a "bring stuff for the animal shelter" birthday parties (and attach a list of needs from there), if you want to give the option for folks to bring things but not collect more toys. If you did that, you could get a dog biscuit cutter and make the rice krispy treats in the shape of dog biscuits or in fish shapes to look like cat treats (or both).
  6. My mother used to make Japanese fruit cake, though it bears little resemblance to a traditional fruit cake. I much preferred it, not being a big fan of the red and green candied fruits in commercial fruitcakes. https://www.southernfoodways.org/nancie-mcdermotts-japanese-fruitcake/ In our area, the classic was the Jane Parker fruitcake from the A&P grocery store chain. The chain went out of business, but someone has bought the original recipe and is selling them again on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Jane-Parker-Dark-Fruit-Ounce/dp/B001IAI922#customerReviews For our family, though, Christmas definitely included my grandmother's fresh coconut cake. http://www.tasteofsouthern.com/mamas-fresh-coconut-cake/ Getting the coconut ready (using a nail to poke a hole in the eye, draining it, cracking it open and prying the meat out, grating it) was always a big production. http://www.tasteofsouthern.com/how-to-open-a-coconut/
  7. Good luck to him! My daughter's best friend is currently in basic with the National Guard then will go on to specialty training and jump school before coming back for college locally. She wants to do military intelligence.
  8. Deviled eggs are often part of our holiday meals. They're inexpensive and can be done ahead.
  9. Pulled from our family tree (hopefully no duplicates from above): Adaline, Agrippa, Albertine, Althea, Amarinta, Appollonia, Arbesean, Artemesia/Arthemise, Arthesha Barvais, Bersela, Bessie, Bibianne, Blanche Cecilia, Clementine, Clorina Dentina, Dinah, Dionicia, Dolsa Easter, Elefare, Eliesheba, Elmina, Elodie, Elvira, Eula/Eulalie, Euphorsine, Evadean, Ezell Fancy, Fanny, Flovilla Glendora Hepzibah, Hilda, Honorah, Huguette, Hulda, Hypatia Iola Jacoby, Jennet, Judah Kissiah Louvinda, Lucretia, Luelsey, Lurina, Lutetia, Luzella Magnolia, Mahala/Mahalia/Mahaley, Malvena, Marcella, Matholine, Melvina, Minna, Mittie, Morena, Mourning, Myra Narcissa, Neomia, Nettie Odell, Olive, Ora, Osithe, Ottillia Perrine, Pharebe, Phillippa Rhoda, Romie, Rozilla Sabina, Sabra, Salida, Samala, Seba, Seluda, Semilla, Senoth, Serepta, Suda, Sukey, Sybele/Sybilla Tabitha, Tamar, Tappahanas, Temperence, Theo, Tirzah Ulsey, Unity Vada, Veola, Vergie Walpurga Zada
  10. We don't live adjacent to TN either, but it looks like a good deal. Between admissions and scholarship applications, my daughter's so over applications at this point that I don't expect any additional ones. :) She's decided applications are acting like an extra writing-heavy English class this semester in terms of time and effort. The two schools we're waiting to hear from are Appalachian State and UNC Wilmington. Have you seen the information about Western Carolina being one of the schools to lower in-state tuition to $1000 a year starting in 2018 under NC Promise (the others are Elizabeth City State and UNC-Pembroke https://ncpromise.com/)? Out of state tuition at these three will be cut to $5000 a year (a drop of close to $3000 for Western), in case anyone else is looking. My niece is a senior at Western and has enjoyed her time there, but it is really remote, too much so for my daughter.
  11. Up to 5 acceptances now. Add: University of NC at Greensboro University of NC at Charlotte No word on financial aid yet, and two more schools to hear from.
  12. Nothing's guaranteed, obviously, but we're hopeful. She has chosen schools where her GPA and ACT put her in the top 10% or better compared to published stats of enrolled freshmen rather than Chapel Hill or State where her scores would put her in the middle of the pack. Agreed about the reasonably priced. Even with 40% or better initial merit offers from the three private schools that have accepted her, they're still more expensive than full freight at the public schools she's applied to.
  13. Don't feel alone, our situation is all over the place, and we're on tenterhooks, too! Even though my daughter has some acceptances and initial merit aid packages, there's still waiting to see if there's anything need-based (hah! not likely based on our ridiculous FAFSA results), separate applications for other scholarships at some of the same schools, etc. Even having applied early action to all of the schools, I don't expect to have a full financial comparison until March or April, honestly.
