  1. This morning has been rough going! After talking to everyone on the board I think my 8yr old may have Sensory issues or something else going on. It started off with him trying to mico-manage his older 9.5 yr old brother. I'm constantly reminding him that he's not the parent. Telling his brother that he can't have a second bowl of cereal and so forth. We are studying the Human body therefore I let them watch the Magic School Bus dvd. I went into the bathroom to clean my bathtub and before you know it he attacked his older brother and hit him in the face! He thought older brother skipped the dvd along to another chapter. Well he became very emotional and upset! It's just not fair to his brother. I sent him to his room to calm down. Once he calmed down I talked to him And let him know hitting is not acceptable. If he had a problem he should have cone to get me. After a while of being calm he came out and apologized to brother and myself. Now he's acting as if nothing happened! He is gifted academically and also on the piano. He definitely need structure and so far our modified work box system is working. I'm really thinking about sending him to school? He does not act this way around others. If I was to mention any of this to friends etc they would be shocked! I'm not concerned with his academics but it's his other actions that concern me. Maybe he will benefit from school I don't know? I hope I'm not making him out to be a bad kid because honestly he's not. He has so many wonderful qualities! He has a great sense of humor. It just seems like when these incidents occur it out weights the good. We see his PED next week but next week can't get here quick enough! Any words of wisdom? Thanks for listening
  2. Great resource! I will definitely print this out for my boys. Thanks
  3. I like your schedule! We plan to cover Grammarland as well once we are done. I think I'll let my boys use the diagramming lessons in FLL3 since I already own the book. Thanks
  4. If you used this with your child can you explain how it was used and how you scheduled it?
  5. I just put Out of Sync Child on hold at my library. Thanks My next question is what's next? How do I present this info to his new pediatrician? We just relocated and next week will be our first time meeting her for his wellness check up.
  6. I assume NP stands for neuro-Physc test? No he hasn't. My 9 yr old did IM with the OT in the office. We had homework but it was activities similar to brain gym and sequencing. The OT recommended the Wii Fit Plus for him as well as the dancing games like dance revolution or even the dance game that comes with the mat and you have to get the move and beat at the same time. A few things I noticed about my son while doing IM. I didn't have to repeat my self as much like did you brush your teeth, make your bed, etc. He has dyslexia and dysgraphia and instead of me telling him that his b's and d's were backwards he now self corrects without me. Little changes like that. Some of his changes could have come from just growth age wise but I do believe that some of it was from IM. His scores started off very weak but after just a few sessions he really began to improve. By the way it was very costly. We were only responsible for our deductible but after that the insurance paid 80%. Still quite costly.
  7. Thanks for the suggestion. Will definitely try out the ear plugs. My oldest son just finished a year of OT including IM for dyslexia/ dysgraphia and Sequencing. It really made a difference. I didn't realize IM could be helpful with SPD? Now off to find another good OT. I really wish I had put things together a year or so ago. The OT we used for my oldest was phenomenal. We recently relocated therefore using her is out if the equation.
  8. I'm hoping that someone can help me out or atleast point me in the right direction. My 8 yr old son is a very bright boy. He excels academically but something is gong on with him I just can't figure it out! I can honestly say everyday we are having issues with him. He's easily upset, some form of whining, complaining about every little thing his older brother does, like singing, any noise, or humming, it really sends him over the edge if he doesn't stop. He complains about long rides in the car even if it's to a fun place he really want to go. He says the car ride really makes him sick. And although the ac is on he has to open his window for some relief. I noticed he took his new pillow case of his pillow because it was to itchy and rough. He fastens his swim trucks tight, ties his shoes tight, and complains about some of the tags in his shirts or pants. The biggest issue we are dealing with now is not wanting to go out to eat at a resturant. We really don't go out much but we enjoy eating out maybe twice a month. He really has gotten bent out of shape over this! I talked to him today to try and get to the bottom of it and he said he likes to eat at home and doesn't like all the noice and clattering sounds and commotion in the resturant. He asked if we could get the food to go? Sorry for being long winded. He has his 8yr old check-up with his PED next week and I would like to mention some of these things to her. Does anyone else see this type of behavior in their children? If so what could be the cause of it? Thanks for your help
