What are your Christmas-Eve rituals?
calledtobehome replied to DarcyB's topic in General Education Discussion Board
For the last 4 yrs since my kids are the youngest we have a Christmas Eve party at my house. My mom, and my sis and her 3 kids come over and we always order out and make our own dessert. This year it's going to be a couple of trays from Chic-fila with a few sides. We play games, my kids usually play a christmas song on the piano, watch a Christmas movie like Charlie Brown or ELf then we open gifts. We all get a new pair of pajamas! Merry Christmas -

My husband wants me to buy some good towels in the next few weeks. We haven't had to purchase towels since we got married 9 yrs ago. He likes white towels but I don't know how I feel about all white towels and wash clothes. Looking for a good place to purchase good quality towels and wash clothes that will last us a while.

So...what are you doing for Holiday fun this week??
calledtobehome replied to Mommyfaithe's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Still having school until Fri but today was a snow day because we woke up to snow! We were gifted with tickets as a family to see The Lion King on tomorrow night. I have a bible study fellowship Christmas brunch, taking the kids to see the Nutcracker, making cards, wrapping gifts, baking cookies, decorating ginger bread people, reading lots of Christmas books, and watching lots of Chrismas movies. I just love this time of year! -
When are you starting Christmas break?
calledtobehome replied to athena1277's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Our last day is Dec 17th and we are going to see the Nutcracker. Looking forward for our 2 wk break. We are planning to do some baking, watch some family movies, continue to read Christmas books and just enjoy our time together. By the way Last year this time I needed to break earlier because I was just so tired and I end up taking a 3wk break. It all worked out. -
I'm using hooked on phonics along with explode the code with my 6.5 yr old and 7.5 yr old. My youngest son just finished level 2 of HOP and my oldest is not to far behind him. I plan to continue with the explode the code series. Right now he is working in book 4 of ETC. I did purchase the Master reader and I was thinking to start that with him this week but I'm wondering if I need to pick up with another phonics program or just start him with a spelling program and complete the master reader? I already have Sequiential Spelling. Any feedback would be appreciated!

On Friday my 6.5 yr old started coughing and his voice started to sound like he was getting hoarse. He didn't have a fever neither did he act really sick he was still his normal self. Then on yesterday my husband decided to check is throat and sure enough there was white mucus looking stuff in the back of his throat that would not go away. I had him gargle in warm water and sea salt along with peroxide and still did not go away. I decided to call the dr this morning just to get things checked out and sure enough he has strep! The dr. decided to check out my 7.5 yr old and she noticed that he was starting to get the white stuff to but not as bad as his brother. His test came back negative but the dr decided to treat both boys for strep at the same time. She looked at me and said let me just look at your throat and she said it was inflammed a little but nothing like the boys but I should call my dr. because I probalby will get it to. Now I'm not feeling well. Do you think I should call the dr for a prescription for myself? Will it be safe for the kids and I to be around anyone on Thanksgiving? Can I give my son chestal honey cough syrup while he is on an antibiotic?

What do you think about the Graphic Classics Books?
calledtobehome replied to calledtobehome's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Our day was busy so I'm just now reading the replies. We don't have many books like this in our home but they seem to be drawn to comic type books for some reason. I'm still teaching my 7.5 yr old phonics as he just doesn't seem to have the confidence like my 6.5 yr old does when it comes to reading. But when I read to them I make sure I'm reading classic good literature. -
We also use Chestal by Boiron. It worked great last week when my 6.5 yr old son and a cough that seem to get worse at night. The first ingredient is honey which is good for coughs. We also like giving hot herbal tea and soup. Hope your lil one feel better soon! http://www.amazon.com/Chestal-Cough-Syrup-8-45-Ounces/dp/B00016QTQM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1289708750&sr=8-2
