  1. If you are familiar with this test is it a good test to meet the end of the year state requirements? A homeschool mom at our co-op has her Masters in Eduacation/LD and she is offering to give the end of the year test for a small fee along with curriculum advice to the parents. Last year I used the CAT for my 1st grader. This year I will have a 2nd grader and 1st grader to test.
  2. My son just turned 8 and he doesn't have the confidence that I know he can have when it comes to reading. We were at the library and we found the We Both Read series. Not only is he enjoying reading with me but I already see a change in his attitude! If you child need a little boost you may want to give them a try. Here is the website: http://www.webothread.com/server/TreasureBay/website/main/scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=17
  3. I was able to look at a few sample pages of MCP. I think he may like it and atleast it's color. I didn't see any sample pages from School Phonics. Any other suggestions?
  4. Looking for a good phonics workbook that's not ETC. My son has just finished 3.5 and I really need to switch. It's not that we don't like ETC but for one his younger brother has moved a little quicker in the books and I don't want my oldest to start thinking he isn't smart. He really just need the extra time and practice. And I also think it's been kind of easy for him to guess while he's working. I'm using OPGTR and AAS 1. What workbook does the hive suggest? Thanks, Y
  5. Thanks I decided to get another set! I really want my lessons to run as smooth as possible without switching cards back and forth. I found someone selling it on the sale board for a good price.
  6. Do I really need two student packs for AAS 1? I'm going to be working with a 2nd grader and 1st grader? If you use only one student pack for more than one child at the same time can you explain your method and how you do it? Thanks Y
  7. Yes we worked on the number bonds and we finished all of Singapore 1A. I think I'll just order 1B and start as soon as we get it. Isn't that considered 1st grade?
  8. I have thought about this for a few days! Math issues! Here is a little background. Last year my on was 7 in 1st grade and in the middle of the year I decided to use Singapore Standard 1A. We finished the TB, WB, and test. This year when he started 2nd grade he was still having trouble learning his addition facts so I decided to leave Singapore and go with MUS Alpha. My son has mentioned to me numerous of times how much he miss his Singapore books. He told me yesterday that the MUS work was baby work and he didn't want to do it. I told him to take the test at the end of the chapter we were on and if he passed it we could move on. I Checked his work and was expecting every problem to be correct! Low and behold he made a few careless mistakes! I really want to just finish this year with Alpha. But now it seems like he is behind! If we start back in Singapore without taking a break we will be right where we left off in 1B. He just turned 8 and will be going into 3rd grade. Isn't this a little behind?? I even thought about keeping him in MUS and adding Singapore CWP? Please help me figure this out!
  9. It looks like I will need them onlStep 22. I got the entire set the TM and student materials with the file box for $20.00ppd. I just don't have the a-z letter tiles. I'm going to order the set they are only $11.00 but the shipping is $4.00!!
  10. I purchased my set used. I started on step 3 yesterday with my son I noticed that I'm missing the a-z letter tiles! I have all of the other letter tiles but the owner can't seem to find the a-z tiles. I used my Leap Frog Letters yesterday for the Alphabetize exercise. Do I just need to order another set of letter tiles or can I continue with the Leap Frog set? As I stated ealier I have all of the other tiles that came in the set except a-z.
  11. Thanks I'm going to give it a try. I noticed in your tag that you are using OPGTR at an accelerated pace how does that work?
  12. My oldest son just turned 8 two weeks ago. He really needs extra work with his reading skills. It almost seems like his brain is processing things faster than he can output or handle. He began his phonics instruction with Hooked on Phonics along with ETC workbook pages. I decided not to continue with HOP 2. Two weeks ago I began using OPGTR from the beginning just to make sure his reading is solid. We are now on lesson 42 and things are going well so far. Do you think it would be confusing to start him in AAS 1 program along with OPGTR/ETC. He has never had any formal spelling. Thanks, Y
  13. If I decided to go with MM which level would I get?
  14. Trying to make a decision on what program I 'm going to supplement MUS Alpha with. Looking at Math Mammoth or Singapore Challenging Word Problems. Any suggestions? Thanks,
  15. I don't usually dedicate my weekends for school. But over the last couple months I started doing math on Sat with my boys and it's been working good! Therefore my plan is to keep at it! I may even add phonics and reading with my 8 yr old since I'm trying to get him to build his confidence!
  16. Just wanted to give you my experience with HOP. I started it with boy my boys when they were in K. Loved the K program, first grade was ok but when I got to the 2nd grade program it just dawned on me that the program does not really explain phonics but just give you the sounds and words. My 6.5 yr old finished Hop levels k-2 and is now doing Master Reader but he also does the ETC workbooks and he reads very well. I just started AAS 1 with him this week and so far so good. It's going to really cement things for him and also cover some sounds that HOP didn't cover. My oldest son who just turned 8 did HOP k-1 and we stopped grade 2 after the green workbook because I felt like he started guessing to much and it seemed like we were hitting a wall. I purchased the OPG used and I started that with him last week from lesson 1 just to make sure he is solid with his reading and phonics and to also build his confidence! So far it's going well for him. He likes the extra activities and the end of the lessons. Once he is done with OPG than I'll start him in AAS. All that to say if your son is reading well already like my youngest son I'll go ahead with AAS1 and if he likes workbooks maybe even add ETC.
  17. My first grader just finished HOP 2 a few months ago. He reads very well but I did continue with Master Reader he really likes the computer work and the explode the code workbooks. I'm also waiting for my All About Spelling to arrive so we can start that as well. Have fun!
  18. If you own this cd how does you child like it? I really do wish they had a sample on the website! I'm thinking about ordering it for my 8yr old son. He's having some struggles with reading and I have decided to give the OPGTR a try.
  19. I could really use your input on Phonics. Thanks