  14. If it will be warm where you're traveling, colored pencils might be better than crayons, since they are not likely to melt if dropped/left in the car. Things we used on a long (2.5 week) car trip when my daughter was 5, along with other similar options: Colorforms (reusable sticker-type) or felt board and things to make scenes Metal baking sheet with magnetic playsets (scenes, "paper" dolls to dress, etc) Melissa and Doug magnetic dress up set Playmobil (there's a Playmobil 123 level for younger kids, if that's more appropriate to her fine motor skills)--my daughter played with these endlessly. She didn't really enjoy baby dolls, legos, or building toys like blocks. They have some nice small sets, look for "play box" or "carry case" sets. audiobooks Polly pockets if she has the fine motor skills to dress and undress them, though she may be a bit young for those mini travel dollhouse, stable, castle, or other play set (Playmobil, Melissa and Doug, etc make various ones, designed to be portable and be self-contained) finger puppets mix-and-match books, with the pages divided into three sections so that you can have head A on body C and feet E, for instance Mr Potato Head Do they still make Woodkins? This is what I mean http://www.thingamababy.com/baby/2006/11/review_woodkins.html If not, one could probably make something similar with thick cardboard. Magic Cabin has some cute things that are a bit different http://www.magiccabin.com/magic-cabin-exclusives/magic-cabin-exclusives.htm
  15. I'm afraid the photo isn't working. It's a notice telling you to update your account to allow 3rd party hosting.
  16. I was actually a bit surprised at the list, and I don't know how strictly they enforce it for somewhere like the community college, fyi, since my daughter is in her second year of DE with 8/10/13 credits (depending on semester) and I don't recall being asked to provide her immunization records. Per that link they should have asked.
  17. Good timing for this topic. My daughter has a doctor's appt soon so I can have them check to see what she still needs. We get the flu shot every year, she's had the HPV series, but I can't remember off the top of my head if she's had the meningitis one yet and if she needs a booster for DTaP. NC law requires college students at all schools (public, private, religious) have a required list prior to enrollment if they will be living on campus or register for more than four daytime hours of classes. http://www.immunize.nc.gov/schools/collegesuniversities.htm DTP Measles Mumps Rubella Polio HepB
  18. little individual boxes of sugary cereal, the kind I never bought normally pocky olives Swiss Army knife mini Tabasco sauce bottles https://www.worldmarket.com/product/tabasco+mini+to+go+travel+hot+sauces+3+pack.do World Market/Cost Plus has a lot of little edibles/sauces that would be fun https://www.worldmarket.com/category/food-and-drink/gourmet-miniatures.do?c=116732.117227&sortby=ourPicksAscend&page=all mini bottles of whiskey or other favored alcohol (obviously only for the grown-ups ;) ) This year I may include some wax for my daughter's braces along with other little things.
  19. I much prefer the frozen because there's something about touching the texture when grating fresh that I don't like. I usually saute it in a little oil with salt, pepper, and some garlic (typically Penzey's roasted garlic powder), then use it under something saucy like curry, stir fry, etc. We've also done the pizza crust and liked it quite a lot. I used this recipe http://www.fitsugar.com/Low-Carb-Cauliflower-Crust-Pizza-Recipe-3073951 and made a note that next time I would mix in some garlic and Italian seasoning into the crust itself.
  20. Third acceptance in! Now we will likely have to wait until January for the four state schools she applied to. The list of acceptances so far: Lenoir Rhyne University with merit scholarship (44% of cost of attendance) Catawba College with merit scholarship (42% of cost of attendance) Roanoke College with merit scholarship (39% of cost of attendance) and invitation to the on-campus competition day in November for further scholarships
  21. I have mentioned several times to my family that a good gift for me would be to detail my 15 yo car (to the best of their ability). There's no way getting it done somewhere is in the budget and I'd probably be embarrassed to take it somewhere since it shows every second of those 15 years, but it could sure use it. Photo books assembled from candids are great, look nice, are easy to do online, and there are often really good coupons from places like Walgreens to do them very inexpensively. We've done these as gifts for grandparents.
  22. Post a picture and maybe we can help find the pattern. You could also try this method of making needlepoint patterns from a photo https://www.thespruce.com/designing-needlepoint-from-photos-4024008. I've never tried it, so don't know how successful it is.
  23. 8 here as well with 34/35 in English on the ACT since 9th grade and A's in all English classes, including currently in her third DE one. I didn't address it. We also got to add in the odd year where they totally changed the writing score scale, so she has 8/19/8 over the three years of tests (the ACT serves as our yearly required testing for the state). Very frustrating.
  24. Is he okay with microfiber?