  9. I just found a code for 15% off. Use H4F4T4D and your total should be $48.39. Not bad!
  10. The rates for Barton tutors in our area is $40-45 for 45min. You have to commit twice a week minimum. Just trying to make the decision if I want to tutor my son with Barton or Dancing Bears or use a private Barton tutor again. He had a tutor last year and we saw good improvements with his reading and his confidence soared. We just relocated to another state and I really need to make a decision within the next free weeks!
  11. Trying to get a ball park on how much O-G tutors charge per hr. Thanks
  12. Taking a tour on Friday. Talked with the education specialist for over 39min or more today. The kids are all placed in the classrooms according to age and grade. Therefore my son will be placed in the 4th grade classroom. Each child's curriculum is individualized. If a child is in 4th grade but reading on a 2nd grade level the teacher work with the child where they are and so forth. Here's some info from the website: ****** DePaul serves the community of bright students who learn differently. Most of the students at DePaul have above average intelligence. Most also have dyslexia or ADD. The academic success of our students makes the label "disabled" misleading. Our students learn differently than other students and must be taught in non-traditional programs. DePaul uses multi-sensory learning programs to enhance their learning experience. DePaul teaches the way our students learn. The full-time program serves students with learning differences of elementary and middle school age. Students are taught to mastery in small classes and are grouped by ability rather than grade to maximize effectiveness. Our specialized techniques include multisensory teaching methods along with structured, individualized direct instruction. The emphasis is on basic academic remediation. Enrichment opportunities are offered in art, drama, music, computers and physical education. An intermediate program is offered for our older students to help prepare them for transitioning to high school. Organizational and study skills are an integral part of the middle school program and these students have the same enrichment opportunities as the younger ones. ****** Specialized programs include DePaul Structured Linguistics, special proven phonics programs, Open Court Reading and Direct Instruction SRA, and Saxon Math. The minimum requirement for a full-time teacher at DePaul is a 4 year degree, teaching certification, and experience teaching children. All teachers are professionally trained in the specialized phonics programs. They are also required to obtain their Certificate in Teaching Children with Dyslexia within the first year of employment at DePaul. In addition, all teachers are trained in first aid and CPR.
  13. I plan to call the school today. It's a private school and it's only 15 min frpursue home. The website states it's around $8,000 a year. That doesn't include some of the other fees. They also have financial aid. What type of questions should I ask? And what should I look for if we decided to take a tour?
  14. To make a long story short, my 9.5 yr old son (who has always been homeschooled) was diagnosed with Dyslexia approximately a year ago. Up until 3 months ago he received private tutoring for a year from a O-G certified tutor. We had to stop the tutoring because we relocated to a different state. His discharge report states that he has made some improvements and currently reading at a mid second grade level easy and beginning 3rd grade level is more difficult. His spelling and writing is still below grade level. I can honestly say he has gained more confidence in himself sense he's had the tutoring. :) His former tutor recommendation was for me to continue Recipe for reading and All About Spelling with him. After finding out about the school I'm now rethinking homeschooling and possibly sending him to the special school. The school is only about 13-15 min from our home. I'm just really trying to think it through before talking to my husband about it. Either way he would support me. Here are a list of pros and cons I've come up with. Please chime in if you have any or if you have any advice. Pros -programs is 1st-8th grade -Certified teachers who are trained in certain curriculum that works well with dyslexic kids. - May be able to get on grade level with reading, spelling, and writing. -Can see there are other kids who also deal with dyslexia -Small class room ratio 8:1 -may learn structure and study skills Cons -will miss the flexibility of homeschooling -homework from school -will miss the great field trips -Will miss younger brother(they are 16 months apart) -will miss eating most meals at home -will miss being able to listen to audio books for a few hours while building with Legos
